Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Ah, so it's either a totally different person, or Halley was already a dark cultist? Hmm, I'll give a tentative yes to him then.

How many candidates total will there be?

Yeah pretty much. The series never outright confirms either way which it is, but neither are good options.

We've got three more, assuming they all count it will bring the series up to a total of six. But Rayner is the last one who tried to end the world. The next three have vastly less resources and more niche candidates. All the others that tried rituals are simply to outclassed by Magnus, Nikola and Rayner.

  • The Man with No Name: Angel Eyes is a wicked sheriff suffering from a severe case of Chronic Backstabbing Disorder. Forcing the population of Red Bluff to pay for his protection racket, Angel has the local blacksmith tortured in front of his family, and when the man gives him information on the whereabouts of a train that might be carrying tons of money, Angel Eyes repays the blacksmith by executing him and his family, even his baby boy. Poisoning his own partner to have all the money for himself, Angel Eyes hires bandits to blow up the tracks and shoot at the train—filled with not only private guards but also innocent workers—just for him to arrive at the scene and save the day. Cowardly leaving his deputies behind to save himself after a short encounter with Blondie, Angel Eyes would resurface eight years later as one of the worst foes of the Man with No Name.

I owe some writeups:

  • Black Beetle, a member of the Reach's Warrior class in their invasion of earth, if a thuggish brute who revels in the destruction of those he terms as "meat." Black Beetle assists in the abduction and safeguarding of Metahumans for the Reach's experiments, gleefully attempting to murder any hero he comes across and also helps to rig a bomb to wipe out the Team and numerous Kroloteans. When he decides the Ambassador in charge has failed too many times, Black Beetle usurps his schemes with the singular goal of the total annihilation of earth to hide any evidence of the Reach's illegal activities.
  • Hercules 1983: The wicked princess Adrianna begins by helping her father King Minos to usurp Thebes, helping to slaughter temple guards before initiating a brutal conflict across Thebes that leaves countless people dead. • Twisted: John Mills is the misogynist chief of the SFPD, who is apparently a caring father figure to heroine inspector Jessica. In truth, Mills had an affair with Jessica's mother before murdering her and her other lovers, framing Jessica's father and killing him, too. When he grows disgusted with Jessica's "disease" of promiscuity, he murders any of her lovers before trying to frame and murder her partner as well with willingness to kill Jessica if she cannot be "cured."
  • Blacklist: Bastien Moreau, "The Corsican" is an assassin on the Blacklist who forces surgeon Hans Koehler to give him a brand new face. Murdering Koehelr and his team, then his own subordinates, Moreau intends to murder a diplomat by bombing the UN and killing everyone present even if it goes against his ideas of anti-globalism at the core, so he can keep the image. Moreau has a long history of terrorist attacks in the name of nationalism, murdering a German diplomat before realizing he is being used and attempting to turn on his employers and Reddington at the end.
  • Hercules/Xena:
    • Maliphone is the ruler of Bethos along with her husband Polonius. Wanting her own children to reign over Bethos, Maliphone helps to spearhead rounding up any child under a year old when she learns of a prophecy that Polonius's children will be displaced. • Mephistopheles is the first true ruler of hell. A depraved demon who subjects every being in his realm to horrible torture forever, Mephistopheles masterminded the death of Xena's mother and seeks to take over the earth to turn it into a brand new hell. Attempting to trick Xena with horrific mental torments, Mephistopheles plans to break the barrier by having Xena kill her own innocent baby to unleash him upon the world.

This was...a big pain, but I sorted the Valdemar tree by first appearance, so here's what I got:

  • Heralds of Valdemar:
    • Prince Ancar is the sadistic, spoiled son of King Alessander of Haldorn, who murders his father to take over the throne. Murdering the Herald Kris and capturing the Queen's Own Talia, Ancar tortures her more for sport than information, framing them for his father's death to find an excuse to start a war with Valdemar. Having his cousins killed to secure his claim to the throne, Ancar uses Mind Control to force his troops to fight mercilessly and even drains his own lands of power to increase his own.
    • Mornelithe Falconsbane, aka Ma'ar, steadily divested himself of any good intent he may have once had, starting the Cataclysm that devastated much of the world and had a ripple effect through time itself. Though defeated, he didn't actually die, as he had set up a Grand Theft Me so that he could take over the body of any his descendants once they started showing signs of magical ability. Ma'ar continues this over centuries, "seeding" the world with children so as to never run out of descendants and practicing his magic upon them, intending to claim ultimate power no matter the cost. Through this end, Ma'ar would force Starblade, elder of the k'Shenya, to destroy his people's Heartstone, almost wiping them out and corrupting their valley.
    • The White Gryphon: Hadanelith is a minor villain who possesses the Gifts of Empathy and Mindhealing, but uses them to serve his own sadistic desires rather than to aid people. When first discovered, he is found to have been using his gifts to warp the minds of women until they live only to serve him in slavery, sexually and otherwise. He is exiled from the city of White Gryphon under the relatively loose laws and customs of their society. Rather than die in the wilderness, he makes his way south to the Haighlei kingdoms and is recruited by the Evil Chancellor to assassinate high ranking members of their society in order to frame the delegation from White Gryphon. In doing so, he is permitted to indulge his sadistic fantasies and accordingly tortures his victims before killing them.
    • The Collegium Chronicles: Master Cole Pieters puts children as young as four and five to work in a mine. He forces them to sleep in a basement, feeds them so little that they supplemented their diet by stealing the pig slop whenever they could, and is known to beat the children to a bloody pulp with a mallet in front of the rest of the child workers should he deem it "necessary" for control of them.
    • Closer to Home: Brand is the charming, psychopathic heir of House Raeylen. He begins by seducing young Violetta of House Chendlar with false promises of love, but when the King arranges for him to marry Violetta's older sister and promises them an estate, he comes up with a new plot: His men try to kill every member of both Houses Chendlar and Raeylen at his wedding feast except for himself and Violetta, so that when he marries her, he'll hold three estates instead of one. Brand succeeds in killing his father, and when apprehended, he calls Violetta "a pair of legs and an empty head", and admits that he planned to manipulate Violetta during their marriage so that he could use his new wealth to purchase the services of a High-Class Call Girl.

@43 Oh, not sure to be honest. The comics mostly show off Blondie's gunslinging prowess and he's surprisingly less of a bastard.
