Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous Post
Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Like, I can KIND of see where Vile's coming from, but it seems like Vicious, while MAYBE not having QUITE as high a body count as the other dude, more than makes up for it in personal crimes.

BTW, anyone count in 'DEVILMAN crybaby'', like Jinmen?

Nope Jinmen is barely even a character their as well. So that's a rare adaption where he doesn't keep.

Closest is Ryo whose hit with a big case of Adaptational Villany their but he legit loves Akira and cries over his corpse.

@ACW I've split the quote into two parts, unsure of its length when combined.

First Half.

"Fenrir Greyback is, perhaps, the most savage werewolf alive today. He considers it as his mission to bite and to contaminate as many people as possible; he wants to create enough werewolves to overcome the wizards. Voldemort has promised him prey in return for his services. Greyback specializes in children... Bite them young, he says, and raise them away from their parents, raise them to hate normal wizards. Voldemort has threatened to unleash him upon people's sons and daughters; it is a threat that usually produces good results."
Remus Lupin describing Fenrir Greyback, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

The second half:

"It was Greyback who bit me... My father had offended him. I did not know, for a very long time, the identity of the werewolf that had attacked me; I even felt pity for him, thinking that he had no control, knowing by then how it felt to transform. But Greyback is not like that. At the full moon, he positions himself close to victims, ensuring that he is near enough to strike. He plans it all. And this is the man Voldemort is using to marshal the werewolves."

[tup] both Fenrir Greyback quotes. Man, I forgot how loathsome he was.

Wary raised a valid point RE Foyle; the complaint is practically weaponised in court for Off on a Technicality (I'm now thinking that he put the complaint in specifically as a safety net for when he killed Will's wife), but it does sound a tad "Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking" at least as it's currently written.

@ACW A few pothole suggestions:

And that's all I can think of for right now.

BTW, is there a trope for forcibly drugging people? Not tricking them into taking some intoxicating substance, but outright forcing it on them.

ACW from Arlington, VA (near Washington, D.C.) Since: Jul, 2009
#201158: Feb 9th 2020 at 12:05:44 PM

Like Force Feeding but with drugs? I'm not sure, but it seems like there should be.

I was actually thinking Earth-Shattering Kaboom, but Colony Drop is better.

I've added blackmail; I wanna use Frame-Up too, but that would exceed the pothole limit.

I didn't even know Off on a Technicality WAS a trope. That one's added.

Ah, so Shot at Dawn's the trope for firing squad. That's added.

I've added Humongous Mecha, as well as the Fenrir quote.

Decided that I would give a serious submission a try.

What is the work?: https://archiveofourown.org/works/21081710, a Deconstruction fic for Power Rangers.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?: Viscount Algrin is the field commander, and eventually leader of the Dominion threatening Earth. Prior to the story, he destroyed the mentor’s home planet of Avion Major, wiping out all but one of its people with his pet Mekros. He is also implied to have played a hand in the decimation of the twin planet Avion Minor, having taken one of their life forms as a source of footsoldiers. In the present, he destroys Space Station Garuda, capturing the crew and sending all but the leader into slavery on a distant planet with no hope of return. The aforementioned leader is then brainwashed into one of his lieutenants, made to be a ruthless warrior with no compunctions against killing her former life’s friends and loved ones. He kills both his Queen and her successor to merge their DNA into an ultimate life form with which to conquer Earth. When that fails, he absorbs he powers of all his allies, many of whom are dead, to become unbeatable. He then makes plans to destroy the planet, as a warning to others not to doubt his power, intending to wreak the same destruction on both those who don’t and those who don’t, all because of his conclusion that destruction is the one true way to cement power. In the final battle, he captures the hero’s girlfriend and threatens to kill her, planning to do so regardless after defeating his enemies.

Are they heinous by the standards of the story?: Compared to his first superior, who only destroys planets that defy her, and two of his subordinates, who make an alliance of convenience with the heroes to prevent Earth’s destruction, Algrin stands out as someone even his own undying loyalist acknowledges as insane.

