Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Eh, after considering things, I lied about a "permanent" abstain. Count me as a [tdown] to Black Hiver.

And I was wondering when League of Legends would get discussed. Assuming there's no problems with Offstage Villainy, [tup] Mordekaiser.

Maybe I'll regret this, but I'll vote [tup] on Black Hiver.

You know, with Snoke, I recall Finn saying, and I don't if this is a spoiler so I'll tag it anyway, that First Order Stormtroopers are taking from families as babies and raised (brainwashed) to be servants of the FO.

Anyone else get major Imortan Joe vibes from this?

Still, as has been said many times, Snoke can't count. His most notable feature is that he is enigmatic, though he has several atrocities and crimes to his name, like building Death Star 3.0, corrupting Ben Solo making him indirectly responsible for Kylo Ren's crimes and encouraging Ben to commit Patricide to make him cross the MEH. He's likely to just be using Ben as well, as is common with Dark Side users. Snoke is high on my watchlist.

I had the same thoughts about Hux as well. That is, I don't feel he does enough off his own back to qualify, which might be the wrong impression to take considering what others have said, but that was my audience reaction. If Tarkin only had A New Hope, with nothing in the EU, he'd still qualify I'd say. Hux is also on my watchlist at a moderate level. Watching his speech was a glorious experience, though.

Ren and Phasma are very low on my watchlist.

[tup] BB-8. Never have I been so sickened by a little ball thing.

Given how much so many want BB-8 labeled a CM (and this coming from someone who's not yet seen TFA and plans to do so his own way), I think there's enough evidence that he should be labeled The Scrappy at the very least.

While BB8 may indeed be evil incarnate, I find cannot bring myself to hate him, instead regarding him with a grudging respect at the way he masterfully conducted his heinous acts, the way he caused the entire galaxy to dance for him like puppets on strings. [tup] to Ranmaru and Mordekaiser.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: abstaining on The Force Awakens villains until their arcs are closed. Hux is the most heinous so far (for the record, I don't think needing Snoke's permission to use Starkiller Base makes the act less heinous, as it was Hux's idea in the first place), but I'm holding to a "wait and see" attitude on him.

And, going way back to page 1992, yeah, ACW, that's exactly the theory I was referring to (sorry, initially assumed that it was a joke).

In addition, having watched all of Sean Connery and George Lazenby's Bond movies, I've come to the conclusion that everyone else already reached: the original Blofeld doesn't qualify (lack of much personal cruelty, values the "fraternity" aspect of SPECTRE, and, while callous and inventive, isn't sadistic). Sidenote, Diamonds are Forever really goes downhill fast, doesn't it? By the third act, I was tempted to just stop watching.

I think BB-8 was preemptively The Scrappy due to it's design. It turned out to be better than most people thought it would, but since jokes were made that it'd turn out to be worse, as in evil, we're going with that in this discussion. wild mass guess

[up][up]Kinda like Spectre, huh? evil grin

My personal opinion of course.

I've seen most Bond films, and I agree on your assessment.

Blofeld in the old days tended to get his killing done quick.

[up]I thought BB-8 was always liked by a large contingent for being a cool practical effect? Then again, SW fandom is so large that even a small fraction hating it would be heard. Or I just wasn't listening hard enough. I was avoiding as much promotion as possible.

Or have I missed the joke myself?

[up] I actually liked Spectre better (played seriously, Darker and Edgier, plus Daniel Craig is my favourite Bond), although I thought having Waltz's character be Blofeld at all was absolutely pointless aside from fanservice. I also found the female lead to be miscast (minor quibble) and underwritten (mostly forgivable in the 60's/70's due to Values Dissonance; downright sad in this day and age). The general sense of Anti-Climax was disappointing as well. It was more So Okay, It's Average to me.

I agree with you about the original Blofeld; mostly business, but with a nice bit of flair that he seemed to enjoy and made him a more distinctive, interesting villain. A bit flashy (shoe knife, electrocution, piranha), but reasonably quick and not insanely sadistic.

And yeah, I think you missed the joke about BB-8 (I honestly liked him).

In Xenoblade Chronicles I seem to recall Dickson saving Dunban's life during the war between Bionis and Mechonis and taking a "bullet" for him...unless we've already covered that.

[up] I wouldn't really use that against him, since Dickson was putting up a facade and pretending to be a good guy at that time.

