Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Sorry for taking so long, this week has been crazy:

  • FBI: Most Wanted: Vanished: Samuel Smith, despite appearing a charismatic unassuming man, is secretly a selfish paedophile and a dangerous sexual predator. At only fourteen Samuel abducted and raped a eight-year-old boy, before drowning him in a lake. As a grown man he kidnapped eleven-year-old David Caine, isolating him in the middle of nowhere to use for his perversions. Over the next nine years Samuel regularly raped and brutalised David, even baiting him to try to escape just to further crush his hope, leaving David so psychologically broken he forgot his identity and name. Following David hitting adulthood Samuel began targeting another child, Caleb Vaughter. Seducing his mother Caroline Vaughter to get close to him, Samuel stabbed Caroline and her elderly mother to death; imprisoning Caleb in a makeshift bunker Samuel planned to wait until the heat died down then break him as he did with David. Cornered by the FBI, not willing to face prison Samuel committed suicide leaving Caleb to suffocate to death, his last words taunting the agents that they would never find him.

Edit: [tup] to Rafael Dupont. Sounds an interesting film.

I didn't see it, but there's a female villain in Stalked and Pregnant or something.

Lifetime is actually capable of putting out somewhat respectable films. Mom at Sixteen and The Party Never Stops come to mind.

I've got another suggestion, and I think this one would be considered special by the story's standard, unlike Andrew.

  • What is the Work
    • Your Turn to Die is a visual novel game that centers around a death game not unlike Danganronpa. 12 participants (well, 20 but 8 of them died before they could be introduced) are placed in a game where they have to participate in specific activities that end with at least one of them dying. Once a portion of the game is cleared, the surviving participants move on to the next floor of the building. Each floor has a different "floor-master", a member of the organization running the game who acts as the host to keep the participants in line. Some important things clarify before getting into the character in question is that the organization (called ASU-NARO) also work in creating entirely accurate robotic copies of people with A.I.s that perfectly replicate the personalities of the participants. It should be noted that these A.I.s are treated just as human as the other participants. So they at least feel that they are real people.
    • YTTD is a chapter based game that isn't entirely complete yet but since my candidate is now dead it shouldn't be much of an issue. In chapter 3 the remaining 6 participants arrive on the fourth floor where they are told by the floor master that they will be partnered up with robotic copies (called "Dummies") of 6 of the 8 participants that died in the first stage of the game. Their goal is to kill the floor master, who just so happens to be my suggestion.

  • Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
    • My candidate's name is Sou Hiyori a.k.a. Midori. Not to be confused with one of the participants going by that name as an alias, Shin Tsukimi. To make things less confusing I will simply just refer to him as Midori. Midori is a member of ASU-NARO who tricked most of the candidates into signing the consent forms for the Death Game (which said they will devote themselves to Asunaro for granting their wish). This involved him disguising himself to get closer to the candidate and using their weaknesses to get them to sign the form. For example he disguised himself as a nurse to get close to Q-taro (a baseball player) after he suffered a possible career-ending injury and had him sign in order to grant his wish of fixing his injury. He's able to get away with these disguises due to being presumed deceased, after musician Alice Yabusame found out he was trying to do something shady to him and his sister Reko, and accidentally pushed him off a building where his head was impaled on a spiked fence. He lived however because he's already replaced most of his body with robotic parts, including his head. What really makes him stand out as fucked up is what we learn about him from an A.I. of Shin. Ever since Midori was a child, he was fascinated by humans and would study how to break them, physically and/or mentally.
Shin AI: What makes them hurt...? What makes them suffer...? What pains them physically...? What pains them mentally...? What do they learn...? What do they remember...? What do they forget...? He'd play with humans he got involved with... until he'd exhausted them, it seems...
    • One example of how he broke someone is what he did to former detective Keiji Shinogi. When Keiji was a kid he knew a police officer who he considered his hero, and grew up to join the police force to see him again. One day on duty, Keiji was in a car chase with a suspect and the officer on the radio told him the suspect was armed and was about to shoot, causing him to panic and shoot the suspect by accident. As it turned out, the suspect was unarmed, and what's more, he was the policeman man Keiji knew as a kid. This incident traumatized Keiji causing him to become to broken mess he is throughout the game. Surprise surprise, the officer on the radio was actually Midori, and he was apparently the one who set up Keiji's idol to be shot by him (how he did this is never elaborated though). During the game he taunts Keiji by throwing the gun he used to shoot his hero at his feet and revealing all of this to him with a smile on his face.
    • Personality-wise he simply just loves to taunt the characters with an innocent smile on his face. This act is only drops whenever he truly believes he is in danger of dying. As I mentioned earlier, the game treats the robotic characters with as much humanity as the human character, this helps emphasize Midori's cruelty as well. When the Dummies were first created, he showed them videos of their human counterparts' deaths and told them if they didn't want to die again, then they need to make their partners into corpses instead. He also took one of the robots on the fourth floor, Maple (who he had programmed to love him), and reconstructed her into an Eldritch Abomination with four screens where her head was and a chainsaw for a hand.

  • Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
    • Hahahahaha, NO. He is purely sadistic with no reason given for him to be this way. While he was friends with Shin prior to his "death", it's presented in a very toxic manner. He had apparently liked to do things to scare him and enjoyed seeing his reaction, and would put up pictures of Shin to make him feel uncomfortable. Upon his AI self's recollection of this, Shin is shown to look almost ill.

  • Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
    • All of the floor masters are cruel to the participants. The first one, Sue Miley gave Sara (the main character) a switch that she told her would slow down and eventually stop her best friend's execution only for him to still die. Afterwards she rubbed it in Sara's face that she only prolonged his suffering.
    • Gashu Satou, the floor master for the third floor, forcibly stuck one of the participants with the Sacrifice Card (which ensured that it's wielder would be executed if they did not receive the most votes in a vote to determine who to kill) and then killed himself to ensure the participant's death. Sara even outright refers to him as a demon for doing so.
    • But Midori still stands out in my opinion, because as far as we know, he's the only one who's cruelty has extended outside the game as well, as he's tortured people for who knows how long.

  • Final Verdict?
    • Yes I'd say he's a keep.
