During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Simon r green and In Death are just books (as the guy who helped make those pages). Theirs no illustrations or anything.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."One this morning from Samurai Champloo...for those who don't know, Samurai Champloo is an anime by Shinichiro Watanabe, combining a tale of samurai with a hip hop theme. A girl named Fuu contracts two rogue warriors into helping her search for a samurai who smells like sunflowers: the wild and wily Mugen and the stoic Jin...episode 10, Lethal Lunacy brings up Ukon, or as he prefers tobe known: Shoryu.
Who is Shoryu?
A villain of the week, Shoryu was born as Ukon, into a samurai bloodline. Studying under a master named Zuikou, Ukon became a treasured disciple of his....a shipwreck left him washed ashore in China where he became aware of a martial art called Hakkei, where he could utilize his own inner Chi to use barehanded...becoming arrogant, he returned to Japan and Zuikou...only to murder another student in a training match. A horrified Zuikou cast him out and an enraged Ukon began to wander, taking the name Shoryu...nobody woul take him and, despising them for shunning his "greatness," Shoryu became a murderer. He began to slaughter the heads of the dojos he challenged, stalking the streets.
Finding Samurai, as he does at the start of the episode, he easily murders them with his Hakkei, becoming a savage thrill killer who hunted down warriors and killed them to test his skills and to satisfy his bloodlust....and the victims? Are bleeding from every orifice with the death clearly an agonizing one. Shoryu has slaughtered so many people that local businesses are even noticing a drop in patronage...when a group of bounty hunters try to take him, he simply kills one and carries on, with Mugen challenging him.
Shoryu challenges Mugen for sport as well, Mugen finding Zuikou, who's become a monk to atone for unleashing such a monster on the world....it comes to a duel with Mugen answering hakkei with Hakkei, but Shoryu's own is stronger...
So Mugen simply pulls a hidden knife at the end of the fight and buries it in Shoryu's heart before he can land a palm on Mugen...with Zuikou sensing his old pupil's death and offering a final prayer for his soul.
Heinousness?
I'd say so. A huge body count, and despite only targeting samurai, it's clear he gives them an agonizing death, hunts them for sport in huge numbers. With such a nasty niche, he stands well over a number of other villains in the series. Maybe not a body count on par with the pirate Mukuro, but he's a lone wolf.
Mitigating Qualities?
None. He's an arrogant martial artist enraged nobody "sees his worth"...conveniently ignoring he murdered a man in a training match after the guy surrendered, bragging that martial arts are just to kill people. He doesn't hunt down samurai for morals, but because they're the only ones he wants to sharpen his metaphorical fangs on....and he knows damn well he holds a remarkably unfair advantage on it.
Conclusion?
Thanks to 43 for helping with him, but I'd say a yes.
I also think Betrayal at House on the Hill and Scripts WON'T have any images. DC Literature MAY, if we get lucky like I did with Marvel Literature.
EDIT: Eh, sure to Shoryu. Seems bad enough for one guy. Another for Show Hayami.

Yes to Shoryu who's a surprisingly interesting one for a one episode villain. He'll talk a big game about wanting to strength Japanese warriors... only to beat one pleading for mercy to death in a dojo match, throwing a fit and going off to murder other dojo masters when they reject him for his bloodthirst. He can talk to Mugen like a Noble Demon... but reacts with rage when Mugen shows the ability to use his Hakkei technique back on him. He's a mad dog Serial Killer under all of his fancy philosophy about fighting and his painful kills give him a niche not replicated anywhere else in the show.
I am in the process of looking for a Fanscription image. But it's a bit hard. Most of it is fan art and I am not sure we are allowed to use that with out permission.
