During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Keeping my
to Breen, I really feel like the fact that he could have possibly had selfless reasons for doing what he did does it for me and I by no means feel that he's an "easy" yes. Still, if people disagree they disagree.
I just wanted to say that I think I'll be taking a hiatus from this thread. I will be back at some point, but it'll be when I'm ready.I just get too stressed out here and I'm going through a stressful time in my life at the moment. If you're wondering, no it's not this one candidate, it's just how I've been feeling in general for a while. Anyway, cya guys soon.

My sandbox of EPs and other stuffSince today is 06/15/2021, it has been two weeks since the physical release of Roll Over And Die Volume 03.
Roll Over and Die is a Yuri, Dark Fantasy Light Novel series starring Flum Apricot and her companion Milkit. The setting of the story takes place in a world where everyone is born with an Affinity. These Affinities can be Common Affinities, such as Water or Fire, or a Rare Affinity, such as Hero, Nature, or Reversal. The story begins with Flum originally being a ‘Chosen One’ to be part of the Hero’s Party to save humanity and defeat the Demon Lord. Unfortunately for her, she has the rare affinity known as ‘Reversal’ which causes all her stats to be 0, so it seems like a useless affinity because no one knows what it does.
One of Flum’s teammates betrays her and sells her into slavery. She is branded with the mark of a slave on her cheek. However, the slaver deems her as useless and decides to feed her and other slaves to ghouls. For extra sadistic pleasure, he leaves the slaves a cursed weapon to make it look like he is giving them a fighting chance, but the sword will melt the body of anyone who touches it.
When Flum decides to take her chances with the sword, it heals her instead of melting her. Flum realizes her Affinity ‘Reversal’ allows her to wield cursed weapons. Afterwards, Flum kills the ghouls and the slaver. Flum takes the only survivor, Milkit, with her, and she resolves to forge a new life for herself and Milkit. That is only the beginning of their adventures. Along the way, they gain allies, such as Sara, Eterna, and Gladio, while also encountering new enemies, such as Dein, Satils, and factions from the Church of Origin. The two of them will need each other if they hope to survive in this Dark Fantasy world, so they can live a new life together.
A majority of the series takes place in the Capital, but there are parts where Flum’s adventures take her outside the capital. For context of this entry, Volume 03 partly takes place in the village of Sheol, also known as the ‘Village of Salvation’. In this village, the Necromancy Team for the Church of Origin, headed by have used Origin Cores to bring people back to life. They live there along with heir still living family members.
I would like to present characters who I believe deserve the label of Complete Monster. There is no doubt in my mind that they deserved to be considered this. Additionally, the storylines for these characters have been completed, and outside of a flashback or a dream, they will never appear again. They are:
• Unnamed Slave Merchant
• Satils Francois – Original Human Form
• Satils Francois – Post Resurrection
In regards to Satils, they are technically the same person, but at the same time they are not the same person. Volume 03 reveals quite a bit of information regarding how someone who is resurrected is both the same and a different person. They can have the same memories, but they may have different behaviors or something along those lines. Not too different from that Arnold Schwarzenegger movie the Sixth Day where some characters who were killed were brought back to life multiple times through cloning. Except in this case, Origin cores are placed in their bodies to revive them. Regardless, both incarnations of Satils are depraved.
///
Candidate # 1: Unnamed Slave Merchant.
For the Unnamed Slave Merchant, he is the Starter Villain of the story, and he is the Small Role, Big Impact type character. Additionally, I know that even though he is unnamed that doesn’t automatically disqualify him from being labeled as a Complete Monster since the unnamed scientist in Fullmetal Alchemist was labeled as such. I also know that characters with small roles in stories can also qualify as a Complete Monster. Anyway, he was the one that made it possible for Flum to be sold into slavery in the first place.
• It is established in the first chapter there are laws protecting innocent civilians from being turned into slaves, but this character shows a complete disregard for the said laws when he plays a role in Flum receiving the slave brand all in the name of making a profit.
• Additionally, there are laws regarding the treatment of slaves which the slave merchant violates, so regular civilians, such as Leitch and Welcy, do not look kindly on him, and they certainly do not feel bad for him after he is killed. They show more concern regarding the fates of the illegally traded slaves than what happened to him.
• In a flashback in Volume 03, it is established that this Slave Merchant transitioned newly born babies into the slave market. One of them included Milkit.
