Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

With 16 upvotes and no objections, Here's The Tall Man but snazzier:

  • Blood and Venom: The Slender Man is the mysterious yet sadistic leader of The Collective who spent his time terrorizing two close families. At one point pretending to be the imaginary friend of the child Charlie before abducting him, he forces Kate into his Cat and Mouse games, only sparing her to prolong her suffering. Even after she "wins", he continues to stalk her, ruining her life and eventually converting her into a Proxy. When her friends Lauren and CR go to investigate, they too are tormented by Slender Man, the latter being Driven to Suicide and the former also being captured, but not before encountering Charlie in a anguished but still alive state. When their old friends investigate a house filled with Slender Man cultists, who proceed to chase them to sacrifice them to their god, the cultists corner the youngest one, Ethan, with the Slenderman himself slaughtering his own men just to lure him out, killing him with his guard down and hanging him on a tree for his brother Aaron to see.

Si to Si, by the way.

This guy is pretty much Toy William Afton.

What is the Work

Harmony & Horror is a web series that is based on the Five Nights At Freddys franchise through the story is original so it is not a Fan Work. The series is about a toy company that is connected to the dark past of its owner.

Who is Martin Greywhinder and What Has He Done?

Martin Greywhinder was the co-founder of M&H Harmony Toys alongside his brother. Even before his truly horrible crimes, he was reported to not be the best father and had several allegations of domestic and child abuse. Martin founded the toy company and eventually became obsessed with creating the “perfect toy.” To this, he was somehow able to make a Deal with the Devil to make his toys life-like, but in order to do so, he had to kill.

A cursed sound from this would result in the deaths of several children. And Martin would begin his quest by killing his entire family first his dog then his son then his daughter then his brother and finally his wife and other daughter. He would eventually switch to murdering random kids using his multiple costumes to lure them kidnap them and finally murder them.

I should mention that after all of these killings he would use satanic rituals to bind their souls to toys where they would still be conscious, basically trapping them in an And I Must Scream fate.

He would eventually meet his demise at the hands of his own creations when he failed to repay the devil. A karmic fate for a horrible man like himself.

Does he have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

None that really holds up by the end.

He does have a family but that is subverted as soon as he murders them in cold blood without remorse. He does claim that the reason he wants to create the perfect toy is because, he was ridiculed for not making perfect ones. But that doesn’t excuse his actions at all and since this is coming directly from him it reads more like an excuse for his crimes, as well as the fact he shows some sadism as well as had no remorse for his crimes.

If you were wondering about offscreen villains that isn’t a problem his crimes are clearly established through flashbacks and dialogue and well we don’t see all of his killings the ones we do establishes a clear pattern for his other crimes.

Does the story have a substantial plot?

The series isn’t the longest in the world but it does have a substantial story. It focuses on the other toys besides just Martin and gives them characteristics and development. And Martin himself is given a clear personality with defined motives for his actions. And he ultimately does get what he deserves in the end.

Does he meet the Heinousness Standard?

He sets it he killed his entire family many children and trapped them in And I Must Scream fates. The only other villain is the devil who only does what he does due to Martin’s deal and doesn’t have the same level of crimes as he does.

Final Verdict?

Yes.

So, I've got some to propose tonight, namely first from Cyber Blue which Scraggle has alreay gotten one in from. I give you...Elder Rozalie:

Who is Rozalie?

One of the Elders of Blue's world and one of the leaders of them, certainly the most visible. Rozalie is also a cackling psychopath who reveals himself midway through the manga....Rozalie is involved in all the horrific schemes and dystopia of the Elders, helping to turn the world into hell, with mass death and attempting to establish the plan for mass brainwashing, the utter erasure of the minds of those on earth to enslave them....Rozalie shows up with his men, gleefully proclaiming his entrance, immediately brainwashing his own men and forcing them to kill themselves, because nobody who knows his identity as one of the Elders can be allowed to survive.

When Blue asks he stop the Conquest of Earth plan, Rozalie gloats it'll be the foundation for a brand new empire over the Galaxy...all started when he helped assassinate the President of Earth....and soon everyone will be brainwashed to follow their commands. With blue challenging him, Rozalie tries to kill Blue's comrades to make him watch first....and then reveals he has a bunch of kids hostage. End ultimatum? He'll kill all the children unless Blue kills himself. ..and has no compunction trying a mass murder oft he kids. An enraged Blue is able to outwit the trap and ends up bisecting Rozalie.

Mitigating issues?

