Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So I was trying to see if there was any type of CM I haven't ever tried before and thhe two most prominent are Literature and Movie. I don't have any possible candidates for film as of now, either because I can't recall any or the ones I can have been propose, but I do have one from Literature. Before in Artemis Fowl we got Opal Koboi, and while she's definitely the height of evil in the series, there's another character I believe reaches this level. Let's try the main villain of Book 5, Leon Abbot.

Who is Leon Abbot and what does he do?

Leon Abbot is a demon and the head of the demon race in the fifth book. Originally named N'Zall, he was one of the demons who participated in the great Battle of Tailte who wanted to continue the fight even when his race was losing. The majority of the leadership disagreed to this and tried to activate a spell to transport the demon race away from Earth and into Limbo for safety. N'Zall and his co-conspirator Bludwin tried to stop them by disrupting the Circle of Warlocks, causing a freak accident which killed all the warlocks but Qwan and Bludwin, and sent N'Zall to the future in the year 2011. After gaining knowledge by his captor Minerva Paradizo about the human race and gaining a crossbow, N'Zall was able to return to the demon race who were now in Limbo, changing his name to Leon Abbot base on the books he read and vying to use his information to take over the race and return to destroy humanity.

He rose to power by acting like a savior and prophet base on the info he got from the books, and tool control of the race with an iron fist. He brainwash the majority of demons to his cause, while killing any potential upstarts who might defy him. He tried to do that with N'1 by hypnotizing him and sent him to Earth intending to kill him. It backfired horribly since N'1 was able to return with Qwan and protagonist Artemis and Holly to stop Abbot's reign and to save the race since Limbo was reaching it's last legs.

Reaching Abbot, they accuse him of using magic which he enforce as taboo in hopes of getting the demon race to turn on him. It didn't work and Abbot was able to sway the people back to his side, killing Holly, N'1 and Qwan. Artemis was able to reverse this by going back in time and using his new knowledge to stop Abbot. After the four and Qweffor the being Abbot merge with to take it's magic power sent the demons back to Earth to be taken by the fairies, Abbot regained control of himself from Qweffor's control and tried to kill the heroes once again before being defeated once and for all. His consciousness was push away from his body and transported to a guinea pig under the care of Qweffor and Qwan.

Heinousness:

A egotistic war maniac who would do anything to keep his power including dooming his entire race.

Mitigating Factor:

If you compare him to Opal he doesn't seem as bad, but saying he's anywhere near the league of Opal is completely false. Opal is an evil genius with numerous books to star and has the capabilities of causing world destruction, Abbot wants to believe he's in the same level but he's simply not. He wants to reign chaos to humanity and enslave it, but as Minerva points out it would be a massive failure due to Abbot's primitive technology and strategies. That said Abbot is still very much a dangerous individual, enslaving the demon race for so long and killing numerous people to keep it, even nearly having his entire race die just to prolong his power even if it will result to his own death.

Final Verdict:

I think he qualifies, but I'll let you guys be the judge. I mean I think he does well enough for his lack of resources.

Decided to make this EP. Apologizes if this has already been discussed.

What's The Work?

Transformers: The Last Knight

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Quintessa is one of the supposed Creators of the Transformer race in the live action film series before the retcon in Bumblebee. She is known as the Prime of Life and appears to be a techno-organic being but much more mechanical than her fellow Creators from Age of Extinction. She created the cybertronians, including Optimus Prime himself making her his surrogate mother, and was the master of the Knights of Iacon who served as her personal guard and warriors.

Quintessa at some point went to war with the ancient evil god known as Unicron and their battles were documented thousands of years ago, even by mankind. Through the eons, Quintessa was driven mad and became obsessed with destroying Unicron to the point that she cast aside her benevolent role as a goddess and creator and became known to her knights as the Great Deceiver, a manipulative and ruthless being who would forsake all her creations in trying to destroy her ancient enemy.

The Knights of Iacon rebelled against Quintessa and stole her staff which contained the power to control and shape Cybertron itself. They came to Earth during the times of King Arthur and through the persuasions of Merlin, became allies to Arthur and mankind, forming an order called the Order of Witwiccans and buried the staff with Merlin whose DNA was imprinted on it, making only his descendants being capable of using the staff.

Furious, Quintessa left Cybertron and went away, no doubt to rejoin her fellow Creators. Thousands of years later, they hired Lockdown to go to Earth and find and capture Optimus and bring him to them. Forever Lockdown failed his mission and was killed. Optimus then decides to find the Creators himself and takes off into space.

