Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So here's my second candidate from Wild Knights Gulkeeva.

Who Is He?

Dancer is the Villain of the Week for the sixteenth episode, "The Nightmare in the Morning."

What Does He Do?

During the Darknoids' attacks in Japan, several mercenaries were dispatched to try and take care of Touya, Kira, and the Animanoids. As the protagonists investigate a strange object appearing in the sky, they're horrified to discover that a weapon known as the Devil's Core has been deployed. The episode cuts over to Dancer explaining himself to Giru, who said that he launched the weapon because he needed to "finish off those Beast Warriors and Legendary Knights once and for all! In any old way!" The problem? The Devil's Core will destroy the entire planet—something that is unacceptable to the Darknoids, because they will also be killed in the blast. Even after this is thoroughly explained to Dancer, he refuses to deactivate the weapon and tries to run away. Cornered with no route to escape, Dancer uses one of his robots on the ground to contact Touya's friend, Onimaru, in private. Dancer tells him that he has the ability to give the teenager loads of power (which in reality is the key to launching the Devil's Core). Lem quickly kills Dancer, but not before he convinces Onimaru to take his power, thus setting the Devil's Core on a crash course for Earth.

Long story short, Onimaru later comes to his senses and joins the heroes in stopping the Devil's Core. And they succeed...by having Onimaru pull a Heroic Sacrifice and blowing the weapon out of the sky before it crashes.

Mitigating Factors?

Big fat no to everything here. No loved ones or friends, etc. That being said, he's not a Generic Doomsday Villain or some Giant Space Flea from Nowhere. He was hired by Lem to take out the Beast Warriors and Legendary Knights. And seeing that several other Darknoid soldiers lost to them so easily, Dancer resorted to the only option that made sense: blowing up the whole planet. To be fair, he's not wrong, but what he's doing will doom Athaelia just as much as it'll doom Earth. And Dancer is aware of this, but doesn't care because he was told to defeat the protagonists by any means necessary. Also, on a small note, Dancer isn't legitimately insane.

...

...Okay maybe he is, but to an extent of the Joker or Kefka. He's wacky, he's silly, he's Laughably Evil, but he knows what he's doing and is fully capable of processing and understanding what he does. Hell, the guy had a feeling he was going to die after getting cornered, so he used his last breath to get some random civilian to launch the Devil's Core for him as a final "fuck you" to the Darknoids and the rest of the world.

Heinous Standard Issues?

For a one-shot villain with maybe five minutes of screentime, he almost ends up doing as much damage as Prince Zaza. While Zaza was trying to preserve Athaelia by draining the energy from Earth for his own selfish reasons, Dancer wanted to blow up the whole damn planet.

Final Verdict?

Leaning slight keeper here.

The only thing I'm hesitant about is that Dancer, for all his noteworthy mannerisms, basically amounts to a villain who tries to blow up the world. Admittedly, doing so would've doomed another planet, and his actions would've killed both himself and all of his allies and employers (not to mention that he tried to brainwash Onimaru into having a Face–Heel Turn). Whether or not that pushes him into CM territory is for you guys to decide.

[up] Not in Wild Knights Gulkeeva, no. Now attempting to destroy a city, that's common. Hence why I'm not doing an EP on the Villain of the Week that mercilessly attacked a crowded hospital.

[tup] Zaza, who from what I can tell is basically a Deconstructed Character Archetype of villains like Dhaos, specifically the game version. As the You Bastard! page writes:

  • ...In the actual game, he's a colossal jerk that decided that humanity was going to kill the tree with their prototype manatechnology, and thus attacked, killing everyone who had any connection at all to it. This naturally freaked out humanity, forcing them to speed up production and fire a Mana Cannon based on the prototype technology in order to even have a chance of winning the war Dhaos starts. This kills the World Tree. This makes Dhaos even more angry.

Zaza is basically doing the same thing, waging war and killing tons of people to save his planet even though there are better solutions and he is actively making the problem worse. Difference is, Dhaos is presented sympathetically. With Zaza, it is presented as pure selfishness and narcissism, a desire to be praised as a hero and retain his rulership with no regard for the lives lost as a result.

Just found that connection interesting and wanted to share it.

Also, [tup] Dancer.
