Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Blofeld's current entry:

  • Spectre: Ernst Stavro Blofeld, born Franz Oberhauser, was once a sociopathic boy who murdered his own father for loving a young, orphaned James Bond the Oberhauser family took in. Faking his own death and adopting his new name, Oberhauser built up the criminal organization SPECTRE, which finances and facilitates terrorism around the globe, allies with interested parties to topple governments, prolong civil wars, horde natural resources, and eventually involves itself in the sex trade where hundreds of thousands of women and children are trafficked to feed SPECTRE's accounts. Oberhauser gleefully reveals himself as the architect of James's pain, having arranged various events to result in the deaths of Bond's friends, and loved ones. He was also the one behind Raoul Silva, having wanted M herself to die to hurt Bond. With Bond himself, Oberhauser has small needles drilled into his head to torture him and even threatens to steal his ability to recognize faces by drilling in the right place. When this fails, Oberhauser holds Bond's Love Interest in a rigged chamber—also forcing her to watch the footage of her father committing suicide—so Bond must either try to save her and die in an explosion, or abandon her to save himself and live with the shame of it. Obsessed with destroying his stepbrother and devoted only to his own massive megalomania and eagerness to condemn the world to chaos or tyranny if it suits his purposes, Oberhauser is the ultimate villain of the rebooted chronology to date.

I'm thinking something like:

Under 200 words, thus allowing room for new deeds.

I'm gonna start putting my foot down on anything that changes my entries from hereon without reason.

Just a suggestion. But for the record, "Oberhauser gleefully reveals himself as the architect of James's pain, having arranged various events to result in the deaths of Bond's friends, and loved ones. He was also the one behind Raoul Silva, having wanted M herself to die to hurt Bond." becomes "the Greater-Scope Villain of this entire continuity and James Bond's foster brother, arranged various events to result in the deaths of Bond's friends and loved ones, including M herself."

And the last sentence is removed, though I'd not be too adverse to adding it back.

And FWIW, the current entry is nearly 250 words. I don't have TOO much of a problem since it's you know, Blofeld, but if we add to his entry...

EDIT: Oh, and the pending stuff:

@MIGTB None of what he does in No Time to Die is in there—unless his actions there are small potatoes. Also, I liked the original ending line, but I understand if we don't keep it though.

I don't mind cutting the Silvia stuff at least from the entry. It's never really explained how he helped him and tbh that was more Silvia's stuff.

Honestly, I'd be fine with keeping the ending line or part of it (though if we DO, "stepbrother" should be changed to "foster brother").

Question on Power Rangers. Can we change Venjix write up to have this to be before it:

I don't know if it's necessary, but we do that to every other villain who appears in two works on the page, such as Vrak.

Ok! So remember that ban evader who came through and proposed fun meme-creating character? I'm gonna give said character a proper discussion...and also cover all of his crimes, because the evader didn't even do that properly :D

What's the work?

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is one of the many...many games in the Command & Conquer RTS video game franchise, which often uses real actors to interact with the unseen, wish-fulfillment player character. Awesome actors, cheesy performances and fanservice outfits reside galore in this series, and it's wicked awesome!

So, this specific game...World War III is going on, torn between the Allied forces of America, the Empire of the Rising Sun comprising the Asian combined forces, and the Soviet Union itself in Russia. The player character has an option to play through a campaign of either side in the war, and gets a unique set of circumstances depending.

Who is Anatoly Cherdenko? What has he done?

Played by the man himself Tim Curry with glorious ham, Anatoly Cherdenko was a mere Colonel in the Soviet Union as the force was reaching its twilight, about to lose its current war against America....and so Cherdenko heads up a secret project overseeing Dr. Gregor Zelinsky in creating a time machine. And so, bringing along his superior General Nikolai Krukov, Cherdenko uses the time machine to go back in time and kill Albert Einstein, rewriting history to one where the USSR reigns supreme and Cherdenko himself is Premier and ruler.

Unfortunately for Cherdenko, not only are the forces of the Allies still warring against the Soviets, but the growing Empire of the Rising Sun is also threatening both sides. And so we get our game, a massive, destructive World War III all at Cherdenko's behest...in the Empire's campaign, Cherdenko has minimal presence and dies unceremoniously, but the other campaigns?

In the Soviet campaign, Cherdenko takes the player character, a new Soviet commander, under his wing, and works with him to repel Allied and Empire forces from various Soviet holdouts, all while undermining Krukov's rule. Soon, an assassination attempt is made on Cherdenko, and he reveals to the player that it was Krukov, dictating the player to kill Krukov for treachery.

