Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Vile: On Rat'Lar. I vote Yes. But after watching the Linkara's review isn't the Scrubb that they first meet, strikes Lois, and orders the destruction of Scrubb for them attacking him a different one than Rat'Lar. I mean I have never read the comic myself, but he specifically points that out in the review. I just want to be sure.

Still unsure, because every hostile faction in Division goes around murdering civilians and the heinous standard is pretty high. But for now I change my vote to a [tup] for Barret.

[up][up]Well, aside from him looking near exactly like Rat'Lar, the fact that he was the one, who give orders, ultimatum and sets the time for Superman and Ali (24 hours) and has the authority to just order a strike on the city (something only Rat'Lar shown to have authority over), i assume he is Rat'Lar, because such an arrogant and petty behavior is shown to be uncharacteristic for all Scrubbs, aside from Rat'Lar. Literally every other Scrubb shown to value honor and won't attack anyone unprovoked or for such slight offenses like interrupting.

Deleted this from Hitman (1993):

Since all of David Mitchell's works take place in the same universe, should we group both of his entries together like this? I put Thousand Autumns first because it was released first.

  • David Mitchell's works:
    • The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet: Lord Abbot Enomoto has his monks impregnate the nuns at Mount Shiranui Shrine and then has them and Abbess Izu take their babies away and murder them, keeping up the illusion they're alive via letters. If that wasn't enough, he deceives the nuns into thinking that they will be released from the shrine after 20 years of service. Instead, his master monks give them a drug that kills them on the way down the mountain and they end up buried in numbered graves, all to eliminate loose ends so that Enomoto can use the blood of the babies in a tonic to perpetuate his life and youth.
    • The Bone Clocks: Immaculée Constantin was the second member of the Anchorites, a group that drank people's souls, particularly children and the mentally disabled, to fuel their immortality. After being rejected by a 7-year-old Holly Sykes, Constantin bore a grudge. Corrupting Hugo Lamb, Holly's one-time lover, Constantin directs him to perform unsavory crimes, such as torturing Crispin Hershey for information on Esther Little, Constantin laughing in the distance. Right before the final battle, Constantin mocks Holly on her age, makes a crude joke about her relationship with Hugo, threatens to murder her family so Holly will "howl with regret" and pulls other petty jabs. When she reveals to Sadaqat that they lied about letting him join the Anchorites-with casual racism to boot-she gleefully murders him. Complicit in the deaths of hundreds to fuel her lust for immortality and with a sadistic streak she takes pride in, Constantin was the face and the worst of the Anchorites.

I haven't read Thousand Autumns, but one of the apparent main characters from that book (Dr. Marinus) is a main character in The Bone Clocks, and Bone Clocks outright acknowledges the events of Thousand Autumns. Marinus also appears in another novel of his that I plan to check out, Slade House.

[down]Sounds like a good idea.

Sure. Also speaking off which since Six of crows and Grisha trilogy are part of the same universe. The Grishaverse. Could we group them together too. Like so. Both series are being adapted as one miniseries on netflix too so the connections are pretty strong.

