Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Oh yes, a near page-topper... let the debate begin!

Anyway, here be another Indian film that warrants a discussion.

What is Tonight's Film?

Once Upon A Warrior, or Anaganaga O Dheerudu is a 2011 Indian fantasy-adventure film made by Arkha Media and... Disney World Cinema? Yeah, that's right, part of this movie was funded by Disney's Indian Branch. The more you know.

Anyway, the movie is an action-fantasy epic set in ancient India, where Yodha, a blind warrior and Retired Badass, discover his adopted sister is being hunted by an evil cult, led by an all-powerful, ancient evil who had resurfaced. And with the deadline being an upcoming eclipse, Yodha must fight to save everyone he loves.

Come on Robert, just tell us who is this so-called Ancient Evil.

Alrighty-then.

In Distant Prologue, Irendri is a vain, powerful sorceress, who can create serpents out of thin air and extend her Prehensile Hair into snake-shaped whips capable of ripping flesh, her supernatural skills making her The Dreaded. Desiring total domination of the free world, Irendri establishes the Snake Cult, demanding obedience from her worshippers, ordering her followers to massacre entire villages indiscriminately; in her Villain Opening Scene after the Cult had wiped out a village of it's inhabitants, Irendri then summons a flaming tornado to torch the village to the ground.

After years of domination, eventually Irendri's powers waned as age catches up; her cult was overthrown by the followers of Hinduism, and Irendri was sentenced to be burnt at a stake; however, she managed to curse the gurus as she disappears into a green mist, into a jade locket.

Decades later, the locket ends up in the possession of Priya, a gypsy who — unbeknownst to her — turns out to be a descendant of Irendri. Priya's on-off lover, Yodha, used to be a warrior, but after being blinded in combat, now works as a circus performer for children; an accident results in Priya's locket being dropped into a fire, which unleashes Irendri's soul. The Snake Sorceress has returned!

Upon her awakening, Irendri abducts Priya and revitalizes her Cult, with her influence enough to, even centuries later, instill worship of Irendri through fear and loyalty. Irendri announces her revival, rising her once-destroyed citadel, in the shape of a snake's head, from the ground, turning entire regions into wastelands and began sending her worshippers to conquer surrounding villages; learning from a ritual that a Mystical Waif, a 9-year-old girl named Moksha, is the key to Irendri's invincibility, as draining a Child Mage's life-force during an eclipse (Heh, Total Eclipse of the Plot, cliché) will make Irendri unstoppable, Irendri immediately send minions to abduct Moksha.

It turns out Moksha is Yodha's assistant in the circus, who lives with him like a surrogate little sister after Moksha lose her parents. During the performance, Snake Cult members tried to abduct Moksha, but Yodha kills them all and through a guru in charge of developing Moksha's clairvoyance powers, learns of Irendri's revival.

Meanwhile, Irendri had Priya locked in a cage; despite knowing Priya's lineage as a descendant, Irendri had the helpless Priya subjected to having blood drained, as Irendri's sorcery dictates that she can remain in power by sucking blood of descendants. After another nearby village gets attacked by Snake Cult members, Yodha realizes the Cult is hunting Moksha, and is forced to flee with the girl. Everywhere Irendri spreads her powers, diesease follows, as children everywhere lose their life essence to the sorceress who becomes increasingly powerful from absorbing the souls of the pure, and Yodha, after a discussion from the village guru, decide to assasinate Irendri before the next eclipse (or die trying).

After a series of chases through hills, villages, and a valley, Yodha fighting off two Raven Sorcerors working for Irendri, and a You Have Failed Me scene where Irendri have a Snake Cult soldier who survived his battle with Yodha burnt alive after stepping on the soldier's head as he kneels before her in fear, eventually Yodha reaches Irendri's fortress. Yodha only managed to rescue Priya before getting outnumbered by the Snake Cult, and is forced to flee while Moksha is abducted by Snake Cult soldiers; knowing that Irendri will need an altar in the village to perform the Eclipse ritual, Yodha hurriedly makes his way back...

... and in the village, Yodha discovers the entire population has been cocconed by Irendri, inhabitants sealed alive, because Irendri intends to devour everyone after the ritual to sate her hunger. Yodha ambushes the ritual, killing dozens of Snake Cult members, while Priya managed to save Moksha. But the eclipse has already begun, and Irendri reveals her One-Winged Angel form — this... snake-thing, from the ritual.

A literal monster, Irendri wipes the floor with Yodha, but it turns out the eclipse enhances Moksha's psychic powers too, namely, healing. Reviving a near-dead Yodha, Moksha ends up being ambushed by Irendri, but before the vile serpentine-sorceress can absorb Moksha's soul, Yodha ambush and stabs Irendri's serpentine form in the forehead, breaking her spell, turning Irendri back to human. Priya then rejoins the broken locket, sealing Irendri forever.