Plus, back then Dunban was the only guy who could even somewhat wield the Monado and drive back the Mechon, and keeping the one guy who can combat the Mechon alive makes sense from a pragmatic standpoint when you factor in Dickson's true allegiance as one of Zanza's flunkies.

Found this on YMMV.Agents Of SHIELD:

  • Gideon Malick from Season 3 was a HYDRA head who infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. through the World Council. In The Avengers, using his position and taking advantage of Loki’s attack on New York, he convinced the council to launch a nuclear weapon that nearly succeeded in causing the deaths of millions of people. He used his position in the President’s inner circle to stealthily take control of ATCU to take possession of all the In Humans they captured to use them for HYDRA. He had HYDRA agents take the Terrigen infected pills by claiming they were a cure to breed his own In Humans, knowing there was a 50% chance of death. When certain HYDRA agents did turn to stone, he had their bodies hidden like failed experiments. He betrayed Werner von Strucker to Grant Ward both as a power play and to keep him out of the fold. He had Fitz and Simmons abducted, threatened and tortured in order to force them to help reopen the Monolith’s portal to Maveth, his greater plan to allow the destructive creature who inspired the creation of HYDRA to be set free on the world. He sent Ward and several other men in there for It knowing full well that he didn’t expect them to come back. Later on, he takes glee in the fact that It did get off the planet and onto Earth using Ward’s body. It’s hinted that he expected It to take over someone’s body and use it to get off the planet. Obsessively delusional and having an uncompromising God Complex, Malick shows HYDRA’s pure evil at its absolute finest.

Now, Gideon is still alive as of now (it's the seasons half-way point) so he shouldn't be added just yet, but he should be watched just in case because he looks like a likely qualifier.