  • The Grishaverse:
    • The Grisha Trilogy: Alina would desperately like to believe that the Darkling—also known as Aleksander Morozova—has redeeming qualities and a reason for what he does, but in truth, he's just playing to what she wants to hear. A narcissist, stalker, and abuser, the Darkling exploits the emotional, psychological, and sexual vulnerabilities of Alina and the other Grisha, while blaming others for his own failings and for the violence he inflicts upon them. He sexually harasses and stalks Alina; blinds his mother for warning Alina about him; mutilates Genya for helping Alina escape; threatens to torture Mal and Alina in front of one another to ensure their cooperation; hunts down and kills Alina's only maternal figure; and erases an entire town from the map in a demonstration of his power. Aiming to destroy all nations besides Ravka, Darkling reveals that his goal is not to empower the Grisha, as he had claimed, but to rule the world in his own name with Alina as his enslaved, mentally-broken bride.
    • Six of Crows:
      • Jan Van Eck is a seemingly-respectable merchant who turns out to be an egotistical sociopath obsessed with his own glory and reputation. Callously disowning his son Wylan for his dyslexia that has made him illiterate, Van Eck divorces his wife, throws her into an asylum and tells Wylan she's dead so he can steal all her assets. When his new wife is pregnant, Van Eck tries to have Wylan murdered. After enlisting Kaz Brekker for a job and learning Kaz has Wylan hostage, Van Eck later attempts to betray Kaz and have Wylan murdered via having his ship sunk. It turns out Van Eck is behind a scheme to cheat his fellow merchants and distribute jurda parem to enslave the Grisha, or those with magic, subjecting them to addiction or death, all as long as he profits from the chaos he inflicts.
      • Heleen Van Houden, or Tante Heleen, the cruel owner of the brothel the Menagerie, buys teenage girls from foreign nations and cruelly trains them to be Sex Slave prostitutes. From Inej Ghafa's backstory, we see this involves horrific abuse, both physical and psychological with Heleen repeatedly having her whipped and beaten, even having a girl who kept some money from a client cruelly murdered in front of the other girls as a lesson. Even after being freed by Kaz, Inej is intensely scarred by her time at the Menagerie, and Heleen gleefully taunts her of it when they meet, even trying to have Inej killed later. Utterly reprehensible and dedicated to making a fortune from the sexual enslavement of countless young women, Tante Heleen is one of the worst that Ketterdam has to offer.

Falcon and Mir: You can request those (Falcon, just use David Mitchell (Author), without the apostrophe-s, and slot it under D for David, since that's how Simon and Stephen are organized).

EDIT: I've also de-potholed The Bone Clocks one, at The Bone Clocks.

EDIT 2: Scratch the first thing. I sent you a PM. It's called the "Mitchellverse".

  • Complete Monster: Freddy Krueger returns once again in this Interquel to continue his never-ending killing spree. Gleefully haunting the dreams of Springwood for over twenty tears and setting his eyes on Nancy Thompson's old roommate, Cybil, Freddy brutally murders her friend and husband, revealing his intentions to mask the latter's death as a tragic accident that would subsequently "drive Cybil to commit suicide". Planning on using the young Jacob's psychic powers as a bridge to "have a hot time in the old town tonight", Freddy tries to manipulate him with the memories of his father, one of his many victims. Committing a series of murders by proxy to claim more souls with the help of his unstable girlfriend, Devonne, Freddy orders her to kill Jacob's mother and anyone with her, leading to Devonne shooting up Mercy Hospital before Freddy eventually betrays his lover and leaves her to die.

[tup] Fanfic!Doctor Dante, Barret, and another Krueger.

Would also be open to a Princess Shroob re-EP.

Also, having just beaten Pocket Mirror, I could make a case for the Strange Boy counting. The other characters do not really contribute to the standard of heinousness, seeing as all their actions are inside All Just a Dream, and the Strange Boy himself is responsible for all of them. That being said, I could also wait for Little Goody Two Shoes to come out. Since ElfenLiedFan90 is not here anymore, I hope no one minds me reserving it.

