Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

'Yes' to Himmler, 'No' to Dai Li and Ivan. Also hearty 'Yes' to Fitzwalter and Be'lakor, as well as Laughing Jack!

Alright, one last candidate before I do my write-ups, this one from not only a franchise I've covered extensively, but also a comic I thought I had cleared of any more potential Keepers.

From the original Marvel run of G.I. Joe, its spin-off one-shot series Special Missions, let's talk #22, "Decisions."

Who are they?

"Bill" and "Mary" are a pair of mysterious, uber-sadistic Terrorists Without a Cause who repulse the third member of their group, Erich, with their "love of death."

What have they done?

For absolutely zero given reason, Bill, Mary, and Erich go on a vicious massacre at an airport, using machine guns to mow down innocent civilians. Bill wears a Slasher Smile the whole way through, grinning cheerfully as he fatally wounds a man capturing the attack on camera. Mary then approaches the dying man and executes him, with her lips moving strangely as she does...as a lip-reader hired by the government to analyze the footage realizes with horror, she's not saying anything, but laughing with glee as she kills innocents.

When it's all said and done, 17 people are killed by the terrorist trio. Going into hiding, the terrorists invade the home of a former Marine and his family, with Bill and Mary taking the man, Laszlo, and his wife hostage in the kitchen, while Erich holds their son Mikey upstairs.

Now, the G.I. Joes soon enough learn of this event and where Bill and Mary are hiding, planning to raid the home and rescue the hostages...as it turns out near the end of the comic? Bill and Mary have positioned themselves in the kitchen to appear as if they are the hostage family, while Laszlo and his wife look like the scary terrorists, with Bill and Mary hoping that, should the G.I. Joes attack, they will mistakenly kill Laszlo and his wife instead of the actual terrorists, which will give them time to escape.

As the G.I. Joes realize the truth of the hostages and mount their attack, resulting in Erich being shot dead, Bill and Mary make their move...Mary grabs young Mikey, holding him at gunpoint while Bill takes aim to execute Laszlo and his wife, but the G.I. Joes manage to kill Bill before he can fire.

Mary, using Mikey as a human shield and threatening to shoot him in his kneecaps if he struggles against her, plans to use him as a hostage to get herself onboard a nearby biplane and escape justice. A horrified Laszlo, imploring the Joes to attack nonetheless, as Mary will absolutely kill Mikey once she gets away, swipes a gun from a Joe and takes aim....as Mary mockingly taunts Laszlo that no matter how good a Marine he was, he would never shoot at her and endanger Mikey, Mikey quickly reveals the Oh, Crap! fact that Laszlo wasn't just any Marine, but an instructor at the Marine sniping academy.

With zero time to react to this news, Mary is coldly, ruthlessly shot in the head by Laszlo, saving Mikey and ending the terrorists.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

None of either, Bill and Mary both pretend to be good-natured civilians...while acting to throw off the G.I. Joes. As soon as the curtain comes down—and as seen in the airport massacre—they are truthfully a pair of vicious, giddily psychopathic monsters who enjoy killing people, and never share any genuine affection betweenst them, with Mary not even flinching when Bill is shot dead before her.

Heinousness?

So, reason I originally brushed right past these two? The heinous standard for G.I. Joe is pretty high. Compare and contrast the currently-listed CMs from the Marvel continuity, we've got Cobra Commander, Vance Wingfield, and Dr. Venom, who threaten millions of lives and even billions in Cobra Commander and Vance's case....we've also got Otto Totenschadel, a Nazi war criminal who killed thousands in concentration camps and tries to sell Cobra nerve gas to be used on whoever they please, as well as Nobel Peetman, who arms terrorists to threaten hundreds of people and tries to blow up an elementary school filled with kids.

So yeah, very high standard...thing is? Bill and Mary are absolute nobodies compared to all of the above and pretty much 99% of the villains G.I. Joe faces.

They aren't leaders of massive armies, they aren't rogue militant cult leaders, they aren't brilliant scientists allied with Cobra, they aren't powerful ambassadors or Nazis... they're two thugs with a few machine guns. No money to their name, no followers, just themselves and the laid-back Erich, yet they pull off a really horrific slaughter at an airport that leaves 17 people dead all while laughing about it, then try to use a family as human shields—with Bill trying to kill them when they outlive their usefulness with a smirk, while Mary uses a child as a hostage and threatens to kneecap him if he doesn't comply.

Special attention is paid to Mary and Bill's sadistic personalities and the fact that they did all of this for fun, and in a franchise where even powerful dictator generals more often than not don't get near the focus these two's evil do...I think they can pass.

Final Verdict?

I think they can keep on reflection, as they are absolute, bottom of the barrel, not even approaching resources of any other CM, and that helps make their brutal, meaningless acts of violence all the worse.