  • Silent Möbius: Ganossa Maximillian is the true architect of the arrival of the monstrous Lucifer Hawks, having sabotaged his mentor Gigelf Liqueur from creating world peace out of sheer envy. Ganossa directs attacks on innocent people and murders the heroine Katsumi Liqueur's (Gigelf's daughter) boyfriend Roy to turn Katsumi to darkness, while sending her to kill her friends and allies. At the end, when he realizes the world of the Lucifer Hawks, Nemesis, will not grant him what he wishes, Ganossa forcibly assimilates Lucifer Hawks into his body, intending to slam Gaia (Earth) and Nemesis together to wipe out the entire galaxy in both dimensions.
  • 20th Century Boys: Both versions of Friend were absolute monsters of a different variety.
    • The first Friend (Fukubei Hattori), after growing up ignored by his classmates, with their attention often focused on Kenji Endou, developed a craving for attention, and a disproportionate hatred for Kenji. Already wicked as a child, he psychologically abused his so-called "best friends," regularly tried to terrify people with his tricks, and ruined the childhood of one of his classmates, who would later become the second Friend thanks in part to the first Friend's cruelty. Forming the "Friendship Party" as an adult, this Friend began developing a virus that painfully killed anyone it infected, all while silencing anyone who got his way. Unleashing the virus, he framed Kenji and his group for the ensuing 150,000 deaths, took over much of the world as a "hero," and ruled it with an iron fist, sending people to reeducation camps for even minor crimes. His master plan is then revealed: Use a new virus to wipe out 99% of the human race, then rule over the remaining 1% of "true believers." Sociopathic, egomanical, and petty, the first Friend set the bar for wickedness in this manga.
    • The Second Friend (Katsumata) grew up unliked and bullied, in particular by the aforementioned first Friend, and this resulted in a hatred for all humanity. Taking over after the previous Friend's death, he destroys much of human civilization with a new virus and rules what's left even harsher than the previous Friend, spreading tales of "aliens" invading to keep innocents terrified in the process. To further cause chaos, this Friend regularly sends out small doses of vaccines to groups of potential rebels, knowing they will tear themselves apart trying to acquire the antidote. Revealing he plans to destroy all of humanity with an incurable virus, this Friend tries to make Kenji watch as he kills Kenji’s niece, Kanna (Kanna’s mother is Kenji’s sister, while her father is the first Friend), as revenge for a transgression Kenji committed against him as a child, and, when finally defeated, it is revealed he left an Anti-Proton bomb to be detonated by his followers, which will destroy the entire world when activated. Though having the aforementioned Freudian Excuse, the second Friend was ultimately a psychopathic misanthrope whose attempted revenge on humankind was Disproportionate Retribution taken to its highest degree.
  • Wolfsmund: Wolfram, the keeper of the titular fortress, is a handsome, gentle looking man who, despite his Faux Affably Evil manner, is a genuine sadist who has no qualms about hurting women or children. Everyone passing through Sankt (Saint) Gotthard Pass must be inspected by Wolfram, the bailiff of the Wolfsmund ("Wolf’s Maw"), who delights in mentally and physically tormenting his victims. Starting the series by having a young woman executed and her body displayed, Wolfram is responsible for many atrocities, including: torturing a boy (a teenager at most) by burning the soles of his feet, and then forcing him to stand, holding his father on his shoulders to prevent the man from being hanged; forcing a little girl and her mother to undergo a search inside their "hiding place" with tongs to see if they're hiding anything (then keeping the mother as a prisoner); participating in torture ostensibly for information but really for pleasure; and feeding the mother and younger brother of one of the only people to escape his clutches to ravenous wolves for an execution. It is revealed Wolfram led violent raids to kill civilians in the past and spared only two siblings, but only after putting out one eye each; even after they reveal themselves to Wolfram years later, he claims not to remember them. Ostensibly loyal to the Austrian Hapsburg Dukedom, Wolfram admits that his only reason is for the amusement it gives him and his greatest joy in life is to cause others pain, especially after giving them hope first. Finally, when the fortress is attacked, he flees, leaving his men to fight and die against overwhelming odds (and killing one who suggests surrendering).
  • Kung Fu Hustle: Brother Sum is the leader of the Axe Gang, who control most of Shanghai with an iron fist. Sum makes his debut hacking a rival gang leader to death, then telling the man's wife she will be spared. When she turns to leave, he shoots her In the Back. When a martial artist injures a member of his gang, Brother Sum threatens to set a woman and child on fire if he does not reveal himself. His underlings fare little better, as Sum kills them with no hesitation if they irritate or fail him. Upon being humiliated by the Pig Sty Alley residents, Brother Sum hires a pair of Professional Killers to murder the local martial artists, which they do. He then breaks into an asylum and releases the Beast so that he will kill the Landlady and Landlord.
  • Once Upon a Time in China:
    • Jackson, an American dignitary in the first film, is a corrupt sociopath who runs a side business selling the Chinese as slaves, especially selling attractive women as prostitutes. Using the Shaho Gang as his personal army of thugs, Jackson orders an attack on the province's governor and hero Wong Fei-Hung at an opera, having his men fire into the crowd of civilians. When confronted by Fei-Hung at the end, Jackson attempts to use the Governor as a hostage while trying to kill Fei-Hung and his friends.
    • Jackson's corrupt partner, the unnamed leader of the Shaho Gang, participates in the massacre at the opera house and abducts innocents to be sold in Jackson's slave trade. Terrorizing the province and murdering at will, the Shaho Leader also kidnaps Wong Fei-Hung's Love Interest, Aunt 13, and makes clear his intention to rape her. When she fights back, he attempts to drag her to a boiler to burn her face off.
  • The Treasure of Silver Lake: Colonel Brinkley, leader of the bandit group the Tramps, murders several people to steal a treasure map belonging to one. Upon learning the dying man had fled to a homestead, Brinkley takes his men to massacre the region, driven off only by the heroic Apache warrior Winnetou bringing reinforcements. Brinkley later attacks an Indian village and has the women and children gunned down while the men are away, while also forcing one victim's son to lead him to the treasure by threatening the safety of the young man's Love Interest. Brinkley also proceeds to murder his own gang when it appears he has the treasure in his grasp, planning to keep the wealth entirely to himself.
  • Book of Swords: Vilkata, the Dark King, takes the reins of chief villain at the end of the first trilogy. A warlord in possession of the Mindsword, which induces worship of the wielder, Vilkata also deals with demons and sacrifices people to them for his own power, occasionally torturing the unfortunate victims slowly to death. After his initial defeat, Vilkata spends fourteen years wallowing in self pity before he hears of the Mindsword's recovery. Vilkata repays the village that had sheltered him by raping, murdering and possibly partially cannibalizing a young woman before attempting to rebuild his demon army and kill all those in his path, while using the Mindsword to make everyone bow to him.