  • ERASED:
    • The Serial Killer, Gaku Yashiro, is the intelligent and gleefully sadistic murderer driving the plot forward with his killings. His cruel tendencies arising as a child who alleviated his boredom by drowning pets and luring young girls to his rapist older brother, the killer eventually murdered said older brother and gained a taste for killing, primarily of young children. As an adult carrying out his long-time fantasies of killing dozens of children and framing innocent people for the crimes, the killer flings his fiancée out of a window when she becomes suspicious of his crimes, and stabs Sachiko Fujinima to death when she realizes his true identity. When Sachiko's time-traveling son Satoru tries to thwart his crimes in the past, the killer tries to drown Satoru before murdering his way into a political position solely to allow himself easier access to potential victims. In his final confrontation with Satoru, the killer tries to drown the man's close friend Kumi while forcing Satoru to watch, before attempting to evade capture for his crimes by burning himself and Satoru alive, bragging even in defeat how he has done nothing morally wrong, merely indulged in a hobby he truly enjoyed.
    • The unnamed, manga-exclusive, and flashback-only older brother of the killer manages to stand out as horrific and monstrous despite only appearing in one chapter. A sociopathic bully, the brother regularly assaulted his own little sibling and other kids at his school. Showing his true monstrosity, the brother formed a partnership with the willing killer where, after the killer lured little girls to him, he would rape them, a process that went on for years and resulted in dozens of rapes. When the brother accidentally strangled one of his victims to death trying to keep her from calling for help, he tried to frame his younger brother for the crime, showing no regret or empathy for his victim. Though only a teenager, the brother made his mark as the most monstrous character in the story along with his brother.
  • Mai-HiME franchise: In this dark Magical Girl Genre Deconstruction, these are the worst villains the heroines have faced:
    • Mai-HiME: The Obsidian Lord/Prince, the will of the HiME Star itself, is a maniac with a desire to wipe out humanity in both versions:
      • Anime: The Obsidian Lord/Prince is the leader of District 1/the First District. Long before his awakening, he had Mikoto Minagi and Reito Kanzaki raised in a cult, making Mikoto kill her own grandfather and eventually possessing Reito. After using Nagi Homura to create the monster Orphans and manipulate the heroines into destroying the rival Searrs Foundation, getting scores of people killed as a result, he forces the heroines into the HiME Carnival/Festival, a Deadly Game in which they must destroy each other's CHILD, which will result in the person they love most dying, under the threat of destroying the world via Colony Drop if they refuse. Having held these bloodbaths numerous times in the past, he, as Reito, manipulates Mikoto, Shiho Munakata, and Mai Tokiha into fighting each other, deliberately getting Takumi Tokiha and Yuuichi Tate killed to break Mai. He also takes the victims of the battles and traps them in pillars to use the souls as power. When Mashiro Kazahana confronts him, he restrains her and puts her maid, Fumi Himeno, under mind control to serve him. Finally, he reveals that he intends to make Mai, the winner, into his bride, and have her kill Mikoto before using her to birth his new, "perfect" race to replace humanity after he kills them all.
      • Manga: The Obsidian Lord/Prince is the mastermind behind the monster Orphans who seeks to destroy humans after having nearly done so in the past. Having possessed the bedridden Takumi Tokiha, he orders Nagi Homura to create the Orphans and cause chaos, while also manipulating the rival Searrs Foundation into attacking. He has Nagi transform Pochi, an Orphan that Mikoto Minagi has been caring for, into a monster that attacks the heroines and is forced to kill itself to save them. He later uses the Star to corrupt Shiho Munakata, turning her into a possessive maniac who kidnaps Yuuichi Tate. Revealing himself to Mai Tokiha, he uses her love for Takumi to turn her into his minion and bride, then broadcasts his plan to the world and, to show he is serious, obliterates Washington DC. When the other heroes infiltrate his lair, he has Mai and his creations, the Great Cosmo Beauties, brutally beat them. Finally, he betrays the Cosmo Beauties by absorbing them into his CHILD form, and tries to use the HiME Star to wipe out humanity.
    • Mai-Otome:
