Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

There's others, even non-qualifiers, in the DCAU who try and blow up entire cities. No to the Weather Wizard.

Speaking of DCAU!Darkseid! Who wants another Michael Ironside keep?

What's the setting?

Night Trap is a 1993 thriller taking place on Mardi Gras, entirely unremarkable except in that it features Michael Ironside as a Satanic, 800-year-old serial killer. Let's go from there.

Who is Bishop? What has he done?

A Faux Affably Evil serial killer with Satanic superpowers, Bishop has been torturing and murdering people as human sacrifices for 800 years in pagan rites—usually women, their tongues ripped out before they're burned alive. Bishop has accumulated a countless amount of bodies over centuries, and in the modern day the hero cop Jason Turner is too late to stop Bishop from ripping out the tongue of an innocent hooker and throwing her to her death out of a window.

Bishop develops a sadistic fixation on absolutely destroying Turner's life; he murders his partner on the force (not alone—he killed the partner of Da Chief in the backstory just so we have two dead partners for the price of one!) and props up his body as a decoy, murders the kindly old landlord who reveals Bishop's true nature by literally scaring her to death, and targets not only Turner's ex-wife Christine but an innocent woman he's befriended named Valerie. Bishop ties up both Christine and Valerie to two separate death traps, forcing Turner into a Sadistic Choice where he's only allowed to save one.

Bishop also kills a few civilians in his obligatory Kick the Dog moments; he blows up the car of a random pedestrian during his first getaway, he sadistically kills a police officer left to guard Christine, and when Turner tries to get information about Bishop's first victim from a fellow prostitute, Bishop gets there first, kills her and hangs up her body to torment Turner.

Any mitigating factors?

Well, Michael Ironside playing a Satanic serial killer with a fixation on destroying people's lives doesn't exactly sound like the kind of guy who'd have a hidden soft side, no?

Conclusion?

Keeper.

@Nywoz: This guy ?

The MO does sound unique at least. Helps that he's aiming for the whole planet rather then just a city.

One other I wanna get up tonight: another Mighty Max candidate, which Powermaster picked up for a cut and a keep respectively not long ago. This one comes from the episode "Clown Without Pity."

Who is Freako the Clown? What has he done?

An evil Russian clown who was born looking like a freak, Freako has decided to take revenge on literally the entire world for the mockery he faced. For a long time, shown first in the Cold Open, Freako has been luring kids to his creepy carnival, whereupon he proceeds to use his funhouse mirrors to twist them into freaks like himself.

Worse than himself, in fact; Freako has turned literally dozens of children into grotesque, tormented Body Horror mutants incapable of even speaking, with misshapen and/or extra limbs and appendages growing out of their monstrous bodies. All the mutants remember that they used to be children, but are helpless to do anything about their condition because of Freako. Freako intends to transform every single person on the planet into one of these abominations, and even tortures Mighty Max and his friends by using the funhouse mirrors to deform them, but Mighty Max powers through and destroys the carnival, sending it collapsing into the earth and presumably taking Freako with it.

Any mitigating factors?

Freako has slightly more of a Freudian Excuse than, say, McDougall, but the show sure doesn't try and treat it sympathetically. Freako's actions are portrayed as abominable and the epitome of Disproportionate Retribution. There are lots of other big bads in the show—not just the current qualifiers—who have tried to kill or hurt lots of people before, sometimes on a planetary level, but Freako's plot was as large-scale as it got and the Body Horror touch, plus all of his onscreen victims being children, I think gives him a nicely horrific niche.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

Super [tup] to Freako

You know, I wasn't sure at first due to the scene telling about his Freudian excuse until you brought him up and made a good point on his Freudian Excuse being a Disproportionate Retribution.