None. The nastiest secondary villain, murders hi own men, is full in on the Elder schemes, tries to murder a bunch of kids just cause? Worst around there, and easily a good contender with Gaza.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

Yes to Martin and Rozalie. Now, while I'm rewatching Samurai Champloo (Lighty will have a candidate that kinda got missed) I'm not thrilled with the entry I made for Mukuro:

  • Samurai Champloo: The bloodthirsty pirate Mukuro raided a ship for gold, while ordering all of the sailors aboard murdered. Corrupting Mugen into becoming hired muscle, Mukuro later abandons Mugen on a cargo ship after he himself makes off with the goods. Slaughtering an entire village with his gang, Mukuro keeps the young men alive to use in the raid of a gold-bearing government vessel. During the raid, Mukuro uses his followers as Cannon Fodder for his trap, before trying to use explosives to kill friend and foe alike, just so he can keep all the gold. Even his own family is not safe from Mukuro, who killed his mother and constantly abuses his sister.

Couple things: Mugen's pretty bloodthirsty for a 'hero' in the first place... corrupted is a misrepresentation, he used and betrayed him but Mugen happily joins up with him again and personally cuts down ship guards in doing so; it's actually implied Koza and Mukuro aren't actual siblings too and I don't think he's so abusive of her it goes beyond generic creepiness that should go in a CM entry.

Anyways, to fix it up:

  • Samurai Champloo: "Misguided Miscreants Parts I & II": Mukuro is a bloodthirsty criminal who tricked Mugen into helping him escape the island they grew up on before betraying him. Going on to form his own pirate crew, Mukuro murders all aboard a merchant ship and brutally wipes out a village, only allowing the strongest of the young men to survive to serve as hired muscle for his latest scheme. Targeting a gold-bearing vessel, Mukuro savagely slaughters all aboard before using explosives to kill his own followers, uncaring as long as he gets to keep all of the loot for himself.

Thoughts? I also put in the episode titles since it's episodic and he's only in the two-parter.

So, I've got a trio to discuss now...from a 1965 thriller film called The Satan Bug, we have the big bad and his two dragons. I give you Charles Reynolds Ainsley, and his two dragons, Donald and Veretti.

What's the Work?

From IMDB: " A germ that could destroy life on Earth is stolen from a biological warfare lab and the thief threatens to release it into the open, prompting a security officer to act. "

Who are our baddies?

Charles Ainsley is a very wealthy Pharmaceutical magnate who wishes to take over the world utilizing the Satan Bug, a virus that is capable of killing all life on earth within a matter of months. Murdering a scientist named Gregor Hoffman, Ainsley takes his identity to develop the disease and several others, including a highly advanced strain of botulism....now, Veretti and Donald are a pair of toughs and Ainsley's chief henchman, in it for money and power...as Veretti has only given them the vaccines. Only several other scientists know of the Satan Bug and the vaccine compositions...so Veretti and Donald murder the men.

Enter our hero, Private Investigator Lee Barrett who's hired to investigate the murders at the nearby stations. With the Botulism strains missing, Barrett is on the case, assisted by "Dr. Hoffman" (Ainsley in disguise)...while Ainsley begins to issue demands and drowns the last scientist who knows of the Satan Bug...Veretti and Donald, however, show how nasty they are by planting the Botulism strands...Veretti plants it in LA and Donald unleashes it in Florida, killing thousands...and Veretti has the virus bomb in LA ready to go off.

Our hero Barrett gets involved with a woman named Ann who's on the case when they, with government agents are captured and nearly killed by Donald and Veretti, which leaves the agents dead...Ainsley reveals himself, though Veretti and Donald are ambushed by the cops and gunned down. Barrett takes the fight to Ainsley who reveals he alone now is immune to the Satan Bug and he plans to unleash it and kill everyone inthe world, living alone rather than give up the power he holds. During a fight in Ainsley's helicopter, Barrett disarms him of the Satan Bug and demands Ainsley give up the botulism vials in LA...defeated, Ainsley simply states the death of LA shall be his epitaph and jumps to his death...thankfully for naught as the vials are found and disarmed in time.

Mitigating issues?

I really see none here. Ainsley is so far over the standard, it's nuts. Multiple murders, the virus bombs, being willing to wipe out all life on earth with a deadly virus? And Veretti and Donald are the hatchet men, performing the murders...but what sets them apart? Both are willing to virus bomb two major cities (Veretti setting it up in Los Angeles) just to show the world they need to submit, or the Satan Bug gets release.

Two nasty Co-Dragons here and Ainsley easily makes it

Conclusion?

I give both solid yeas.