      • Grand Duke Nagi Dai Artài and John Smith, from the anime, are the respective leaders of the Artài Principality and the terrorist organization Schwarz. Desiring to Take Over the World, the two begin by firing an energy cannon on a crowded stadium, injuring many, then unleashing their armies on the Kingdom of Windbloom. Smith also forces Erstin Ho, whom they have raised to be a spy, to attack heroine Arika Yumemiya, while Nagi manipulates Nina Wang into joining him and has her also attack Arika, resulting in Erstin sacrificing herself—to their amusement. Once in power, the two exile Queen Mashiro and the poor population into the desert to die while also using the corpse of Lena Sayers to create the Valkyrie, Otomes that must obey Nagi under pain of electric shock should they refuse his orders. They then order Nina to use the Harmonium to destroy entire cities and kill everyone within, intending to spark a world war. Upon the heroines returning, the two men send their minions to kill them all. Smith then attempts to kill Sergey upon the latter's betrayal; when he fails, Nagi shoots Sergey instead and uses his life to further extort Nina into following his orders, later having her destroy Windbloom and putting the entire planet in danger out of spite when his plans are foiled. Despite claiming to want to free Otomes from their contracts, their real aim is to force everyone to suffer the pain of war.
      • Tomoe Marguerite, also from the anime, uses her charm to mask her malicious intentions. Throughout the show, she tries to personally take out Arika Yumemiya because she saw her as a potential threat to her affections towards her elder Shizuru Fujino. Her attempts involved trying to convince a gang to rape Arika, knowing that if they went through with it, her Otome powers would be neutralized. She later goes on to betray the Alliance, stating that she deserves to have anything that she wanted, and that everyone's lives, except that of Shizuru's, are meaningless to her. She gladly works under Grand Duke Nagi Dai Artài and John Smith, becoming the leader of the Valkyrie squad and bullying her friends into subservience. Despite supposedly loving Shizuru, Tomoe takes great pleasure in essentially making Shizuru into her plaything. When Shizuru reveals to her that she never loved her, Tomoe rants, noting the similarities between her and the older Otome, and states that she was entitled to be the only person to have her, then finally attempts to kill her and Natsuki.
      • Sergey Auguste Taiki, from the manga, is the true mastermind and a far cry from his anime counterpart. In the backstory, he brainwashed Mai Tokiha and Mikoto into becoming his minions, and used Mai and Kagutsuchi to burn down the village where Arika Yumemiya and the male Mashiro lived, killing nearly everyone inside, then raised the male Mashiro as a pawn. As the Prime Minister of Windbloom, Sergey orders military expansion, bringing mass unemployment. He manipulates the Schwarz and Grand Duke Nagi Dai Artài into causing chaos, and upon revealing this, he orders Mikoto to kill the heroes, resulting in Nagi sacrificing himself—to his amusement. Feigning loyalty to the real Mashiro, Sergey helps her take over Windbloom, making his rule even harsher than before and allowing his soldiers to torment and rape the citizens. He unleashes the Dark HiME to kill the heroes, resulting in Nina Wang and Erstin Ho grievously injuring themselves to save everyone. When the heroes confront him, he traps the male Mashiro in a nightmare, forcing him to relive his brutal bullying, while trying to force Arika and Nina to kill each other, then betrays the real Mashiro and controls Fumi Himeno into killing her, before stabbing the male Mashiro. Finally, he transforms into a giant monster and engulfs Windbloom in darkness, intending to destroy the world that he feels is filled with lies. A total madman, Sergey is said by the male Mashiro to love no one, not even himself.
  • Mazinger franchise:
    • UFO Robo Grendizer:
      • Original manga: The psychotic Barados is the worst of the Vegan commanders. When attacking Planet Fleed, Barados built a mountain out of the civilian dead while abducting the women and children. Barados used them as hostages to get Planet Fleed to turn over their best weapons and proceeded to "release" them—by dropping them down miles to shatter upon the ground. Upon taking command of the invasion upon earth, Barados targets civilians to abduct and ties them to his own mecha when engaging Grendizer, killing several just to prove a point and intending on killing them all to secure his victory.
      • Gosaku Ota's manga: King Vega, ruler of the Vegan forces, is a brutal conqueror who abandoned most of his people to die on their doomed homeworld, deeming them unworthy of rescue. Conquering world after world, Vega had Planet Fleed annihilated, with the people massacred, converted into Cannon Fodder soldiers, or having the women sent to "service" Vegan officers. On Earth, Vega commands widespread destruction from his forces, and when he takes command, intends to set off every nuke in the world to exterminate all life on the planet, something which horrifies even other Vegan commanders like the ruthless Zuril.
    • God Mazinger manga: Prince Eldo is the prince of the brutal alien Dragonia Empire and son of the Golden King Dorado. Introduced saving a girl from cannibal rapists, Eldo brings her to his castle where he strips her naked before using a machine to turn her into a cat-human hybrid to be his pet. Unwilling to use the mask of his father and persuaded by his assistant, Eldo decides to end the war between Dragonia and Mu quickly and breaks the only rule given by his father. Unleashing the alien army the Megalo, Dragonia's forbidden weapons, Eldo uses the chemical, atomic and laser weapons on the Mu's army while enjoying the massacre, and congratulating himself for it before trying to capture the Princess Aila Mu to turn her into his captive. Lacking his father's desire to save his people, Eldo is called out on his actions by the former, who is horrified at his actions.