  • The Tapestry: Astaroth is an ancient and powerful demon (actually a "spore" created by entities called the Starving Gods) who wants the Book of Thoth so he can rule the world with it. While he masks himself as a Well-Intentioned Extremist, he's really a demon supremacist, punishing David Menlo for summoning demons by biting his hand off. His plan for world conquest involves bringing governments around the world close to collapse before descending on Rowan with his army to seize the Book, leveraging the lives of Max's friends to get it. Upon getting it, he uses its power over truenames to expunge all post-medieval human knowledge from existence and memory, killing the vast majority of the human race. He then sets up demons as the Earth's rulers under him, instituting a vicious regime where a single person being literate mandates mass slaughter. When he loses the demons' loyalty, he loses use for them, and after consistently failing to create fully functional life, he flips out when Rowan gears up to stop him and reveals his true motives: he just wants to play God, and cares no more for demons than for humans. To this end, he attempts to summon the Starving Gods in the hopes that they will devour the universe and give him scraps to live out his fantasies with. A narcissistic psychopath caring only about his fantasies of power, Astaroth exhibits unparalleled evil even amongst demons.
  • The Woman: In this novel, which was later made into a film, Chris Cleek, the patriarch of the Cleek family, is an extreme misogynyst and Domestic Abuser. Upon encountering the titular woman in the woods, he kidnaps and imprisons her within a fruit cellar, under the guise of civilizing her. In reality, he intends on dominating her, whether it be through several types of torture, such as using a high pressure power washer to bathe her, or by raping her. It's revealed later on in the novel that Cleek had raped his daughter, Peggy, each night, which culminates in her being pregnant with his child. When Miss Raton, Peggy's teacher, confronts him on this, he knocks her out, and feeds her to his dogs; the scene also reveals that Cleek had a daughter, who suffered from anophthalmia (no eyes), imprisoned in the barn, thus causing her to revert to an animalistic state. Misogynistic and depraved, Cleek didn't care who he had to hurt to make his fantasies a reality.
  • Bosch: David Harris, aka Raynard Waits, is a psychopath who views himself and his crimes as his monument. After getting caught carrying a corpse in his van, he lies to the LAPD about being responsible for the death of Arthur Delacroix. When he is taken to an abandoned factory, he steals Detective Moore's gun and badge before he kills Detective Escobar and a truck driver and escapes to downtown L.A. Waits hides in his adoptive mother's house and goes on to spend the holidays murdering male prostitutes and constructing a catacomb filled with the skulls and bones of his victims. After his mother asks him to refill her medications, Waits smothers her with a pillow before leaving her corpse to rot on her bed. He also psychologically attacks Bosch, from waving to a security camera after brutally killing a cashier to mocking the death of Bosch's mother by murdering a woman, dressing her as a prostitute, and dumping her in a garbage bin. Determined to reach his endgame of Suicide by Cop, Waits forcibly takes a new mother to his catacomb, leaving her abandoned infant with a card reading "Raynard Waits wishes you a 'Happy New Year!'"
  • Castle: Dr. Van Holtzman from season 7's finale "Hollander's Woods" is a masked Serial Killer who has been active for over thirty years. With at least nine victims to his name, Holtzman abducts young woman whom he believes won't be missed, carves crosses into their faces, then cuts their throats. When an eleven-year-old Richard Castle comes across Holtzman disposing the body of one of his victims, Holtzman threatened to kill him if he told anyone what he saw, only sparing him to avoid drawing attention to his other crimes. Years later, when the adult Castle and Detective Kate Beckett investigate another of Holtzman's murders, Holtzman attempts to frame one of his mentally ill patients for the killings. While searching the barnhouse where Holtzman murdered his victims, Castle discovers a scrapbook filled with pictures of Holtzman's victims. When Holtzman arrives, he expresses regret for not having killed Castle as a child, then promises to kill both Castle and Beckett before attacking Castle and trying to slowly cut his throat. Taking pride in his crimes and considering his mask to be his real face, Holtzman is a vicious killer who left an impact on Castle for his entire life, and who stands out in a normally lighthearted series.
  • Human Trafficking: In this miniseries, Sergei Karpovich is the head of an extensive human trafficking ring where women are lured with promises of modeling or meeting Western husbands, before being they are kidnapped, raped and forced to prostitute themselves, and only have a life expectancy of about four years. For other ventures, Karpovich has children kidnapped to serve in child brothels. When one girl escapes due to a guard napping, a furious Karpovich fatally stabs the man in the throat with a pen, and when an ICE raid rescues a number of women, Karpovich has one murdered due to having used her as an accountant. If the women have any families, Karpovich uses their safety as leverage, including children. Representing the evils of human trafficking, Karpvoich's only interest is his own profit.
  • Perfect Assassins: Dr. Samuel Greely, the Big Bad of this Made-for-TV Movie, wants to test the Skinner box on humans. He started his tests on Ben Carroway, and framed Ben's mother as being involved when he's caught. After fleeing to Mexico, he starts an operation where he kidnaps children and locks them in boxes where he electrifies their sole food source and prevents them from forming any emotional attachments, turning them into human attack dogs, right down to the lack of language skills. He then sends then to assassinate people and then kill themselves. After he captures Ben, currently an FBI agent who's investigating an assumption done by his program, he shows him the Training from Hell that his victims go through, laughing as Sensei delivers a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on one of his subjects. When a subject fails, he locks them in the box again, which causes them to have trauma-induced panic attacks.
  • Star Trek: The Original Series:
    • Melakon from season 2’s "Patterns of Force" was a devotee of Nazism, which was introduced to his people by a former Starfleet officer named John Gill in an attempt to soften it. Shunning the attempt to water down Hitler's philosophy, Melakon decided to embrace Hitler's path. He overthrew his mentor and formed a fascist regime on his homeworld Ekos while trying to organize a new holocaust on a neighboring planet called Zeon. Before murdering his mentor, Melakon was denounced by him as nothing more as a self-seeking adventurer, a traitor to his people and all they stood for.
    • Gorgan from season 3's "And the Children Shall Lead" is an evil Energy Being and the last surviving member of a race of marauders who were destroyed by those whom they had victimized. Gorgan sealed himself into a cave and waited for an opportunity to strike. That opportunity came when a small team of Federation scientists arrive on Gorgan's planet to set up a colony. Gorgan took the form of a "friendly angel", manipulating the children into becoming his minions and using his Mind Control powers to drive all the adults to suicide. After the Enterprise comes upon the colony, they take the children aboard the ship. Gorgan convinces the children to use the mind control abilities he has granted them to take over the ship and send it to Marcos 12, a heavily populated Federation colony. When they arrive, Gorgan plans to make all the children of Marcos 12 his minions and kill all the adults. Gorgan forces the crew of the Enterprise to comply with his plan, by exposing them to their worst fears if they don't. After several failed attempts to regain control of the ship, Kirk manages to summon Gorgan and break his hold on the children. Enraged, Gorgan threatens to kill the children if they don't obey him.