Of course, as it comes out, Krukov wasn't a traitor. Cherdenko, knowing only Krukov and Zelinsky knew the truth about the altered history, eliminated Zelinsky and framed Krukov to get rid of him, too. Cherdenko then sends the player to assassinate the Empire's ruler, Yoshiro, and gets plenty of Empire soldiers killed before Yoshiro is put down.

Cherdenko then fakes agreeing to a peace treaty signing with the Allies, just to lure a massive swathe of their forces into a trap and wipe them all out...this accomplished, Cherdenko cheerfully informs the player You Have Outlived Your Usefulness and tries to kill him and all soldiers under his command with a superweapon, uncaring of anyone caught up in the destruction. Luckily, the player fights back and takes down Cherdenko, the madman raving that this is "his" timeline as he goes down.

Meanwhile, in the Allied campaign, Cherdenko is trying to expand Soviet rule by attacking defenseless cities and taking powerful officials hostage while decimating the rest. However, Cherdenko soon forms a team-up with the Allies to face the Empire of the Rising Sun together...but conspicuously fails to back up the Allies when it is most needed, putting massive chunks of their forces into heavy danger.

Once the Empire is taken down, Cherdenko reveals his ultimate betrayal: he has used the war on the Empire to cover up the fact that he has been developing an armada of airship bombers in Cuba, with which Cherdenko intends to drop bombs on and utterly wipe out countless major Allied cities across the globe until the world cows to him.

When this plan is bested by the Allies top commander (you!), Cherdenko is apparently cornered in his headquarters...only to smugly reveal his diabolical escape plan:

"Commander! You've rained on my glorious parade! For this, I'm sending everything I've got at you. But I won't let you have the satisfaction of catching me! I'm escaping to the one place that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism!...........SPACE!"

Preparing his personal rocket ship to ditch his allies and flee into the outer reaches of the cosmos, Cherdenko is unfortunately beaten before he can flee and is frozen to be put into cryo-sleep, his threat ended....for now!

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

Not a one to discuss, he's a purely power hungry dictator out to sate his ego and, failing at that, avoid the grasping claw of capitalism from claiming him [lol] Every single one of his allies gets betrayed by him in one way or another in one or the other of the campaigns, and he's a delightfully hammy bastard the whole way through.

Heinousness?

Right so uhhh the original effortpost went over his actions...in the Soviet campaign, in which he screws over his allies plenty but earnestly his worst action is rewriting history to a war-torn dictatoship which happens through all of the timelines. Like, he probably does enough there, but the Allied campaign that was conveniently glossed over as "he doesn't do much there"? Cherdenko betrays the Allies to be destroyed by the Empire and tries to bomb the shit out of a lot of Allied cities and kill millions of people to reassert his dominance over the world. He passes heinousness even for the franchise easily.

Final Verdict?

Yes to Russian Tim Curry!

They only briefly mention that Silva was in SPECTRE and Blofeld later comments on M's death by callously saying: "Gone forever". So yeah, there's no need to really address that in too much detail if at all.

With Blofeld, I'd call him an Overarching Villain since I think he's a tad too involved to be a GSV. Maybe for Casino Royale, and even then that's one film. Also, I think we should call him only use his "official" name and mention he was born Oberhauser once, since he is predominantly meant to be Blofeld and they gave him the different name for the sake of the twist.

Yes to Russian Curry and KC!Luthor.

[tup] Cherdenko, again. Also:

  • Pitfall: The Lost Expedition: Pusca, In the past, was the High Priest of El Dorado who was banished for betraying the country to the French. Pusca spent 500 years absorbing the energy of travellers to stay young while waiting for the prophesized outsider to collect the artifacts the Artefacts placed in the temples. When an adventurer named Kevin McCallister showed up, Pusca thought he was the prophesized one. However, when Pusca found out he wasn't, he drained the energy from him. In the present, Pusca teams up with St. Claire, who he again thinks is the one from the prophecy. When St. Claire gets the artifacts from Harry, Pusca demands to have them, and when St. Claire refuses, Pusca kills him. Pusca had been lying to Kevin's daughter Nicole about wanting to help bring back her father, which he uses to steal the artifacts back from Harry. Pusca then kills Nicole when she is no longer of use to him and begins his final plan to make sure the French destroy El Dorado.

Based on the EP, [tup] to Cherdenko. Man, Tim Curry and Mark Hamill are CM-generating machines. Haha.

So in addition to Christoph Waltz keeping his one CM (and Sam Mendes keeping his), Cary Fukunaga gets another after The Commandant.

I'll also agree with Polar on referring to the name Franz Oberhauser once and then calling him Blofeld the rest of the time too.