And the reason Erich ain't part of this proposal is simple: he's used to deliberately contrast and build up Bill and Mary as the true monsters and masterminds—he's even dispatched the quickest, with no real time to get anything personally detestable about him built up, as unlike Bill and Mary, he's not a murder-loving lunatic, and doesn't take part in the ensuing attempts by Mary and Bill to kill the family. Erich is a nervous, semi-reserved, professional-type who seems genuinely unnerved with Bill and Mary's sadism, and even warns Mikey of it.

"Those two downstairs are a breed apart. They eat people like your father for breakfast. They THRIVE on death... especially the woman!"

Another unapproved Complete Monster wick I found, this time on the page for Market of Monsters. I couldn't tell be the context of the entry if it's referring to an actual character or not. Either way, I cut the wick and linked to the thread in my edit reason. Anyone familiar with the series can do an EP if they want.

  • Evil Virtues: Discussed — Henry banishes Kovit to Death Market because his "morals" got in the way of doing his job. When he sees the latter again in Toronto, he recounts how the zannie they hired to replace him was a Complete Monster with no empathy or restraint and claims the disastrous results taught him it's much better to work with someone with a moral Restraining Bolt.

[up][up] It might be because the Warhammer verses have the biggest heinous standard ever, so it feels like the keepers we have are the only characters who truly stand out enough and proposing anyone else, even if they did something like genocide, feels like an exercise in futility since mass murder is as common as eating breakfast. Just talking about 40K specifically, when the imperialist Evil Empire and the Well-Intentioned Extremist alien empire are the good guy factions because everyone else is even worse... it kinda feels like an impossibly high bar to clear.

Or that's how I feel, anyway.

So, Myriad Colors Phantom World was a comedy anime by Kyo Ani about a world where teenagers with superpowers fight phantoms (basically Yokai born from human minds), that range from harmless to dangerous. The anime covered the first volume and has no keepers (thought the final villain passes the heinous standard, she has redeeming traits). However, the light novel has a...strange premise for the next story. The Second Volume goes WAAAAY Darker and Edgier by revealing that the Supreme Deity of the Phantom world is evil and well...

Who is Him?

"Him" is the first and supreme Phantom, born 100,000 years ago from the minds of humanity. Him was very passive and when the corrupt Alayashinki Company discovered Phantoms and started to experiment with them using children, Him merely watched via the Phantoms and the First Chosen Child: Touka.

Touka was kind of a sociopath that developted a unhealthy obsession with the kid codenamed ART, the kid we know as Haruhiko Ichijou. ART and Touka used their combined powers to created a Phantom named Rupa, created out of Hahurito's desire to be loved for his mother. However, Rupa was sealed.

Years later, Touka frees Rupa and sends her to steal Haruyuki's powers. Cue the climax of the first Volume, where Haruhiko manages to defeat Rupa at the last second before Rupa could take the powers of ART and start a mass summoning of Phantoms.

That is where Him does his first crime-on-screen and is already enough to count.

Him is disapointed at Haruhito's victory, thinking it is boring. So Him decides to use his vast power to create a new world, a exact copy of the main world right up the last moments of the fight against Rupa, where Haruhiko's hesitation to kill his motherly figure leads to Rupa sucessfully taking his powers and carrying a mass summoning of Phantoms that anhilates humanity.

...Him realizes he fucked up and a dead world is boring, so he decides to revive 1/3 of humanity to keep things interesting. So, a post apocalyptic world where humanity lives in underworld cities with teenages turned into Child Soldiers to protect the cities from the constant attacks is born.

When Haruhiko goes to the ruins of Alayashiki to fought Rupa, he meets Touko who orders Rupa to return Haruhiko's powers. Him corrupts Marcosias, Haruhiko's demon dog into a beastly being that turns Haruhito into a Artificial Phantom with troubles controlling himself. Using this form, Him slowly corrups Haruhiko into rage episodes that almost kill his loved ones, hoping to break him.

Touko is revealed to having followed Him's will, stopping from killing Haruhiko's friend due to Him's orders.

In the final fight of the volume, the protagonists find beds filled with people frozen with Touko's Time Stop ability, including Shousuke's, Haruhiko's seemingly death friend and alternate selves of themselves from the original world.

By kidnapping these people and messing with their minds at Alayashiki, Touko was able to create a phantom spawning factory that would spawn dangerous Phantoms that attacked humans. Eventually after a Boss Rush, Haruhiko loses himself and attacks his friends to which the original Haruhiko stops him after being told the truth by Rupa, who wants to free "her son" from Him and Touko's manipulations plus Leela's Heroic Sacrifice to save Haruhiko's soul. This lead to a fusion between the two Haruhiko, which creates a strongest Haruhiko that is emotionally stable, Touko escapes and gives him the ability to travel across worlds.

