Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Sure to Dubois

Alright, thinking it over, I think this guy is just unique enough to warrant a separate writeup, so away we go!

What is the work?

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is a re-imagining of the original Dead Rising 2 game. In it, we no longer play as Chuck Greene - we're back as Frank West, the OG photojournalist himself. While a majority of the game plays the same, there are some changes to the story, both major and minor; among other things, Stacey Forsythe and Raymond Sullivan switch narrative places, Brandon Whitaker is a key part of the story, and our old friend TK manages to be even worse than he already was.

Who is Tyrone "TK" King? What does he do?

TK is the host of Terror is Reality, a game show in which contestants slaughter zombies on television for his fun and profit. While he originally seems to just be a sleazy game show host, he is quickly revealed to be so much worse than that. After the game in the opening, Frank stumbles on him and Brandon discussing something in a warehouse - with full context, we know that TK is arranging for the zombie outbreak to happen. Throughout the conversation, he persuades Brandon that he's doing a good thing for the people here by manipulating his CURE ideals, then hands him the bomb and payment to start the outbreak. Right when Frank gets to the elevator, the bomb goes off and the outbreak begins.

Later on, Frank discovers Brandon again, learning that TK manipulated him into blowing up the cages by persuading him that everyone would be equal if everyone were a zombie, convincing him he's doing the right thing and leading him on a small rampage of his ow (in which he kidnaps people to turn them into zombies). Brandon is killed in the fight, but Frank discovers some mercs moving things underground and investigates, leading him to discover that TK is leading the mercs in some kind of operation on the train. While Frank makes it to the front of the train, TK shoots at him to distract him then decouples the car, disappearing for now.

When Frank gets back to the Safe House, the group hears an explosion and realizes that TK is taking advantage of the outbreak to rob the casinos, using his mercs to do so. However, Frank sabotages the operation, ensuring TK doesn't get the money. Enraged by the loss, TK has the Twins lure in and kidnap Rebecca, then tells Frank that the only way to get her back is to give him what he lost: $1,000,000 within 24 hours. Frank manages to get the money in time, but despite this, the Twins attack him anyway before giving Rebecca back, leading to their deaths. After this, TK tries to escape by helicopter, but Frank manages to stop him and capture him.

He's kept handcuffed in the Safe House for the rest of the main story, except for a brief time in which he escapes during the Breach and gets infected for his trouble. For the sake of canon, Frank gives him the Zombrex he needs, so TK naturally immediately insults him. Once the main story ends, however, TK somehow manages to escape and kidnaps the mortally wounded Rebecca once again (she's recovering from a gunshot to the stomach).

Making contact with Frank, TK reveals that now it's "OVERTIME, BABY!", and blackmails him into retrieving a bunch of items for him or else he'll kill Rebecca. Frank obliges and meets with him, only for him to double cross Frank again, this time by throwing him into a zombie pit with no weapons to make him fight for his life while TK watches. Rebecca manages to sneak over to a rope and send it over, allowing Frank to climb up, so TK knocks her out and then engages Frank. Throughout the fight, Frank has to keep saving Rebecca's life while TK tries to force him away and let her die, but eventually Frank comes out on top and flips TK over the railing, down to the ground and to his death.

Any mitigating factors?

For he himself, none whatsoever - he's just a greedy prick who kills millions of people in a zombie outbreak for a quick buck - though I suppose, for the record, that I should mention that him keeping Rebecca alive in Overtime is not because of standards, it's because he needs a hostage, just like how he'll give Katey Zombrex in the original game if she needs it. Figured that'd be obvious, but just want to be safe. However, there's the issue of if he's unique enough for a separate entry - and honestly, I think he is.

Basically, with the exception of the train battle and casino heist, all of his major actions are re-contextualized or outright changed for the new story, making them all stand out. Instead of letting the outbreak happen, he actively manipulates the bomber and provides the bomb to make it happen (which makes him more directly responsible for Brandon's Psychopath rampage as well). Instead of framing Chuck, he and Stacey scapegoat the entire CURE organization. Instead of just capturing Rebecca to lure Chuck in, he does so to get a one million dollar ransom, then tries to have Frank killed anyway when he brings it. Instead of capturing a family, TK captures Frank's love interest, who's recovering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. Instead of suspending Chuck over the zombie pit, TK actively throws Frank in it to fight for his life with no weapons or food.

