Not sure. Serial Numbers Filed Off doesn't have examples, and seems to imply a bit higher quality than this one. I'm not really familiar enough to tell.
My Blog thingThe difference is Serial Numbers Filed Off copies something in everything but name, which means it doesn't want you to think it's that very same thing, and it can have a high quality. POP Station actually does want you to think it's that very same thing down to having a similar name, and cannot have a a high quality.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.^^^Yes. For one, this has nothing to do with ripping off characters or plot.
This doesn't appear to have a lot of misuse, apart from one wick which credits this trope to a knock-off business, rather than an actual product.
I would also much rather prefer Product Knockoff as a new name because Shoddy Knockoff could be taken to refer to anything.

I like Knockoff Product better than Product Knockoff, but yeah, Shoddy Knockoff doesn't to it for me.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.^^Knockoff Product is good.
Again, Shoddy Knockoff is just too broad in my opinion; it could be taken to refer to poor imitations of popular consumer goods (which is what the trope is supposed to be about) or poor imitations of popular works of fiction (which is what something like The Mockbuster already covers). We only need a title that can put the emphasis on consumer goods. Knockoff Product, I think, does that extremely well.
Also Shoddy Knockoff Product.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. If you want a rename, you should at least try to be imaginative. It's not as though this has misuse, especially misuse requiring a precise name. We can still have fun with the name.
How about something like Shaddy Knokoff Product, to go with the misspellings these often have (both in name and in packaging)? Just it should be something not too misspelled, so we can remember it.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Considering there already has been some discussion about renaming this trope almost exactly a year ago
and there is talk about renaming it now, I think a single proposition rename crowner is in order, so I made one here
.
I like the idea of changing the name to something clearer, but I would ideally like to see some evidence that the name might stifle usage of the trope or has caused misuse before I get behind a rename.
"irhgT nm0w tehre might b ea lotof th1nmgs i dont udarstannd, ubt oim ujst goinjg to keepfollowing this pazth i belieove iN !!!!!1 dThe wickage is fairly low. it's currently at 47 wicks and 138 inbounds, but going by the date on the YKTTW, it was made back in December of 2008. That's over 2 years ago.
Well the crowner is still new (and I'm abstaining since I made the page), but assuming it's going to be for a rename, I'll still throw some suggestions ready for an alt name crowner.
How about something blunt, like POS Knockoff? I've actually heard these things called that once or twice (but usually not abbreviated).

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Aw heck, with Product Knockoff, Shoddy Knockoff and Knockoff Product running around my head I ended up with J Alfred Prufrock Shoggoth Knockoff and all hope was lost for me.
At 15 to 2 I'd say we've got consensus for a change. Swapping with a alt-names crowner.

I added Cheap Knockoff, as that's how I've usually referred to these sorts of things. It might be my experience, but I think that is more commonly used to describe them.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster. This fairly straightforward one has a mandate, but it's also drifting off the radar. Shoddy Knockoff Product is in the lead — putting a clock on it.
The clock might have spurred last-minute voting which is good: Shoddy Knockoff Product extended its lead to +12 to +1 nearest. Rename done.
Crown Description:
Vote up for yes, down for no.

POP Station refers to, basically, a crappy copy of something popular, that attempts to con people into buying it based on the fact that it sounds similar to that something. The title refers to an obscure example that has nothing to do with the trope if you hadn't heard of it.
Shoddy Knockoff is a good name for the trope, if you ask me, and so this really should be switched with the redirect.
