During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I've got doubts and much of that was plagiarized from the Ultraman wiki.

Stupidest CM: Joffrey's up there, but I'm going with Steele; even putting aside how petty his motive is and the argument as to whether the movie even needed a villain, as pointed out on his Stupid Evil entry on Balto's character page, he could've just followed Balto home, downplayed his help and got the credit, boom, done! But nope, he either gets the medicine home himself or it doesn't get home at all, so he sabotages the journey.
Most entertaining CM: That one might change depending on my mood, so I'll go with the first one that comes to mind, Beast Wars Megatron.
Most entertaining CM is a tough one...
Palpatine, the film versions of the Joker, probably the Disney ones. They stand out certainly and there are probably many others too.

For entertaining CM's, aside from the obvious choices like Bill or Joker, I'd go with General Sarrano. Even if his crimes are treated seriously, the man himself is an absolute riot.

Final boss battle sucks though. Quick-time events are fine; a final boss using ONLY quick-time events isn't; Nemeroth also had that issue.

Eh, maybe I'm weird and don't know a lot of CMs, but the first one that comes to my head besides Joker is Syndrome.

Also ACW I messaged you aside too but just so it doesn't get lost: you changed Katana's name to Evil Overlord. As I was explaining, that doesn't work, he's not ruling his society, he's just a General and I picked General Ripper because it's his raison d'etre: he's got such a murder boner for crushing the rebels that opposed him he's gunning for a guy he fought 500 years ago who now lives on a different planet/in a different timeline because he's such a power-hungry zealot.

Noting here that I think I may take a break from writing my own effort-posts for a few days or so, maybe longer. I mean, it's nice being able to have things to discuss, even if they end up occasionally being duds, but I think I need a busman's holiday. Don't worry. Aside from Shabbat, when I am off, I will still be around to vote on candidates.
Nwot has nicely agreed to give me a belated Purim present in the form of evaluating a Handel oratorio I forgot to get to, and I look forward to that.
I have also recommended a few works to ACW which I look forward to voting on when he eventually gets to them.

Oh Connor lead the rebels... er, Ramirez kinda forced him into it by pointing at him while he was standing in a crowd and Connor just rolled with it... and now, after 500 years Katana suddenly can't handle the idea of Connor living in peace (Tfw my script is due tomorrow and I forgot to give the bad guy a motive so it's time to improv!)