Both Haruhiko becomes one and Him is both surprised and worried at it, saying that he will wait and see...

Heinous Standard

So, his first actual action? Creating a paralel world where a dangerous Phantom won and proceeded to wipe out two thirds of humanity. In fact, it actually lead originally to the utter anhilation of humanity which Him retconned because that would be boring. Thus dooming a humanity to live scared, trying to survive and depending on superpowered Child Soldier s.

Then, he proceeds to work with Touko in trying to break Haruhiko's mind. Taking pleasure with messing with the mind of a teenager.

Touko alone is heinous enough, being a murderous formed Creepy Child turned into a godlike Psychopathic Womanchild that freed Rupa to wipe out humanity and create a world where humanity fights for their survival. All of her acts? Him outright empowered her, all of Touko's crimes are because Him found her interesting.

Mitigating traits?

No Blue-and-Orange Morality, Him is cleary aware that he is causing tragedies and he enjoys it, going out his way to get "interesting" situations.

He is impressed at Haruhiko overcoming all the shit he threw to him, but this is obviously not affection and more "The toy doesn't break? How cool!", with Him mentioning how he will savour "the epilogue of the tragedy" while thinking in how he has become a actual danger to Him.

Verdict?

Sadistic Deity that creates a paralel world where humanity is almost wiped out and forced to live under constant stress in a fight for survival while messing with the mind of a teenage boy and empowering a sociopathic teenager hellbent on keeping the world a hell. All because he was bored and wanted to see a interesting story.

Well I got a sick day off work so I might as well EP the Shadow Lord.

Note: after becoming an Eldritch Abomination, an "it" pronoun is used to emphasize loss of humanity.

Since I already EPed Jack, you can check there for the premise of Deltora Quest.

Who is the Shadow Lord and what has he done?

Born Malverlain, a mortal native to Dorne and gifted in sorcery, particularly dark magic. Malverlain was heir to become Chieftain, but had two brothers he considered rivals. When his parents passed, Malverlain challenged his older brother (next in line) to battle for the throne. Both of his brothers joined forces, overpowered Malverlain, and banished him with a spell. Furious, Malverlain swore vengeance on his brothers and would return one day. Malverlain conjured a boat and sailed to the "Isle of Four Sisters" a beautiful island home to four sisters who loved to sing with equally beautiful voices. But Malverlain hating beautiful things, imprisoned each sister on the island's far corners. Although separated, they continued to sing to each other, eventually leading Malverlain kill each sister one-by-one. However turns out the Sister' singing was soothing a great Beast slumbering in the center, who now awakens and destroys the whole island, to which Malverlain barely escapes with his life.

Malverlain arrives in Deltora (then called Land of Dragons), where the Toran sorcerers repelled his evil presence. The banished Malverlain is confronted by an Emerald Dragon, to which Malverlain offers it power in exchange for the dragon's servitude. The dragon refused and burned him. Forced to flee into the mountains, Malverlain decides to conquer this land, recruiting bandits and killers as servants. One day he finds an egg (believing it to be a Dragon's which he could raise to be a killer), but it turns out to be an Ak-Baba egg (which would grow into a giant vulture like monster). At first furious and almost killing the bird, Malverlain stops and decides it could be of use to him after noticing its behavior and anatomy. From this Ak-Baba's flesh, Malverlain would then create seven Ak-Baba that he had altered to be his perfect loyal killing machines.

Malverlain decides to invade the Northern lands of Pirra, as its defense being the Pirran Pipe was easier to overcome. When a Piper had died and disagreement over the three Piper candidates, Malverlain approached and suggested they compromised by splitting the pipe into three parts, to which the squabbling pirans agreed. With no defenses, Malverlain invaded the next day. While the Pirrans escaped, he took over their land and turned it into the Shadowlands. At this point Malverlain's body is consumed by his powers, becoming the disembodied consciousness known as the Shadow Lord. Now ready to invade Deltora, ShadowLord's armies invaded in their thousands, killing anyone they found and plundering countless villages. Ak-Baba also hunted the dragons to near extinction. Things changed when a blacksmith named Adin had a vision to forge a belt, seek out each of the tribe's gems, and unite them into the Belt to repel ShadowLord's forces. Adin became King of Deltora with all tribes following his command.

Although defeated, SL still remained and observed Deltora for a millennia. Learning the belt relied on the people's faith in the King, SL created the shapeshifting Ols and inserted them as Chief Advisors to manipulate the Kings. They would make the Kings complacent, prevent them from reading letters from the public, allow them only one offspring to weaken the bloodline, limited the times the Belt was worn (eventually only for coronation), and sometimes poisoning/killing the King or his allies. SL had enchanted the palace with a fog, that would make them blind to the suffering of the people. SL also created the poisonous Four Sisters (based on his encounter earlier in his life) and placed them at the four corner of the land. Its servants then created a plague of rats in Hira to drive the people off, where the "grey tide" was placed and would be released if the Sisters stopped singing.

