During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

@acw: could we pick a more unique pothole for ruthven then Big Bad. That describes alot of neverkind cms.
Maybe just use The Vampyre as the pothole for his name since that the work he's originally from.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Well, the latter is pretty much on the verge of weeping while telling Quincy what went down between him and "Der Teufel" in Auschwitz, with his experiences with Otto there being why he started the Holocaust Museum in the first place and why he flies off the handle (more so than any of the other anti-Committee protesters shown) when it came to Sumner (at one point saying that, no matter how hard Sumner tries to beat him down, he will never again just lie there and take it and not even try to get up like when he was thrown to the ground and had his teeth beaten out by Otto's soldiers).
According to lighty. He said it is the same guy from the book. Same with carmilla being this one.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."
Berserk Button: misusing Berserk Button
to Evil Otto and fantasy Nyarlathotep Miradomon.
Yay to Otto and Miramadon.
So, I've never seen Deliverance, but I saw that the rapists were discussed way back in 2013 and judged not to keep for lack of characterization. The thread was in its infancy at the time. Does anybody think it's worth it for me to check out the film myself and give them a second look and judge by our current standards, or is this a closed case?
RIP KissAnime. As part of a TRS project, Evil Albino is being dewicked. Any objections to depotholings going on as a result here?
Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand!Evil Albino is definitely a trope though, that I think shouldn't be dewicked in the first place. So yeah, I'm actually formally objecting.
EDIT: Also, fuck it:
- Messenger, by Edward Lee: Aldezhor the Messenger is a Fallen Angel tasked with spreading the Devil's message of "atrocity [and] abomination" on Earth. Corrupting and possessing those who come into contact with his cursed bell striker, Aldezhor uses them to commit horrifying acts of rape, torture, and murder before having them kill themselves. Aldezhor prefers to use postal workers as hosts out of a sadistic sense of irony, and after breaking a post office manager with sickening images of his daughter in Hell, he uses the man to spread his influence to others. Through various hosts, Aldezhor massacres scores of people in a series of savage mass murders, leaving his symbol written in blood at each crime scene. Lusting after the heroine Jane, Aldezhor desires to rape her once on Earth and forever in Hell, hoping to use her lover's body to rape and kill her in front of her children before murdering them as well.

This isn't the thread for it, but yeah, it totally shouldn't be dewicked. Not to mention I've got that pothole in the writeup for one of my older candidates. Doesn't make sense to change it to Undeathly Pallor for Judge Holden, either, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Also, on the topic of older candidates, I've got a confession to make in regards to Remake!Toulon: I rewatched The Littlest Reich the other night, and in the opening titles, there's a comic that shows the events leading up to the movie, and it doesn't actually show Toulon throwing his wife off the boat, just one shot of him standing next to her and the next, one of her flying off the boat into the ocean. She's just said to have committed suicide in the movie, but it could have just appeared that way. I don't think it's disqualifying or anything because I wouldn't put it past this incarnation of Toulon to do that and there's nothing to say he actually loved her, but I just thought I should get that off my chest.
And yes to Miradomon. Sounds like a lot of fun to read.

I'm just going to cross-post this here, and close this off before it becomes a thread gripe:
Complete Monster (and Magnificent Bastard) entries that go through extraordinary vetting are not exempt from TRS decisions. If you do not like a TRS decision that has been made and is being enacted, then unfortunately you are out of luck. The best move to not be blindsided like this is to...participate in TRS.

Yes to Miradomon. I echo ACW's concerns on Otto, although I may still vote yes if Issac and Hyam are shown to be visibly traumatized by his crimes.