Quintessa returns to Cybertron, now a barren graveyard, and finds Optimus frozen in space, and rescues hims. She at first tries to speak affably to him, but the minute Optimus tries to kill her, Quintessa drops the act and attacks her creation. Quintessa blames Cybertron's destruction on him, in which Optimus states that Megatron started the war but Quintessa doesn't listen and strikes Optimus across the face, scarring him.

Quintessa tortures Optimus and reveals her plans to him that she intents to revive Cybertron by using her staff to absorb all of Earth's energy, which would kill everything living on it, including humanity and the surviving Cybertronians. She reveals that Earth is also Unicron and therefore this is also a plan to destroy her ancient enemy once and for all.

Quintessa then brainwashes Optimus into her servant called Nemesis Prime and tasks him with retrieving the staff, in which Optimus under her control kills two of the Knights of Iacon and almost kills his friends Bumblebee and Cade Yeager, only for Bumblebee to speak again and snap him out of it.

When Optimus fails the mission he was brainwashed into doing, Quintessa allies with Megatron, the very Decepticon who is responsible for Cybertron's destruction, and has him and his forces retrieve the staff and bring it back to her. To re-energize Cybertron, Quintessa has Cybertron collide with Earth and prepares to activate the staff when Optimus and the Autobots attack. Quintessa tries to kill Optimus and has the audacity to call him a traitor, but is supposedly killed by Bumblebee.

Quintessa however survives and takes on human form where she attempts to manipulate scientists into killing Unicron, which would mean the end of Earth and humanity as a whole.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

Originally her agenda for fighting and destroying Unicron may have been noble or for the benefit of Cybertron, but the eons have driven her mad and made her a selfish control freak, willing to manipulate and use anyone around her. This change in her led to the noble Knights of Iacon betraying her and taking her staff, fearing that her power could mean the end of Cybertron and other life forms.

She wants to revive Cybertron, but no doubt like Kronika from MK 11 is only doing so to satisfy her own selfish intentions or visions of a planet or civilization. Her methods of reviving it are to destroy Earth and uses it energy. While Earth is Unicron, it also however contains life, humans, animals and even the surviving Cybertronians therefore meaning she's willing to destroy an entire planet of life forms, including her own creations, to revive a dead one and no doubt for selfish and ulterior motives.

She calls Optimus one of her finest creations, but will torture and attack him, treating him like a possession and even brainwashes him to trun against his allies and betray his own moral codes. She blames him for Cybertron's destruction despite him fighting to preserve it, completely ignoring Megatron being the one who started the war, either she's too blinded by hate to realize that or simply doesn't care about the excuses of her creations.

She's also quite hypocritical and both allies with Megatron who is the real culprit and calls Optimus a traitor despite him being the one who stayed and defended Cybertron while she left to do whatever ulterior plans she had for Unicron.

Heinousness

Quintessa will manipulate and deceive others around her to get what she wants and while she speaks with a formal and calm tone, is at heart a raving and psychotic sorceress obsessed with the destruction of Unicron. She tortures and brainwashes her own creation and surrogate son, making him turn against his own allies and even at the end of the film attempts to have humanity unwittingly destroy their own planet.

She will again destroy an entire planet of life forms from her own world as well as the natives of said world just to fulfill her selfish goals. And if she was one of the Creators in the ships we see in Age of Extinction, it's also quite possible she was bombing planets and turning the life forms there into resources for them to build their creations with, one such planet being prehistoric Earth where they killed the Dinosaurs, however other worlds they may have bombed could have been intelligent ones like modern Earth.

Final Verdict

I think she counts in my opinion. Sorry if she was also discussed before and not accepted but I wanted to write this again.

[tup] Uberto, Nyarlathotep, Nicholas, Vitalis, Leon, and Quintessa. By the way, I have a rewrite for Akio Ohtori from Revolutionary Girl Utena:

  • Revolutionary Girl Utena: Akio Ohtori, the true identity of "End of the World", runs the Rose Duels that passes his sister, the Rose Bride Anthy, around to the victors, abusive or otherwise. Once Dios, he grew disillusioned with heroism and allowed the Swords of Hate to stab Anthy as The Scapegoat for centuries. As the acting chairman at Ohtori Academy in the present, he seduces several people, including his fiancée's mother, in order to manipulate them. He gains a cold enjoyment out of mentally ripping apart those near him, including his fiancée, whom it's possible he's poisoning to get her out of the way. When Anthy hesitates to continue their weekly tryst with him one night, he angrily rapes her anyway. He seduces Utena and commits statutory rape on her, manipulating her feelings for him to send her into a final confrontation to be sacrificed for his "revolution", where he uses Anthy as a meat shield and orders her to stab Utena in the back literally. While he claims that he wants to get his lost powers as Dios back so that he can free Anthy, in reality, he desires nothing less than the total physical, mental, and sexual domination of everyone he comes to contact with.