During the reign of King Endon, the Belt was finally broken and the gems scattered by the Ak-Baba over Deltora, allowing the Shadow Lord to invade the land. The Shadow Lord's reign was brutal, oppressing the people who experienced poverty and starvation. Grey Guards patrolled the land and often captured and brought people to the Shadowlands for experimentation, as well as branding slaves like animals. It wasn't until Lief and his companions managed to reassemble the belt that finally broke its hold over Deltora.

However SL succeeded in capturing thousands of Deltorans and experimented/brainwashed them into being obedient slaves. Forcing the heroes to assemble the Pirran pipe to rescue them. With this plan foiled too, the Four Sisters plan comes into play, where they would poison the land while SL's servants protected them. By the time the heroes destroy three sisters, SL grows impatient and wants to hurry his failsafe, weakening the Final Sister to release the Grey Tide which would grow and consume all of Deltora and killing everyone. This was only stopped with all of the Dragons working together to eliminate it.

SL returns in Three Doors where he attempts to attack his homeland of Dorne, sending a spy to cause civil war, but his plan was exposed and he fails. Except in an Alternate Timeline where he succeeds and breeds skinners there to attack Deltora again.

Mitigating Factors?

Hah, nope. SL believes it is entitled to have whatever it wants. A selfish bastard who treats minions like tools or animals, even branding them to dehumanize them. The only thing it has affection for is its Ak-Baba and thats more out of their usefulness to it.

Heinous Standard?

As I already said before, this guy/thing sets the bar the highest. A power hungry megalomaniac who has repeatedly killed/enslaved/experimented on thousands upon thousands of people, whilst manipulating generations of positions of power. So petty that if it couldn't have the land, it would rather Kill Em All.

Final verdict

I think thats enough characterization. [tup][tup][tup]

I'm actually wondering if Thaegan the Sorceress could count. While she doesn't kill people she does tend to subject them to Fate Worse than Death curses, for no reason other than sadism and spite. She sort of has a mitigating factor of having "children", but it's left vague on how much it equates to love.

Sure to Jack, Fitzwalter, Be'lakor, Him, Shadow Lord.

For Bill and Mary, I hesitate. It seems like a Van Zant situation, where they do the most with what they have, but the standard's so high it makes it hard for them to count (even though DBZ's standard is obviously higher).

Alright, I guess both Warhammers will get their own pages now (though I'm intrigued as to who in 40K could stack up to the current crop).

For the Warhammer quote, either of these 3 would work:

"I am the harbinger of your demise. I am the nightmare in all mortals. I am the thing you fear the most. I am death."
Valkia the Bloody, Warhammer

"Drachenfels. The Great Enchanter. A devil in human form, who cheated Death for centuries unknown; a man with appetites so base they lay beyond satiation; a necromancer, torturer of the dead, dismemberer of spirits; a vileness made flesh; a wizard, a scholar, a monster. Untold are the reaches of his barbarities, uncounted the number of his treacheries, beyond belief the depravities of his practices. Was ever such a vileness born of mortal flesh?"
Lives of the Depraved, by Konrad Steinhoff, Warhammer Fantasy RPG 1st ED—Castle Drachenfels

"Konrad von Carstein was completely mad. Even when he had walked among the living, he had the reputation of being a blood-mad butcher, cruel, merciless and insanely ruthless. For his pleasure, he once had ordered every cat in his domain to be used as spot for his crossbowman. On at least two occasions he had peasant villages put to the torch because he didn't like the smell. He tried his mother for the crime of having given birth to him without his consent and then had her bricked up in her own tower. Acquiring the power and longevity of one of the Undead did nothing to strengthen his already shaky gasp on reality."
Warhammer Armies: Undead (4th edition)

For 40K, we can either use the current Tabletop Games quote or another one about Bile:

"To Bile himself, there is only one title that does his magnificence justice – the Primogenitor.
He believes that in him is the Emperor’s boundless artistry reborn. He claims to understand the secrets of creating Space Marines and even Primarchs, and though his creations are extremely strong of body, they are rarely of sound mind. To witness one of Bile’s genetic byblows is to lose a shred of sanity, for they are disturbing indeed. Bile has left a trail of foul deviants and twisted abominations wherever his ships have landed. His name has become a curse to the High Lords of Terra and those of the Apothecarion who have learned of his legend. Many believe that he has irrevocably tainted mankind’s gene pool, polluting it with hidden growth strains and lurking corruptions. Some scattered cults even worship him as Pater Mutatis, father of all the mutants that skulk in the underbelly of the Imperium. It is a belief that Bile does nothing to dissuade."