    • Shin Mazinger Zero: The Juzo Kabuto of the second timeline—despite his short appearance—is responsible for the events of the series. An egomaniacal scientist and grandfather of Koji Kabuto that got information from a version of himself of an alternate future. Juzo Kabuto betrays his family and creates the Mazinger to use it in a war of conquest against the entire world, murdering entire armies and destroying cities until all world leaders bow to him. Bored with his victory and frustrated after realizing that his Mazinger wasn't the most powerful version of it that could exist, Juzo burns the world leaders with the Mazinger despite their surrender and orders Minerva X to reset the timeline and share his scientific developments across the world in order to create an actual challenge for himself in another timeline, leading to the rise of Dr. Hell and creating a cycle of tragedy where the world would be destroyed in multiple ways for either Dr. Hell's ambition or the Mazinger's massive power.
    • Mazinger Z: Infinity: Dr. Hell, stripped of all redeeming qualities, is a ruthless Mad Scientist who sees the world as imperfect and flawed. Deciding to return and create a new world, Dr. Hell erases an entire city to try to get at Mazinger before attempting to murder Testuya Tsurugi after coldly trying to deprive him of all hope. In the ensuing battle, Dr. Hell attempts to annihilate the universe and all that lives just so he can recreate it as the new god, not even showing any care or remorse when his loyal servants die in combat for him.
    • Devilman vs. Hades: In this non-canon continuation of the original Devilman manga, Jinmen is even more vile. Desiring revenge on Akira for killing him, Jinmen makes a deal with Hades, offering his services in exchange for chance of killing Akira. Eventually devouring the souls of Akira's entire hometown, Jinmen trapped them on his shell in his own version of the city, where they can never die. Luring Akira there and tormenting him with the sight of Miki's severed head, Jinmen begins to destroy parts of the town in hopes of killing Akira, torturing all its residents, while proudly intending to keep them as his own playthings to torture for all eternity.
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street:
    • Nightmares on Elm Street: Freddy Krueger returns once again in this Interquel to continue his never-ending killing spree.
    • Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: Freddy Krueger is the same sadistic child-murdering monster he is in the films, and more. Following the events of the film, Freddy continues his spree of evil by once again manipulating Jason Voorhees into finding the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis to grant him reality-warping powers before sending the Deadites against Jason when he turns against him. He takes things further in The Nightmare Warriors, where upon his return, Freddy takes control of the Deadite army, placing Jason as general. At Freddy behest, Jason and the Deadites leave death and destruction throughout Washington, where Freddy takes control of the White House where he reveals his plan for "No Child Left Alive" and the carnage he plans on spreading across the world. Revealing himself to be in an incestuous relationship with his daughter Kathryn, possibly due to brainwashing, when she fights with Jason, Freddy admits he plans to kill her when they are finished. Freddy possesses Stephanie to seduce and abduct Jacob, before encouraging Stephanie to kill as a Voorhees. Upon Jason's death, Freddy absorbs his soul as well before boasting himself as a "Dream God". Now desiring power and domination in addition to his bloodlust, Freddy takes his evil from the films to a more grandiose level.
  • American Assassin: Ghost was once an assassin for Stan Hurley's black ops unit Orion before his reckless behavior nearly got the unit killed, forcing Hurley to abandon him. Becoming a psychopathic mercenary and terrorist years later, he would retrieve plutonium from a group of arms dealers before killing the group, as well as the police on his tail. When learning of Orion tailing him at a restaurant, Ghost kills one agent and murders countless of innocent people before making his escape. He would later murder Hurley's contact before kidnapping him; he would then torture Hurley for abandoning him. When Ghost's Iranian allies gives the components needed to make his nuclear bomb, Ghost kills them and reveals his plans to use the bomb to destroy the U.S. Navy's Sixth Fleet and kill thousands of people just to spite Hurley.
  • My Bloody Valentine 3D: Harry Warden, the original Miner, is a lot more violent and brutal than his counterpart in the original film. Already a thoroughly unpleasant man from the beginning, Warden murdered his fellow miners to conserve his own oxygen after an explosion in the mine, butchers the patients in a hospital, and slaughters a number of partygoers at the mine all while making his way towards Tom, who he blames for the explosion. One of these days, all of you will accept me as your supreme overlord.