Akio doesn't need a rewrite. Particularly, that "total physical, mental, and sexual domination of everyone" little bit is plucked right from Ragyo Kiryuin's writeup, word-for-word. That's not good practice.

Okay, as Scrag and I just watched it...one I'd like to submit for a full eP

What's the work?

Disturbing Behavior is a 1998 horror film that's just a beautiful late-90s representative teen horror. Steve is a teenager who moves to Cradle Bay with his family, after reeling from his elder brother's suicide...Cradle Bay has a very old-fashioned aesthetic to it, and the high school is dominated by the popular 'Blue Ribbon' athletics clique...Steve falls in with the outcasts, only to discover a very dark secret from the local psychological expert, Dr. Edgar Caldicott...

Who is Edgar Caldicott?

A scientist with a god complex out to create 'perfect' teens via brainwashing and implants, Caldicott came to Cradle Bay which was plagued by delinquents and seduced the parents with his spiel about helping kids to realize their 'full' potential, hiding it behind benevolence and good intentions....after convincing the parents to send the kids over for 'training,' Caldicott has them outfitted with a neuro chip to utterly fuck their minds, turning them into 'wholesome' little drones who nevertheless become exclusionary and even violent, destroying who they once were, without an iota of remorse there...the dark side, too? The kids' brains fight the programing. When they encounter stuff like sexuality, they act out violently, frequently raping and murdering when they can't contain themselves. Caldicott? Simply has it all covered up.

When selling it, Caldicott proclaims one of the finest graduates was his own daughter, who grew up, went to Stanford and married a district attorney, and 'bakes a chocolate chip cookie that makes you see God!' Now, Steve is at first weirded out when a delinquent shows up as a wholesome Blue Ribbon...but things kick off when his fellow outcast friend, stoner Gavin Strick is submitted to the program and shows up as a Blue Ribbon, as cruel as the rest of them....Steve begins to get to get suspicious, when he learns the local crazy exterminator is actually a genius psychologist, who Caldicott edged out when he objected to the program, and has a machine that interferes with the chips.

Steve and Rachel, his love interest eluding authorities, end up in an asylum, where Caldicott's irreparably mind broken failures are seen...they end up with a woman who can only say "meet the musical little creatures that hide among the flowers" over and over...and learn she's Caldicott's daughter. A failed experiment. Steve then learns Caldicott has tried to take him into the program, and hen he throws Caldicott's good intentions back in his face by saying how often his creations rape and kill? "To cure cancer, you gotta kill a few white mice." When Steve goes to reminding him of his daughter, Caldicott says he's learned so much since then. "She wasn't that bright to begin with."

Steve goes escape and tries to flee with his sister, Rachel and their friend UV...only to be cornered by the Blue Ribbons when Mr. Newbury, the psychologist, comes to the rescue, triggering the Blue Ribbons to go nuts, after beign mortally wounded by Caldicott shooting at him. Newbury drives off a waterfall with them, shouting a Pink Floyd lyric as he does so...when Caldicott emerges to fight Steve, sneering there will always be small towns and troubled parents...in the ensuing fight, Caldicott ends up hanging to Steve's foot off the cliff, for Steve to kick him in the face, sending Caldicott plummeting to his death.

Heinousness?

I used to think he wasn't bad enough but ye gods...all the death caused by his experiments, the people irreparably mentally destroyed, attempted murder, his own daughter and turning dozens of kids into his brainwashed science experiments?

Mitigating Qualities?

Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist...classic. Caldicott is out to create something in his own image, to fix problems to be lauded for it, and shows no remorse for the failures. His daughter is a very cruel twisting of Even Evil Has Loved Ones and he drops ALL pretense at affability at the end, revealing a vicious sociopath with a god complex.

And the bastard considers pigeons to be beneath him. We like pigeons. Fuck him for that.

Conclusion?

A shockingly easy keeper I had once overlooked.
