Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

If Darkseid passes. How is this quote?

"I have turned one hundred thousand worlds to dust, looking for Anti-Life. Looking for those who robbed me of my glory. I will stride across their bones and bask in the glow of Anti-Life. And all of existence shall be mine."

Yes to Darkseid and Dracula, though I will say that if they go with Snyder's plans for Darkseid it's gonna be an entry we keep returning to

And yeah, Steppenwolf doesn't count, just to be 100% clear - his motivation is portrayed sympathetically and it's clear that he just wants to go back home.

Like the Darkseid quote

[down][down] They've gone back and forth on everything so many times on it I've lost track and stopped caring, I'm just waiting until they actually announce a movie to think about it

[tup] Darkseid and his quote. Been waiting a long time for this one. Also, I don't believe that Snyder Cut!Steppenwolf due to him being much more of a tragic villain who only does what he does just so he can go back home. That, and he was mercilessly mocked by Desead.

Also, I have a quote in mind.

I have problem with Gregor's rewrite

He also has a girl gang raped for speaking when he wanted silence.

Gangrape and him wanting silenence are two different events. Gangrape happened after tourney and inolved unnamed innkepeer's daughter whose age one of his man estimate to be 13 years old. Demanding silence happened after Gregor took Harrenhall from Vargo but only involved him breaking Pia's teeth and nose. Given how this crime is minor compared to others i would cut it and replace it with this.

Following the tourney, he and his men gangrape innkeeper's daughter

I may be biased against it cuz it's an Afton one but I feel it'd work better at Sadist. Also you can't put potholes in a quote as per site rules, in the description line you'd wanna add something like "On William Afton..."

[up] Fine with the change, I'd just like to see some version of a condensed entry run and Gregor marked settled.

So...

  • Ser Gregor Clegane, aka "the Mountain that Rides", is a sadist who serves House Lannister and one of the most feared men in Westeros, rumored to have murdered his sister, father, and two wives. When he was 12, he burned half of his younger brother Sandor's face when the latter played with one his toys. At 17, he dashed the infant Prince Aegon's head against a wall, then raped and murdered his mother, Princess Elia. While at a tournament, Gregor murders one of his opponents, then tries to kill another and Sandor after losing a joust. Following the tournament, he and his men gang-rape an innkeeper's daughter. Unleashed on the Riverlands, Gregor and his men rape and murder anyone who falls into their hands. At one point, for ten days, Gregor picks one person each day from a group of villagers to torture for information. After one villager volunteers to save her daughter, Gregor has the daughter tortured the next day to make sure the mother didn't leave anything out. He tortures Vargo Hoat, including cutting strips of flesh from Hoat and feeding them to him, before letting Hoat die. During a duel with Oberyn Martell, Princess Elia's brother, who asserts his responsibility for the murder of his sister and her children to him, Gregor's only concern is that Oberyn got the order of events wrong, correcting him before brutally crushing Oberyn's skull.

I changed "in service to" to "who serves", for the fact that with that difference, both Gregor entries are the EXACT same length (233 words) [lol]

Here's Suzie BTW:

  • Suzanne "Suzie" Boreton herself is seemingly a downtrodden working-class mother who reveals her true nature after receiving the Mage's apprentice wand. When called out as being responsible for every bit of misery in her own life, Suzie angrily incinerates the women reprimanding her and joins the Mage at the promise of being made Queen of Wendimoor. When the Mage abandons his own plans for conquest out of fear at losing, Suzie takes matters into her own hands, conducting a massacre in a hospital to murder a man prophesied to defeat the villain in Wendimoor. Taking command over the Mage's armies, Suzie continues his plan to manipulate the land's warring leading families into killing each other before having her men kill the surviving few. Declaring herself the most powerful being in existence, Suzie moves to murder the few who can stop her, proving herself a monstrous megalomaniac just like her mentor.

Based on the EP, [tup] to Darkseid. Also [tup] to the Darkseid quote too. Still gotta see it sometime, but it’ll take at least four hours.

I’ve sat through both Deathly Hallows movies together through mostly one sitting before and that’s about four and a half hours without stops (which I did stop a few times admittedly). So there you go.

I can’t imagine they won’t follow this up somehow given the praise and success its apparently achieved.

Suzie's relationship with the Mage is... weird, they kinda fluctuate between Big Bad and The Dragon, Big Bad Duumvirate and Disc-One Final Boss and Dragon Ascendant. Personally I'd leave those out to emphasize things like Vain Sorceress, Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse, A God Am I and hmm... can't think of anything else.

Edit: I see you got Evil All Along in, that's good!

I have a few genuine questions about the Never Again group but hope I don't get punished for this (I'm a regular on this site and sometimes participate in some of the other cleanup threads).

Since the Manga version of Ghetsis has been approved, should we make note of that? The game version is an epic Hate Sink but is infamous with this trope and seems to fail the heinous standard. Maybe a note saying that Game Ghetsis doesn't count but his manga counterpart does.

I think Scar from the Lion King should be on the definitely a CM list. We've established that he passes the heinous standard along with the other criteria. Most the redeeming features people bring up are Alternate Character Interpretation and Draco in Leather Pants rather than valid. He's been discussed to death here already. The Broadway, Lion Guard, and "live action" versions also qualify.

Finally I noticed the note on Spongebob characters has been removed. I feel Mr. Krabs should stay on the Never Again list. I shouldn't need to bring up the edit wars, heated debates, flame wars, and stuff regarding him in the past. While some of his appearances put him above Plankton, Dennis, and the others in the heinous standard, he still has too much trouble passing the general heinous standard. My problem is that all his crimes are Played for Laughs (sadly that includes "One Course Meal") and his portrayals are too inconsistent (a lot of times, he's not even a villain). Even if a webcomic version of Spongebob himself qualifies and the Kraken from the comic is a candidate, Krabs will never count.

I'm cool with the Ghetsis note for clarity but when's the last time Scar or Krabs have been an issue on the thread?
