Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

One I'm excited to do.

Whats the work

The Folk of the Air is a YA fantasy trilogy by Holly Black and set in the same universe as Modern Faerie Tales. The books in the trilogy are The Cruel Prince, The Wicked King, and The Queen of Nothing.

Jude and her twin Taryn are ordinary human girls whose life is forever altered when their parents are murdered by their mother's first husband. The faerie who killed their parents in order to have revenge and reclaim his heir, their older sister, takes responsibility for the children he orphaned, taking Jude and her sister back with him to Elfhame.

Growing up a human in the world of faeries, Jude has lived her life as an underdog who keeps her head down to avoid it being chopped off, and is sick of living in fear. In particular, she is sick of being the punching bag of the local bully, Prince Cardan, the cruel youngest son of the soon-to-abdicate king who singles out her in particular when looking for someone to put down.

She aims to turn her life around by securing whatever power she can, and in doing so throws herself into the heart of a battle for control over the future of the crown.

Who is Prince Balekin Greenbriar

The ambitious and ruthless eldest son if king eldred of the land if elfhame (fairy land). Balekin conspires to put himself on the throne over his other five siblings despite his younger brktheir Dain being more favoured by his father as his father nears retirement.

Teaming up with The Lord of the army, General Madoc he tells him of his wife who was still alive with their kid since she'd run off with he'd lover. He kills both her and her husband and takes back his daughter as well as adopting our heroine Jude ans heir sister Taryn (the kids of his wife and her new husband). This was done to allow him to put Madoc under thumb ...not ever realiisng Madoc was smarter then that and was just using Balekin intending to rule for himself eventually.

Anyway Balkin treats his youngest brother cardan like dirt. For years he's Beaten hin, relenetly tormented and abused him seeking to break him for fun since the age of six. During the beginning of the book, after having Jim beaten during a sparing match he tried to focus him to murder a servant girl but cardan refused citing the fact that his one pride is the fact he's not a murderer

Anyway with madoc on dains coronation as king. Balekin kills him when his father refuses to sign over the crown, Balkein files tin a rage and stabs his father to death before massacring the rest of his siblings expect cardan who hid under the table and Jude helps him escaped. The crown itself is where the vows the various courts make to it take place. The first leader Mab has the crown enchanted. Only a member of her bloodline can war it and it must be given by another member of her bloodline or it will detonate killing both people. Which is a reason why Balekin kept cardan alive since without that hes done.

Anyway jude and cardan discover that judes younger brother oak is actually dains son. Dain had attempted to have his pregnant lover poisoned as he has heard that his son would be his undoing. Well the mother died, her friend removed the baby and was able to keep him alive. She later married Madoc as his second wife . With madoc releasing that the kid would allow him a puppet King as a descendent of mab to allow h i rule (No more second Fiddle), though over time he did grow to legitimately care for the boy.

Anyway Jude teams up with King roiben and Severin, the new Alderking who'd come to join under the high king to secure better borders and protection to defeat Balekin in a sword fight and then has crown cardan as king destroying any attempt for Balekin to take over. Him being them imprisoned by his brother.

Right so bad but not too bad go r this series at least.....till The next book Wicked king.

Balekin arranged with the undersea to be free of his prison and plans to with them purge all the various land courts of their rulers allowing Jim control over the entire of her land in return for being joined with the undersea. Escpaing he finds the sservice of the blacksmith who first created the crown many thousands of years ago and could create a new one allowing Jim control. In return allowing them to raid and cause as much chaos as they want on the land. Being the one who actually pushed tjemback to do it, literally edging them on to slaughter his own people.

He kidnaps jude and then tortures her for months in undersea. Starving her , enchanting her painfully, forcing her to drink salt water at times. He hopes to enchant her into killing his brother Cardan to remove the last obstacle. Jude resists since she's been spelled to resist being enchanted into following orders but plays along despite the agony as a way to best him eventually. When he thinks she's ready. He plays his trunp card

He bargains with Cardan that he'll only realse her if the undersea are allowed to invade the court of terminates which roiben rules and cardan forced themto not to fight back during two days as well as giving balkein immunity for his previous crimes and makimgthe him undersea ambassador. As a say to get back at roiben who once embarrassed and since hes a petty asshole he winrwas key that go. This slaughters untold members of Roibens court and even has roibens love interest critically wounded by trying to burn her alive. After that Balekin let's Jude go thinking shes now under his spell to Assinate cardan in which case hell use the new created crown to take over and then fully slaughter roibens court himself. Jude is given a poison only for cardan to be poisoned by his own wineglass w/o balekin can use it as an excuse to blame jude for cardans murder. Jude is able toto stop him from drinking all of it which means he doesn't die but is instead in a painful stupor with her just playing on that he go r drunk and just needs to leave the Room.