• He played a role in mentally torturing/programing slaves, such as Milkit, into believing they were less than human, and they deserved to be sold to make him money.
• Volume 03 revealed he would obtain young slaves and sell them to depraved individuals, such as Satils Francois, who enjoyed torturing them because they would be more responsive than older ones.
• As demonstrated in the second chapter of the Light Novel, he will throw all the slaves he considers to be worthless into a special cell. Afterwards, he unleashes ghouls on the slaves, so they can be ripped apart while he watches on for entertainment.
• The flashback of Volume 03 implies that feeding slaves he considered worthless to ghouls was a regular occurrence for him.
• He has a sword mounted inside the cell, and he tells the slaves that if they wish to fight back against the ghouls to save themselves all the need to do is pick it up. However, he doesn’t tell them the weapon is cursed. That particular cursed weapon will melt the body of anyone who touches it, and he gets enjoyment out of seeing one of the desperate slaves melt into a puddle.
• One desperate slave begs him to spare her life, and she promises she will do anything to make herself worthy of being sold. He at first acts like he will spare her life. However, he is pulling a Bait the Dog tactic on her. He stabs her in the throat because he thinks she reeks, and he enjoyed killing the slave himself.
• When Flum begs for mercy because she didn’t do anything wrong, he blames her for costing him a lot of money. He tells her that dying will allow her repent for the sin of being useless. He then goads her into picking up the cursed weapon if she wishes to not die at the hands of his ghouls. Then, he proceeds to laugh at her misery.
• Flum is only spared because her ‘Reversal’ affinity allows her to not only wield the cursed sword, but rather than melting her body, her body is now able to heal like Wolverine.
• After Flum kills the slaver’s ghouls, he begs for his life, and she proceeds to kill him by cutting him to pieces in the Light Novel.
Quotes from the Manga adaptation: • As he is unleashing the ghouls: “Now then. As I’m sure you already know, you no longer have any value to me as merchandise. So I’ll be disposing of you. However, after how long I’ve let you live, I’ve lost a lot of money feeding you. So I think the least you can do is entertain me with your deaths. A fitting end for a bad investment, wouldn’t you say?”
• After Flum begs for mercy by saying she didn’t do anything wrong: “Yes, you did. You brought this on yourself. They told me you were part of that party of heroes! So I paid a fortune for you! You tricked me! Swindled me! Took away tons of my hard-earned cash! You weren’t even good enough to be a servant, you absolute garbage! You want to atone for your sins?! Then just roll over and die! But if you’re so opposed to dying. Then you could always pick up that sword and fight.” (Laughs while Flum is crying)
///
Candidate # 2: Satils Francois – Original Human Form
Satils Francois is a noblewoman who appeared to run legitimate businesses, but she is involved in smuggling for the Church of Origin, provides fundraising for the Church’s Necromancy Team, and has dealings with the illegal slave trade. She used to do business with the unnamed slave merchant to acquire young slaves, specifically young girls because she enjoyed torturing and breaking them. One of them included Milkit.
• Satils had an obsession with destroying people who were naturally beautiful, especially those that could rival her.
• Satils specifically sought out the services of the Slave Merchant because he could get her young slaves that would be responsive to torture.
• From the time Milkit was ten to thirteen, Satils physically and mentally abused her. This included feeding Milkit poison that caused Milkit’s face to become inflamed and required bandages to cover her face.
• Milkit witnessed Satils kill multiple slaves during her time of servitude.
• After Satils grew bored of Milkit, she sold her back to the Slave Merchant even though Satils knew he would most likely kill Milkit for entertainment.
• Satils had a hidden room created that acted as a torture chamber for her ‘playthings’. After the said torture chamber was completed, she killed all those who worked on it, so it would remain secret.
• She would torture many other slaves, and she would do things such as removing their eyelids to deprive them of sleep.
• She hired rogue adventurers to poison and murder Susy Chalmas, wife of Dafydd Chalmas, because she was an inconvenience to her plans. She outright admitted that she had Susy killed to satisfy her urges.
• When she learned that Milkit has recovered from her abuse, she hireed the same rogue adventurers to abduct Milkit and bring her to her torture chamber.
• Satils proceeds to brutally torture Milkit physically to the point of nearly causing her to pass out while telling Milkit that her master will not come for her.
