Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Aggregor's master plan involves trying to murder a literal baby onscreen, he endangered at least one populated planet from memory and his onscreen body count is through the roof. He stays.

I was holding back on the reboot baddies for a reason as I have no familiarity with it; I'm saying no to all three candidates.

If anything, I think it's MB that Aggregor should be cut from but I am not too familiar with Ben 10, and that's a discussion for the other thread.

Just to let everyone know, I recreated the sandbox page for Marvel Video Games because I needed to change a redirect for The Incredible Hulk (2008). Apparently the page got cut a while back, so I'm not sure if there's a procedure I have to follow to recreate it again.

Okay, here it is, my last Darkman candidate, Peter Rooker the villain from the third movie played by Jeff Fahey.

What's The Work?

Darkman III: Die Darkman Die is the second sequel and final film of the Darkman film series (at least, for now). Darkman returns to deal with businessman and crime boss Peter Rooker, who has made his empire in tainting the city with illegal steroids. Darkman also battles not only Rooker but finding a way for his solving his synthetic skin formula forever.

Who is Peter Rooker & What Has He Done?

Rooker opens the movie killing one of his business associates, finding he'd tainted a shipment of steroids. Darkman interrupts the sale and steals the money used for the deal, not before killing one of Rooker's henchmen. Rooker, seeing this, sees that the Darkman is real and wants his "power." The next morning, Rooker, who floods the city with illegal steroids, finds out a recent shipment of his steroids has gotten more people killed, dubbing the killings as "White rage." Ryan Mitchell, running for District Attorney, purposes to stop Rooker's flow of drugs, and Rooker must deal with DA Mitchell.

Seizing an opportunity, Rooker has his mistress Dr. Bridget Thorne "work" with Darkman. She will use him, able to perfect his liquid skin formula and repair his nervous system. Darkman finds out it's a trick and Rooker and she uses him to become their own flood the city with a new black-market steroid synthesized from his own adrenaline. After being tortured and used for more experiments, Darkman escapes and Rooker's wife catches him in the act with Dr. Thorne; Rooker dismisses her and finds out that one of his men has been killed by Darkman. While Darkman infiltrates his life, Rooker has his men injected with the synthetic super-strength so they could kill the DA, not caring about the psychological side-effects.

The following night, Rooker has dinner with his wife, where he has Dr. Thorne killed since she was going into business for herself. Rooker goes to Mitchell's election party so his men could assassinate him on live TV. Darkman stops the attempt and Rooker, injecting himself with the super-strength formula, has taken his family hostage, seeing Darkman care for them. Rooker destroys Darkman's research disk, killing any chance of replicating his skin formula at its current state. A fight ensues, with Rooker putting his family in danger, leaving his daughter scarred by steam. While Darkman reclaims his sample of permanent liquid skin, he tricks Rooker into falling in an industrial shredder, exploiting his ideal of strength with the notion of family, which kills him.

Any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuses?

None. Rooker is obsessed with the idea of power, or strength. Even when his men are killed, he doesn't bat an eye even though he appears to be friendly with them. He also does play the piano in his spare time.

Heinousness Standard?

At the start of the movie, Rooker kills a fellow associate of his and his men, for tainting the drugs he was going to be selling. Following this, he hears that his illegal steroids have been killing people and orders a hit of Ryan Mitchell, whose running for DA is aiming to stop Rooker.

In the past, he has cheated on his wife multiple times. Rooker takes his current mistress, Dr. Bridget Thorne, to makes it appear that she knows how to solve Darkman's synthetic skin formula indefinitely. They capture Darkman and put him through a series of tests, torturing him through an electrical shock device, so they could use Darkman's own adrenaline to produce a new super steroid. Powerful enough to flood it into the city's drug market, making anyone just as strong as Darkman.

Rooker's own relationship with his wife and daughter is not a loving relationship. His wife even knows how many times he has cheated on her, and he neglects his own daughter. When Rooker injects him with a super-strength formula, he gleefully puts her and their daughter in danger, resulting in their daughter being scarred with natural steam.

Finally, Rooker also uses his own men to be used as guinea pigs so they could be empowered with the synthetic super-strength steroid.

Final Verdict?

An easy Yes. It's classic Jeff Fahey, whose performance rivals Durant in terms of nastiness. While, yes he is hamfisted but he is also cold and sinister.