Like I said, the only thing that doesn't change in some way is the train battle and the casino heist, which are his least heinous acts anyway - everything else gets changed somehow, especially his much more active role in the outbreak compared to the original. Overall, while his literal actions are fairly similar, I think the new context and additions to what he does are enough for a separate entry.

Is he heinous enough?

Easily - dude starts an outbreak that kills at least a few hundred thousand people just so he can make some money, and when he can't do anything else, he captures a wounded woman, blackmails Frank for her rescue, then backstabs him into a zombie pit. If the original version keeps (and he absolutely does) there's no reason why this version can't.

Final verdict?

I think he may be just different enough to warrant a separate entry - what about you?

Yes to TK.

@ ACW, Jim is a scumbag, but he occasionally has moments of regret or actually considering other people's feelings. He needles Sasha about her enjoying killing Alexander, but then Roland throws a bottle in his face and that seems to make him apologize to Sasha and that apology actually seems heartfelt. Jim does corrupt Sasha after her disillusionment with the Kingdom and convinces her to join his band of mercs rather than return to her family. We don't even extent of Jim's crimes by the end of the novel, it's just one flashback from Roland and then Roland tries to kill himself. Unless Jim is revealed to be a very good liar in a sequel novel, it's unlikely he counts.

Here's my Lamia writeup. Also expect a Billy Drago keeper next week.

  • Blade: The Daywalker: Overlord Lamia is the current queen of vampires and Dracula’s right hand who gleefully awaits his awakening, which will bring about a millennium of darkness amongst humanity. Allowing her vampires to do whatever they want to mankind, from excessive murder to human cattle ranches, Lamia uses a slumbering Blade for his blood to create more Daywalkers. Regularly eating babies and abusing her servants whenever the chance, once Lamia kidnaps Abby Caryle, she attempts to have her long lost vampire parents kill her after she refuses to join her.

I think there are more yes votes with Gibbs. I'll wait for a tally before re-adding him to the sandboxes though.

[tup] to TK

I like the second quote.

Before the Starcraft page is ready, I would like to propose an expansion to the entry of Samir Duran/Emil Narud. I was thinking about doing this for a long time now. Here is the original entry:

  • "Samir Duran"/"Emil Narud", Amon's follower, is a Xel'Naga who disguised himself as a Terran soldier, allowing the Zerg to overrun the Earth forces in several battles, killing many. When the officer Alexei Stukov realized what Duran had done, Duran framed Stukov as a traitor and had him murdered. Allying with the Zerg, Duran helped the Swarm overrun entire worlds, all while experimenting on captives to create the Protoss-Zerg hybrids Amon sought in order to help free his master from the Void. Devoted to Amon's nihilistic ambitions and seeing all other beings as pawns in his grand game, Duran achieved a level of damage in the galaxy few could match in order to free his master and bring about the end of all other species.

And here is the version with the changes I propose:

  • "Samir Duran"/"Emil Narud", Amon's follower, is a Xel'Naga who disguised himself as a Terran soldier, allowing the Zerg to overrun the Earth forces in several battles, killing many. When the officer Alexei Stukov realized what Duran had done, Duran framed Stukov as a traitor and had him murdered. Allying with Sarah Kerrigan and her Zerg, Duran assisted her in many of her schemes and gave her the idea to blow up the Nerazim capital's power grid which killed many Protoss. Duran helped the Zerg become the dominant power in the Koprulu Sector because it served his purposes, not caring about the billions that would perish as a result. Duran also conducted torturous, lethal experiments on countless beings to create the Protoss-Zerg hybrids to free Amon from the Void and end all life in the universe. One of his test subjects was the resurrected Alexei Stukov, whom he tortured for years. Devoted to Amon's nihilistic ambitions and seeing all other beings as pawns in his grand game, Duran achieved a level of damage in the galaxy few could match in order to free his master and bring about the end of all other species.

The reason why I wanted to make some changes is because I wanted to list the blowing of the power grid because Duran is the one who gives her the idea and carries out the plan. Also, that part that mentions that he helped the Zerg overrun entire planets is not correct because he mostly helps them against their fights with the UED and then helps Sarah Kerrigan massacre her allies and blow up the power grid of the capital of the Nerazim as a cover-up to kidnap their Matriarch. However, his goal is to help the Zerg become the dominant power in the Koprulu Sector because he later wants to collect Kerrigan's power and use it to resurrect his master, so he is still at fault for the people they have killed. Also, pointed out that the resurrected Stukov was one of his test subjects for years and that the main purpose of the Hybrids he creates is to end all life in the universe (and he knows it).

EDIT: I like the Cioccolata quote