I agree on the Overarching Villain use instead too. Also, should we maybe put his entry first? If not, I'm good with that.

@ACW: I firmly believe the original proposer likely didn't even watch the other two campaigns and just based their proposal on the Soviet campaign to save their time, because Cherdenko's actions in the Allied campaign are legit his most heinous on a wide scale lmao

@mir: Nah,I was only really interested in Cherdenko, any other Red Alert candidates are free for picking.

I'm not quite sure about this guy meeting the standards, but I think he's at least worth a shot.

What's the Work

Breaking Bad is a TV show revolving around a high school teacher having lung cancer and deciding to become a drug dealer to provide money for his money. Better Call Saul is a prequel revolving around a con man and ex-cop becoming an Amoral Attorney and The Dragon respectively.

Who is Juan Bolsa and what has he done?

Juan Bolsa is a supporting antagonist in both shows.

Bolsa is one of the dons of The Cartel alongside Hector Salamanca and Eladio Vuente. Somewhere in the 80's, the three dons have a meeting with Gustavo Fring and Max Arciniega. While the two want to start working with the Cartel, Eladio felt disrespected by the fact Gus and Max sold meth to his men to arrange the meeting. Eladio has Hector murder Max and then have Bolsa pin down Gus against the ground and have him stare at his friend's dead eyes. Gus would then start working for the Cartel anyway with Bolsa as his boss, while secretly planning his revenge.

Bolsa serves as the Mouth of Eladio the majority of the time. During Season 5 of BCS, Bolsa sends out an ambush on the titular Saul Goodman to steal his money and protect his business; The ambush fails spectacularly thanks to Mike Ehrmantraut killing them all.

Bolsa then sits on his ass and does nothing until Season 3 of BrBa, where he confronts Tortuga, who serves as The Rat for the DEA. He gives him a turtle as a "gift", before the Cousins arrive and say "Off with His Head!", and do exactly that. Bolsa puts his head on the turtle alongside a bomb or two, which was used to kill a DEA agent and injure at least four others, and also give Hank Schrader PTSD. Oh yeah, Hank. The Cousins are kind of pissed at him for killing their cousin Tuco, but Bolsa says "no DEA killing on my property", so they go for his brother-in-law Walter White instead, something that Bolsa allows to happen. But then Gus says "no no, north of the border is my property, so do what you want", so the Cousins go for Hank. Except Gus is The Chessmaster, so he warned Hank beforehand; He manages to kill Marco, and Mike later finishes off Leonel in the hospital.

Bolsa realised Gus is behind this and calls him through his phone; He tells him that the second the federales will get off his back, he will "pay a visit" to him. But then one of the federales guns him down, so that plan isn't happening anytime soon; Or ever, for that matter.

Freudian Excuse / Mitigating Factors

None to speak of. He is angry at Lalo for burning down a building with a man inside, but that is pure Pragmatic Villainy; It did bring a lot of attention after all, and Bolsa is all about the money and business; Nothing Personal. His BCS character folder also says this:

  • Pet the Dog: Despite grumbling that Hector has always been nothing but trouble, Bolsa ensures that Hector's territory remains his even after he and Tuco are put out of commission, rather than seizing it for himself.

I don't really see anything even remotely "pet the dog"-like in this scene. Bolsa is all about the business, so that is probably a form of Pragmatic Villainy; Especially since we know Lalo will show up to replace Hector soon.

Heinous Standard

Now, he apparently doesn't do that much for a big cartel don, but think of this; Bolsa has ten episodes; Three for BrBa, the rest of them for BCS. And most of the time, he doesn't even do anything evil but boss people around. He has extremely small screen-time, and thus not much to work with. However, I say that one particular action is worth a mention: Tortuga. Upon finding out he's The Rat, he has the Cousins chop his head off, then place his head on a turtle, then have the turtle blow up and take a few DEA agents along with it. It's one of the most brutal moments in the series and is literally the page image for NightmareFuel.Breaking Bad. It has only one confirmed victim, but also more than a few confirmed mutilations; One guy is missing his leg, for God's sake. It also brings Hank some serious PTSD, as if killing Tuco wasn't enough. For a guy that has three episodes in all of BrBa, this is also the only one where he does anything, and boy does he make it count. It's also worth to point out he forced Gus to look into his dead partner's eyes. Damn.

As for other Cartel members? They have either more importance or resources. Don Eladio is the Greater-Scope Villain, Hector has two seasons of BCS, the Cousins have the entire first half of Season 3, Gus has the entire franchise. It's not fair to compare him to those guys.

Final Verdict

Abstaining, but leaning towards a slight [tup], although only for what he did to Tortuga.