    • King Kans is a brutal tyrant and warlord who starkly believes it is his right to take whatever he pleases, at the expense of the kingdom. While prince, Kans devastated villages, brutally killing its inhabitants and forcing others into slavery. When Kans hears of a prophecy that the eighth son of his beloved cousin Devaki will put an end to his reign, he makes it his foremost mission to kill him to end the threat to his rule. He is offered the chance to repent of his evil, but refuses. He revokes his former love for Devaki and imprisons both her and her husband Vasudev on the day of their wedding, and murders their newborn children so that they won't grow up to oppose him , also executing anyone who sympathizes with the two. When Devaki gives birth to Krishna and he is hidden away in a village, Kans summons demons to kill him, even allowing the witch Putna to slaughter infant children by the hundreds just to ensure Krishna's death. After a decade passes, Kans finally summons Krishna to a gladiatorial battle to finish him once and for all. Believing himself superior to all beings, Kans was a monstrous ruler who caused the deaths and suffering of thousands of people.
    • Putna is the first demon summoned by Kans, and one of the most vile. Dealing in the black arts, Putna takes pride in her evil and cruelty. She torments the other demons in the underworld, burning and melting them on a whim, all the while gloating of how she has killed many humans. When summoned by Kans to kill Krishna, Putna is piqued, desiring the deaths of thousands of children. She only agrees to the deal when Kans appeals to her by demanding that every infant boy born in the last ten days be killed. Putna then terrorizes the kingdom, gleefully murdering every infant she sees. When she finds Krishna, she transforms into a beautiful woman and tries to feed him poisoned breast milk. Among a colony of demons, Putna surpasses the others in sheer cruelty, and the other demons are both mesmerized by and terrified of her.
