Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up][up]Yeah, we determined he viewed his family more as his cult and following rather than actual loved ones.

Makes sense I suppose since Roman concocted the scheme to begin with. Also, no way we're cutting Rose. She's an extremely intricate and very important part of the plot and is too utterly reprehensible to be overlooked.

Oh yeah, Rose is absolutely keeping.

And I guess I'm fine giving a late [tup] to Roman.

[up][up] Honestly, if you do it in the Drafts, I'm more than happy to take care of the grammar and stuff.

Besides that, the only writeups left are beneficii (I just sent a PM), and Lighty & Ravok's stuff.

Here.

It's finally been checked.

  • Marquess Horen Pauls is one of the nastiest of Medea Solon's enemies. During a war, Horen is a leading figure in running a human trafficking where war orphans are sold into horrific conditions such as becoming child soldiers, drug mules or sex slaves. A psychopath, Horen also uses the orphans to indulge his sadistic fantasies by torturing and murdering them for fun. After suspecting that Medea has sent her workers to him as "spies", he orders them to be abused before trying to kill them all. Even at trial for his crimes, Horen is so narcissistic that he goes so far as to blame the families of his victims.

Edit: something is up with the drafts. I can't add it as it's checked out.

Edit 2: now it's up. Weird I thought the get out tree was already added and submitted.

BTW, looking at the Arkham tree on the DC video games page, Calendar Man needs to be moved to directly under Joker and above Firefly. If it’s “chronological order by first appearance”, then that’s where he goes - he helps Joker kill Commissioner Loeb at the very beginning of Origins

@ACW I did see it in the YMMV and figured it was already added, but wasn't sure. Sorry about that.

If I counted correctly, and including the slightly tweaked Quan Chi and re-potholed Rose, I believe between 50 and 55.

BTW, any good potholes for Horen's name? Would Hurt a Child?

Here's my merged entry for the Patient Zero bad guys.

  • Hitman (2016)'s "Patient Zero": Oybek Nabazov and his second-in-command Sister Yulduz are the leaders of Liberation, who attempted to cause a pandemic by having brainwashed cult members inject themselves with a lethal virus and spread it around the globe. While Obyek is a fanatical "serial cultist" who has spent the last three decades founding cults and leading them down a self-destructive path that resulted in several mass suicides, Yulduz has secretly invested large amounts of money into security and pharmacy companies to profit from the ensuring chaos and plans to leave Obyek and rest of the cult to their fates once they have set their plan in motion.

And for comparison the original entries below. Feel free to point out anything important I may have missed.

  • Oybek Nabazov, the leader of Liberation, is a man deeply obsessed with death, suicide and rebirth. Over the last three decades he has founded several cults, led them down a self-destructive path that resulted in seven mass suicides, leaving the remains behind to start anew. When the former virologist Owen Cage helped the cult create a deadly virus, Nabazov intended to have some of his most fanatical followers inject themselves with the virus to cause several outbreaks around the globe in a coordinated attack. When Agent 47 arrives in Bangkok to assassinate him, he has begun brainwashing a new group of unaware cult recruits with the intention of having them spread the virus to Bangkok and beyond.
  • Sister Yulduz, the "chosen sister", is the second-in-command of the Liberation cult. Pretending to be a devout follower of Nabazov she helped organizing the cult attacks, while secretly having invested large amounts of money into security and pharmacy companies to profit from the chaos caused by the virus outbreaks. Showing no loyalty towards Nabazov or the cult, she already made plans to escape and leave them to their fates as soon as they begin their attacks.

Actually, Serial Killer may work better around "murdering them".

Rewrite looks good, but wouldn't Suicide Attack work better than Plaguemaster? Also, since there's an extra pothole, let's use Only in It for the Money for Yulduz's name.

Got another for today in between dealing with computer issues and thanks to Ravok for his aid:

What's the Work?

Inquisitor is a film by Paul Naschy, Spanish horror film and the first he directed. Basically a Spanish Witchfinder General where Naschy plays an Inquisitor who forms a lust for a woman and everything that ensues as the fallout...

Obviously, we're talking Inquisitor Bernard de Fossey

Who is bernard de Fossey?

A holier than thou hypocrite and cruel minister, Bernard de Fossey is a fanatic who scours his land of Spain for "witches." Really innocent women caught up in the craze of witch-finding and also to push away his own lustful nature. Bernard has subjected hundreds of innocent women to vile tortures before they are burned at the stake. Early enough in the film, we see the women rounded up and subjected to said tortures being put on the Rack to "the Wheel" to straight up mutilation, including genital mutilation. One of his victims is so badly tortured that she dies right there in his torture chamber and doesn't even make it to the stake, but most women are slowly burned alive by being hoisted above a fire with Bernard watching all the while with cold satisfaction.

This goes on whether victims plead or anything else and a confession only hastens execution. With a team of brutal torturers, Bernard seems to have everything in hand until coming to a new village where Bernard finds two women of a household, accuses them and also a young child to be tortured.

Through here, Bernard is captivated by a local woman named Catherine...who has a lover that Bernard arranges to be disposed of and tries to have her arents sign Catherine over to him....Catherine, however, learns of his deeds and is so furious...

That in a twist you don't usually see in these? Catherine actually does sign a pact with Satan to become a witch and plants evidence against Bernard while seducing him. Caught in bed with her, and Catherine having secured her own demise for witchcraft, Bernard is accused and his rivals are eager to have done with him. He attempts to repent, but is taken and burnt alive as well.

Mitigating issues?

Nope. He's a self righteous, lustful hypocrite torturing and killing countless innocent people for his own power and gratification. Just like his Protestant counterpart Matthew Hopkins, he's eager to flaunt or violate his own standards and is not presented in a remotely positive light here..

Even his attempted confession at the end is nothing more than a hypocritical fear of damnation and attempt to get out of it.

Conclusion?

Pass.