• Even as Milkit begs for Satils to stop, Satils continues to crank up the torture.
• When Flum arrives to save Milkit, she makes it clear that she intends to kill Satils. Satils pathetically begs for her life by trying to bribe Flum with money. Flum is not amused by this and proceeded to torture Satils to death.
Quote:
• (As Satils begins to torture Milkit) “You can scream as much as you like. No one will come and save you, or rather no one can. This place is my escape, my private paradise! The only ones who may set foot in here are myself and my playthings! Now dance! Move like a butterfly with its wings plucked off!! Dance I say like a child in agony from a thousand cuts!”
• “You’re quite entertaining, Milkit! It’s almost like you were born for me to kill you!”
///
Candidate # 3: Satils Francois – Post Resurrection
After Satils Francois was resurrected shortly after Flum killed her, she doesn’t waste time making her presence known to Flum and Milkit. It was implied that she attempted to bait Flum and Milkit into a trap, but thankfully Flum and Milkit didn’t fall for it, and they pulled a tactical retreat. Unfortunately, their next encounter with the resurrected Satils didn’t go so smoothly when they meet again in Sheol. Upon her reintroduction, she revealed she has control of the Focal Core which is the source of the Necromancy project.
• Satils wasted no time using the Focal core to cause the dead people revived with Origin cores to attack their loved ones. This included the revived Susy attacking her husband Dafydd.
• The results of her actions are shown that a number of other living people in Sheol were killed by the very people they loved and were happy to see again in a revived state.
• As Dafydd is dying, she mocks/brags about how she put an end to his wife in the first place which pushed him passed the Despair Event Horizon before she proceeds to finish him off because he outlived his usefulness to her.
• She creates a monster body that is composed of the dead people that were revived by Origin cores as well as the people that were just killed.
• Satils would have been successful in massacring every living person in Sheol if it weren’t for the actions of Flum’s friends, Eterna, Gladhio, and Ottilie.
• Satils literally becomes a monster by combining her body with the monster body composed of the corpses of Sheol, so she can kill the remaining people of Sheol, and no one could oppose her.
• Satils puts the Milkit in danger, so she could truly go after Flum. She proceeds to capture Flum inside her monster body.
• Upon capturing Flum, Satils desired to kill Flum in front of Milkit just to see Milkit suffer some more before Origin ordered her not to kill Flum and deliver Flum to him.
• Satils attempted to crush Milkit despite Milkit having no way of defending herself.
• Satils keeps Flum trapped inside her monster body which subjects Flum to Mind Rape due to all the legion of voices from all the dead people Satils absorbed. This temporarily renders Flum unable to remember anything, including her own name.
• Satils actively tries to destroy what is left of Sheol while Gadhio and Eterna do their best to protect the survivors.
• After Flum is saved by Milkit, Flum confronts Satils on all her crimes. Satils continues to show a lack of remorse or care for all the people she’s killed. She continues to display a lack of comprehension of good in general.
• After Satils finally dies for the second time, Flum and Milkit comment on how such a despicable woman had such a fitting end.
Quotes:
• (To Dafydd) “Watching her writhe around in pain, her hands and ankles smashed, screaming your name, was absolute rapture! That’s when it hit me – Susy dedicated herself to justice just so I could kill her. What a great and wondrous God we have, to put a woman like her on this planet just for my delight and delectation!”
• (To Flum) “Who needs love, dreams, or hope for the future anyway?! Look at you, you even need to drag Milkit around everywhere you go! You’re a little punk pretending to be a hero!”
///
Individual It goes without saying that all three of these examples are individuals.
///
Heinous Actions All three of them commit heinous acts. As I mentioned before, the story quickly establishes that there were laws protecting innocent civilians from being turned into slaves, and there are laws regarding the treatment of slaves. The actions that the slave merchant and Satils commit violate these laws by a large margin. Regular civilians, such as Leitch and Welcy, as well as other good characters, such as Eterna and Gadhio, are disgusted by the actions of such people. During the climax of Volume 03, Flum even outright calls out Satils for committing heinous actions.