Does Irendri Have Any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Nope, no excuses are mentioned throughout Irendri's screentime; all she craves for is power, power, immortality, more power... while she does have descendants, at no point is she shown caring over any of them, considering how she had Priya locked in her dungeon, and fully intending to dispose Priya once the ritual is complete.

She rules her cult by domination through fear, obediance... Irendri is a Bad Boss through and through, and have given plenty of You Have Outlived Your Usefulness moments to the Snake Cult members.

What About Her Heinousness Standard?

The film doesn't have a second Big Bad, with Irendri being the main threat. Sure, there's The Dragon, Sudigundam who carries out Irendri's orders, whose role is just a Mook Lieutenant for Yodha to defeat. And Irendri's henchwoman Chitra who gets stabbed In the Back by Priya in the finale. But compared to Irendri... these two are peanuts.

Should we Count Sorceress Irendri then?

Yes to the first Indian Snake-Morphing Sorceress to grace the CM list

Writing the description yourself on another site then tweaking it for use here is a bit different than straight up copying and pasting close to whole paragraphs from wikipedia - especially since the rest of the plagiarized candidates are clearly taken straight from those sources as well, just slightly tweaked. I think you're okay future, but thanks for the honesty.

Anybody have an answer for me? My post ended the previous page.

Yea to Irendri. Also, have a radio candidate...

What's the Work?

Diary of a Madman was once covered here, the story by Guy de Maupassant...it was adapted into a short radio play by CBS mystery theater, consisting of a dramatized upgrade. Our narrator is Judge Frank Wallace. Brilliant jurist, repectable, married to a lovely woman...except he has a secret: he's obsessed with death and murder, who occasionally goes out to kill people...now, without further ado: Judge Wallace.

who is Frank Wallace?

A nice judge who just happens to be a serial killer, isn't that grand? He believes in one thing: the overwhelming law of nature that provides the thrill of murder. And oh, does he love murder...the episode opens with him escorting a young, 18 year old lady home only to reveal he wants something...she initially assumes the obvious, only for him to draw a knife and murder her on the spot. Returning to his wife, Estelle, he plays it off...before he has another man before him in court who's accused of the murder.

Despite Estelle thinking the man is innocent, Frank assures her he believes the same...but manipulates the trial to ensure he's found guilty and sees him hang for it. His next seen victim is a friendly political columnist, who the judge also guts....unfortunately for him, the man survives and he eventually visits him in the hospital to murder him there.

Another man is accused of the murder, and Estelle finds her husband's diary with all his murders. Horrified, she confronts Frank who holds off murdering her because his wife would invite undue suspicion...Estelle, however, gets one over on him and visits his intended victim in jail and gives him a secre tto taking Frank down. In court, the man loudly confesses to everything, all of Frank's murders...and the egotistical Frank breaks down furiously to claim credit. Ruined, he is arrested...and locked in an asylum for the rest of his days.

Mitigating features?

No, Frank is just an elitist serial killer believing he is enacting some sort of primal human need here. Nothing good to him, just the delight of murder for its own sake like the short story. No care for anyone...even his wife Estelle, he only holds off murdering her for convenience.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

Yes to the Judge.

Potholed Gregor:

  • Ser Gregor Clegane, aka "the Mountain that Rides", is a sadist in service to House Lannister and one of the most feared men in Westeros, rumored to have murdered his sister, father, and two wives. When he was 12, he burned half of his younger brother Sandor's face when the latter played with one his toys. At 17, he dashed the infant Prince Aegon's head against a wall, then raped and murdered his mother, Princess Elia. While at at a tournament, Gregor murders one of his opponents, then tries to kill another and Sandor after losing a joust. Unleashed on the Riverlands, Gregor and his men rape and murder anyone who falls into their hands. At one point, for ten days, Gregor picks one person each day from a group of villagers to torture for information. After one villager volunteers to save her daughter, Gregor has the daughter tortured the next day to make sure the mother didn't leave anything out. He tortures Vargo Hoat, including cutting strips of flesh from Hoat and feeding them to him, before letting Hoat die. He also has a girl gang raped for speaking when he wanted silence. During a duel with Oberyn Martell, Princess Elia's brother, who asserts his responsibility for the murder of his sister and her children to him, Gregor's only concern is that Oberyn got the order of events wrong, correcting him before brutally crushing Oberyn's skull.

Late handy 'Yes' to Dahak and Cyrus, and 'Yes' to Judge

@Power: I would PM emperors and ask about it. Everyone seemed fine with him taking his advantage and waiting on Snyder Cut, so unless a majority chime in that it's fine for you to discuss, I wouldn't swoop in and swipe the proposal without permission from either emperors or most of the thread.
