During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So, I just noticed Peter Kirlian from Are You Afraid of the Dark? is a CM. While he mostly counts IMO, he has a pretty big Alas, Poor Villain moment at the end, as described in the recap. Is this disqualifying?
So I'm late to the party on the recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre entries, but I would like to discuss one of the Draytons.
In the proposals for both versions, his "I don’t take pleasure in killing" standard was written off as hypocrisy, but this overlooks something. Drayton, in the first film at least, is depicted as having a split personality (and Tobe Hooper confirmed this). He alternates between being amused and being disturbed by the family frenzy. One moment, he's laughing, then suddenly he flips and is uncomfortable with it. Eventually, he gets up and says "No need to torture the poor girl!" (which the script
describes him as doing "angrily") and when they don't listen, he says they should just get it over with.
He also frequently tries to comfort Sally. After bickering with his family, when he sees Sally struggling, he softens and says to "take it easy". During the dinner scene, when the hitchhiker is mercilessly taunting Sally, Drayton tells her to "Pay him no mind". And he keeps telling her "Don't cry, this won't hurt a bit" and "You won't feel a thing".
Now, this shouldn't be an issue in the 2nd film's timeline, since in part 2 he's gotten much more malevolent and no longer seems to have the reservations he had in the first film (and we have had characters become CMs in later installments). But in the 3rd film's timeline, he only appears in the first film, meaning his standards never vanished.
So I would say keep the 2ndFilm!Drayton, cut the 3rdFilm!Drayton/W.E.
There's nothing in the film proper to suggest it's anything but squeamishness on his part to not enjoy killing. Moreover, the "split personality" thing isn't there, either. He's still the same person all through. He just enjoys tormenting her with the others.
That's not a split personality, that's being a mood swinger. Especially because when Sally keeps screaming, Drayton loses all patience, telling her to "shut up, you bitch hog" and is then enjoying it just as much.
Yeah, not really inclined at all to think Drayton/W.E. has genuine illness or standards against what's happening, he's still a cheerful part of the family business who outright says earlier in the film he doesn't like witnessing violence, so him being a bit squeamish over killing their victim quicker doesn't scream "standard" any more than the You're Next mastermind.
No! That is NOT Solid Snake! Stop impersonating him!
No, the Hitchhiker says "He's nothing, he's just a cook!", then it cuts to Drayton standing up, and saying "Shut up you bitch hog!". I have the film open on Tubi right now.

It's more than just not wanting to be involved. He flat out yells to the Hitchhiker "No need to torture the poor girl!". Then when the Hitchhiker keeps screwing with her, Drayton yells "Did you hear me?!" to which the Hitchhiker says "I heard you but it don't mean much!"

Drayton/W.E. is party to the rampant butchering of tons of people to turn into meat and gleefully laughs 99% of the entire ordeal while Sally screams her head off and is just as happily playing along in other sequences, I'm not buying him screaming abuse at his annoyingly sadistic partner to knock off his screwing with their soon-to-be victim as genuine standards when he finds it hilarious before and after his "don't torture her!" At best it's a momentary annoyance at her screaming and the fuckery, at worst he's just playing further games.
No! That is NOT Solid Snake! Stop impersonating him!So I have a brand new fanfic one and this one is weird.
What is the Work
Wings Of The Fallen
is a Tintin fanfiction written by TintinRossi56, where (you won't believe this) Rastapopoulos is revealed to be a demon who wants to bring about the apocalypse, and also Tintin is a fallen angel.
Who is Rastapopulus (the name is misspelled in the fic) and What Has He Done?
Rastapopulus as I already said is revealed to be a demon who wants to bring back Lucifer to bring about the apocalypse. In his first scene, he badly injures Uriel with the intention of killing him. Rastapopulus had been planning this for a while and teams up with the archangel Arazeal to this end and finds the perfect location to perform the ritual he needs to summon Lucifer.
While he is performing the ritual Tintin and the Captain show up to stop him. Rastapopulus fights with the captain and gets the upper hand nearly killing him but Tintin sacrifices himself to stop Rastapopulus and is killed as a result. Rastapopulus is able to complete the ritual but funnily Lucifer doesn't want to bring about the apocalypse yet and just leaves dragging Rastapopulus down to hell with him.
Does he have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
I mean this is Rastapopulus we are talking about so do you really expect him to have any. When it comes to seriousness he is played seriously here, more seriously than how he could sometimes be played in the original comics. The fic is pretty short but it is not super short and does have more than just Rastapopulus doing evil acts it is also over 6000 words. He is also an Omnicidal Maniac here so him being too similar to his canon counterpart is not an issue.
Does he meet the Heinousness Standard?
Well, he is an Omnicidal Maniac who wants to bring about the apocalypse completely on his own and it is his explicit intention to do so and it will mean the end of the world and many deaths as Lucifer says no one will be spared once he does come, he also nearly kills two people and kills one (though he was revived) so yeah I would say this isn't an issue.
Final Verdict?
Yep again.