///
Visible to the Audience We the audience are able to see them commit a number of these actions. While some of these actions are told to us, we see a lot of them happen as well as the results of some actions. For example, we see how Milkit is completely broken because of what Satils and the slave merchant did to her. Additionally, Milkit’s face is bandaged for most of Volume 01 because Satils poisoned her which caused her skin to become inflamed. We saw the Slave Merchant use ghouls to massacre a bunch of slaves he considered worthless, we see Satils torture Milkit, and we see Satils cause a massacre of the village.
///
Irredeemable Considering all the people these characters murdered in cold blood, it is safe to say there is no redeeming them, and they don’t want redemption in the first place.
///
They hold nothing back They hold nothing back with the horrible things they do. The slave merchant has ghouls to eat his useless slaves while Satils had a torture room created to play with her slaves before killing them. Satils also initiated a massacre to make her monster form more powerful.
///
Exceptional In regards to exceptional, I think the earlier list covers that. However, one major thing that stood out is how much their horrible actions caused Flum to hate them so much that she took time torturing and killing them. Flum fights a lot of characters in the series. What she does to her adversaries is a case-by-case basis.
When she sees someone being robbed, she injures the assailants, and gets them thrown in prison. When it comes to Milkit, she is far more protective, and she is more likely to kill if Milkit is harmed. When she witnesses two people attempting to assault Milkit, she kills the one who was about to force himself on her. Flum intended to kill the other one immediately, but Sara convinces her to spare him. When the one Flum momentarily spared attempted to kill her, she then strikes him down.
Flum kills a lot of people in self-defense. She tends to be quick about it, such as decapitating them. Additionally, even when she hates people, such as Dein, she doesn’t necessarily automatically decide to kill them. She has many clashes with Dein, but it is only during their final battle that she delivers her full wrath on him after everything he has done throughout Volumes 01 & 02.
At the end of their final fight, Flum leaves Dein in a Fate Worse than Death state partly because she did want him to suffer, but she was also prioritizing rescuing Milkit. Additionally, Dein’s death scene is not as long as the slave merchant or Satils’ death scenes. I think it is partly because while Dein committed his fair share of horrible acts, he had some redeeming qualities to him that showcased he wasn’t completely evil. Additionally, while Flum killed Dein, she was engaging in a life and death battle with him while the she had the slave merchant and Satils at her mercy.
The slave merchant is the first person Flum kills. In the Light Novel, she cuts him to pieces, by cutting off his limbs then partially decapitating him. Flum wanted him to suffer for all the evil he put her through and for massacring all the other slaves. The horrors he put Flum through awakened a darkness in her that she didn’t know she had.
For Satils, you could say this situation was more or less a sequel to Slave Merchant scene partly because they were business partners, these characters bring out a rage and darkness in Flum. After learning Satils had dealings with the slave merchant, Flum figured out that Satils was Milkit’s previous owner and the one that poisoned Milkit. It took a lot for Flum to stop herself from beheading Satils right after their first meeting. After Satils kidnapped and tortured Milkit, Flum proceeds to torture Satils extensively to the point that Welcy is quite disturbed despite the fact she hates Satils with a passion.
///
No Regret or Remorse Both of them are amused and enjoy the actions they take. They have no remorse or regret for their actions whatsoever.
///
Agency The slave merchant and Satils certainly could make a moral choice, but they don’t because the actions they are committing bring them too much sadistic joy.
///
Backstory or moral justification There is no moral justification for the slave merchant or Satils nor does the author waste any time in trying to make it seem like we should be sympathetic to them in anyway.
///
Defined Motives Regarding their motives, both of them certainly get a lot of sadistic joy from what they’ve done. The slave merchant is definitely motivated by greed and entertainment. If he can’t get a profit out of his slaves, he will be entertained by their deaths. Satils gets entertainment from torturing slaves, and pleasure in destroying anything that can rival her ‘beauty’. She enjoys exercising her power to crush those that get in her way. She enjoys being on top, and she loves destroying people in order to obtain new heights.
///
As I mentioned before, the slave merchant and Satils will most likely never appear in the series again because their storylines have concluded. I believe the actions they have committed during their involvement in the story should qualify them as a ‘Complete Monster’. I hope you all agree and will all vote in favor of these nominations. Have a good day.

Berserk Button: misusing Berserk Button
Also, the second and third candidates are literally the same person, just resurrected, but we don’t really consider them different characters. And yes, I read the part about resurrected characters being different, but they both seem to have the same personality, so they could probably be treated as the same.
