A robot and a big black marble? They don't even look like they're fighting:

The current picture has nothing to do with the trope, so yeah. The trope seems to be Actually a Doombot, only it's more like: "Actually, the thing you killed was the weaker, physical part of the villain."

The current picture, as you said, shows a purple robot standing next to a giant black/white marble.

Well, technically, it is fighting a shadow (you'd have to watch that episode of NGE for it to make sense) but it's a bad example for the trope.

Yeah, it is an example, but not apparent from the picture.

What happened to the Link vs Shadow Link image?

Dark Link's not really an example, since he's not just a projection of some greater being.

Phantom Ganon, on the other hand, is a very good example. During his death scene, Ganondorf even says that you only defeated his phantom. That death scene doesn't really make a great pic, though, so perhaps a pic of the opening cutscene of the fight, complete with boss subtitles?

Boss subtitles at :36, relevant death scene moment at 2:35.

Belief or disbelief rests with you.

Wait, wait. I got it. The Shadow monsters from Ico. I don't think you get any better than that.

[up]Were they part of some greater being, though?

Because I don't know.

What about Doppleman, Gecko Moria's shadow, from One Piece? Not only is it an example of his trope, but it's also a literal shadow, AND you can see the "main body" in the same frame.

Decent pic, is there one that shows the two more clearly?

I actually really like that pic, although it's a bit poor quality.

It really gets across the "You're only fighting the fake one" feel.

[up][up] That's probably the best shot I can get of all three together in one frame.

[up] For some reason, when posting images in the forums the images get downsized and the quality goes down. If you right click it and click "View Image", you can see that it looks crisper at full size.

I do like the proposed pic. No clue who the people in it are, but the large black shadow looks a lot like the man behind him who seems to be puppeting him.

The One Piece pic is excellent. My only other suggestion would be this God Of War pic maybe with the caption "You thought the first guy was tough? He was just an arm." but the One Piece example is much more obvious.

That's Luffy and Gecko Moria from the Thriller Bark arc in One Piece.

Any objections to Moria?

could a different image be used, of the same thing? the third figure kind of fades into the background.

[up] Like I said above, this is probably the best frame to get all three in; any other would cut out one of them.

[up] then it's a bad picture.

Perhaps the God Of War one or should it go on Cognizant Limbs?

^ You're kidding right? I can't even tell what is so shadowy about that image, or that it's even from Go W.

GabrielGloom Since: Dec, 1969

[up] The trope is not about literally fighting a shadow. It's about fighting something that's only a small part of the real thing.

Well that's a misleading name, but my gripe still stands. I couldn't even tell from the artstyle that it was from God of War.