Well uh after that didn't work he makes a deal with jude into giving him the crown in return go r the antidote

Balekin is in the garden as he promised, near a blooming tree of silver-blue roses. When I get there, I note figures not too distant from where we stand, other courtiers going for midnight strolls. It means he cannot attack me, but neither can I attack him.

At least not without others knowing about it.

“You are a great disappointment,” he says.

It’s such a shock that I actually laugh. “You mean because I wasn’t glamoured. Yes, I can see how that would be very sad for you.”

He glowers, but he doesn’t even have Vulciber beside him now to threaten me. Perhaps being the Ambassador of the Undersea makes him believe he’s untouchable.

All I can think about is that he poisoned Cardan, he tormented me, he pushed Orlagh to raid the land. I am shaking with anger, but trying to bite back that fury so I can get through what must be done.

“Did you bring me the crown?” he asks.

“I’ve got it nearby,” I lie. “But before I hand it over, I want to see the antidote.”

He pulls a vial from his coat, nearly the twin of the one he gave me, which I take out of my pocket.

“They would have executed me if they’d found me with this poison,” I say, shaking it. “That’s what you intended, wasn’t it?”

“Someone may execute you yet,” he says.

“Here’s what we’re going to do.” I take the stopper out of the bottle. “I am going to drink the poison, and then you’re going to give me the antidote. If it works on me, then I’ll bring out the crown'and trade it to you for the bottle. If not, then I guess I’ll die, but the crown will be lost forever. Whether Cardan lives or dies, that crown is hidden well enough that you won’t find it.”

“Grimsen can forge me another,” Balekin says.

“If that’s true, then what are we here for?” Balekin grimaces, and I consider the possibility that the little smith isn’t with Orlagh after all.

Maybe he’s disappeared after doing his best to set us at one another’s throats.

Anaya Jude tricks h in into putting that prison in her mouth and spitting into a water container to be given to her waiting friend who takes it to make an antidote refusing to allow the crown to a creep like this. This puts h in a rage for being tricked and they duel with her killing on behalf of roiben for what he did to h in and his court.

Freudian Excuse ?

Hes always been a sociopathic prick. The whole reason his father was never going to give h in the throne is because of being a little psyhco. Dain at leafy hide the murderd his ex lover and tried to kill unborn child. Balkein is obviously evil about what a creepy he is.

Other redeeming qualities ?

He doesn't give a shit about his family or his land. Everything he does is because he wants something in return, never for the good of it. Hes a horrible family member and brother to cardan and a smug hatebale prick.

Heinous standard?

This is the darkest work in the series and you what unroll his final appearance he wasn't heinous enough even if he did kill his family and what he did to his brother cardan. Then we see how he plans to use the ubdersea to terrorise the land. Attempt to Mass slaughter Roibens court and force them not fight back. This to burn roibens consort alive to spite him. Torturing jude in horrendous ways. This pushes him over and makes the worst villain in any of the books.

He is The worst villain in the trilogy. The only one to target civilians rather then military targets and to target them on mass like this for petty spite and ambition .

Conclusion ?

Utter scumbag and easy keeper

Uhh.. I found this which gives me pause for Dracula from Monster War:

https://evildead.fandom.com/wiki/Dracula_(Earth-818793)

That page says that Monster War is actually a crossover with the Army of Darkness comic series and there are some mitigating factors in the Biography section. You can read this up and I would appreciate it because that seems to be something that’s not acknowledged in the EP for Dracula.

I have another quote for Fenrir Greyback; this is half of it, but I'd like some feedback before I complete it in case the other half makes it too long.

"Fenrir Greyback is, perhaps, the most savage werewolf alive today. He considers it as his mission to bite and to contaminate as many people as possible; he wants to create enough werewolves to overcome the wizards. Voldemort has promised him prey in return for his services. Greyback specializes in children... Bite them young, he says, and raise them away from their parents, raise them to hate normal wizards. Voldemort has threatened to unleash him upon people's sons and daughters; it is a threat that usually produces good results."

Yes to Balekin and the Bishop...as for Dracula? The one in Prophecy is not the same as in Monster War. That one is much closer to the Vampirella Drac.

If someone's seen the rest, let me know.

Oh right. Theirs a different dracula character in some of these series that were crossing over. Which makes th is sound confusing

Also the version we just put up got decapitated by Magdelena while according to the wikia the one mentioned their dies via stake to the heart by his daughter Eva. So they are different.

Heads up, I reserved discussion for a new show coming to Amazon Prime called Hunters. Stars Al Pacino as a Jewish Nazi hunter. Jordan Peele's an exec producer. Seems interesting enough.