Are there any factors that would mitigate the possibility of the candidate qualifying?: While he does have a Freudian Excuse (his planet was destroyed for defying Queen Uuhcura), this gets shut down when Carrie, who’s grandparents survived Nagasaki and immigrated to America, points out that he still swore loyalty to his oppressor when she did nothing but horrible things to him and his people. Plus when his first pet, the Carrionoid, is destroyed, his only grievance is the loss of a source for the Monsters of the Week.

What is the verdict?: I believe that Algrin is by far the worst the Dominion has to offer in their battle with the Rangers.

Your EP has some weird symbols where apostrophes should be, I've had similar problems before but they can be fixed by going and just typing in a new apostrophe to replace the existing ones.

Dre : 7[tup], no [tdown] Majesty : 10[tup], no [tdown]

If anyone wants to vote or change their vote, here's the EP.

That being said, on the meanwhile, here's their writeups :

  • N.W.A - One Less Bitch (from Efil4zaggin) : Dr. Dre's character is a ruthless pimp that only cares about money. Upon noticing the attractive prostitute Clara, Dre's character decides to pimp her to gain money. However, after accusing her of stealing from him, Dre's character tied her up to a bed, had her gang-raped by his friends before killing her. Later having a sexual relationship with Vicky, he decides to use her as well as a prostitute to gain money, but kills her when he finds out her husband is the District Attorney.
  • Live Squad - "Murderahh": Majesty's character wants to get back at someone for attempting to kill him. He decides to target his entire family, first raping and killing his girlfriend in front of him, handcuffiing him and stuffing a bomb in his mouth, before throwing a baby out the window. When a cop attempted to arrest him and Stretch's character, the latter two killed him.

[tup] to Dr. Dre, Majesty, Amon, Algrin, and Squire Clive Ham- I mean Gatherford.

I’ve gots some quotes for you guys.

Gor: Now this is my plan: I want all of your uranium, plutonium, all your atomic resources. I want your factories, railroad shipping, all your industrial facilities. Your workers will labour around the clock day and night, following my blueprints to build a most powerful invasion force ever gathered in the universe.
General Brown: You mean to enslave the world?
Russian Diplomat: Russia would never agree to it!
Gor: There's a simple answer to that: There'll be no Russia. Your United Nations building will be turned over to me. I will teach your engineers to build a fleet of interplanetary rockets, to be armed and manned by your joint military forces. All under my command.
General Brown: What would you do with all this power?
Gor: I will return to my planet Arous, and through its vast intellect, I will become master of the universe. After I'm gone, your Earth will be free to live out its miserable span of existence, as one of my satellites, and that's how it's going to be.

Gor (In the body of Steve March) blackmailing the world, The Brain from Planet Arous

Fraser Barton Colborne: In any case, I knew my actions were not justified. I chose to murder those people regardless, because I wanted to be on the other end of the whip. I got what I wanted. I regret nothing.
Jeff Mason: You murdered other people so you could feel powerful? You should be ashamed of yourself.
Fraser Barton Colborne: Perhaps I should be ashamed of myself; but as it stands, I am not, because for once in my life, I enjoyed a taste of power beyond my wildest dreams. For once in my life, I wielded the power of life and death over other people; and nothing you, the judge, or anyone else can do or say, not even god himself, will make me regret my actions. Nothing anyone else can do or say will ever take away the raw power I felt courting through my veins as I slaughtered all those people.

Fraser Barton Colborne on committing the Desert Sky Massacre, Extreme Prejudice (2019)

Dr. Botanus: We are going into action. We will be leaving to attack the enemy at once. And here’s what we do about those hostages. The time bomb we set will wipe them out exactly at noon, as we warned.
Curio (A Gargoyle Gang mook): But my brother is in there!
Dr. Botanus: Quiet! Too bad about your brother! He dies with the rest of them!
