This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

~Will B Good: The part where you rogue-launched is correct, as I do not see anything involving Magnificent Bastard in your record.

To make sure you get it: if you do not own a draft, and it reaches three days with the requisite hats, does that give you the right to launch behind the draft sponsor's back?

I have been exchanging messages with alnair20aug93 about this. I can only plead "having a derp moment"— I wanted to edit the draft, wasn't sure how, noticed that it was ready to launch, thought "Weird, that button couldn't possibly active for me— wait, it WAS?!"

Now that I know I won't do it again.

Okay, for some reason at some point in the past few days, I was suspended/banned from being able to edit pages. I was given no notice or warning about this, and only discovered my suspension/ban days after it happened.

I'm assuming one of the reasons is related to the Character page for my fanfic. Specifically, I got so frustrated with so many of the examples on the page being deleted or percent-symboled, to the point that like 60% of the page was invisible or removed, that I deleted the entire page and put a note saying why I deleted it. I figured that this is my own fic that I wrote, and it's a page that I originally created, I could do this. But when I just checked today, I saw that not only had the entire thing been "restored" at some point in the past few days, but even more examples were deleted or percent-symboled, as if mocking me! And when I tried to re-delete it, I discovered that all page editing has been suspended/banned!

1. How/When do I get my ability to edit or add to pages on the site restored? 2. How do I permanently delete my fic's mostly-invisible Character page, so that it can't be restored or reverted?

Okay, I get the point now. But plenty of the examples marked as "zero context" were ones I swore had enough context in them.

1. How can I tell whether or not an example I think is sufficiently contexed actually fits the benchmark?

2. When can I have my editing privileges restored so I can go through that whole page and attempt to give sufficient context to all the marked-as-zero-context examples that they no longer have that mark... and how, then, can I tell if I've put in enough context (as per question 1)?

Most of the examples commented out have nothing beside the trope name, which is an obvious sign of a ZCE. So, let's take an example that does have some words:

The point of example context is to clearly demonstrate, to a reader unfamiliar with the work, how the example meets the trope described. I read this example - what does an average Elvaan do in combat that shows they are both fragile and a speedster? I should not have to click around elsewhere to fill in the gaps. Can you rewrite it to improve the context?

ETA: Your suspension will not be released until we've worked out all the issues here, and feel confident the issues will not recur.

[up]Okay, I'll admit that a technical majority of them need work. I can try to expand on whatever I can, and then completely delete what I can't. (Like, come to think of it, the only story-canon examples on Elvaan are the few scenes with Ishtar (who fights with a tower shield, so while not a glacier, she's not exactly a speedster either), and a Mass Effect-style Codex entry (which IIRC only describes the Elvaan's typical tactical/strategic doctrine as a race, not necessarily as individuals), so that entry will probably end up getting totally cut).

Still, it'd be nice if whenever I put down what I think is enough data to make an example not be zero-context, I'd have a way to know whether it actually fits the criteria, instead of me coming back to check days or weeks later and seeing it gone or percent-symboled (it'd be especially frustrating if this happens to a previously-marked-as-zero-c example after I attempted to expand on it and make it non-zero-c). I'd ask in a forum, but I've been banned in posting in most of this site's forums since a big ugly debacle in mid-2011 (long story short, I'm never participating in a forum-based play-by-post RP ever again, on any site).

That's unfortunate, as we do have a thread dedicated to zero-context examples, but you could always use ATT for a quick poll, i.e. "Does this seem like enough context?"

Since that's your situation, I think what would help quite a bit is you demonstrating here that you understand the line of something having enough context, vs. not. I'll give you some examples. You rewrite them. I'll let you know if they have enough context. This will give you the practice to hopefully feel more confident in your understanding.

As ZCE's is what you set off you so badly, that's gotten the limelight, but there are some other issues as well, which I will give a quick summary of:

It's also of note that some tropes have the same example text listed twice, which is...unlikely to be kosher. A well-written example should apply specifically to that trope, and not generically enough to be applied to multiple tropes.

If/when your editing suspension is released, these matters will need to be addressed as well. But, in due time. We need to talk about them here first and establish your understanding.

Trying examples:

  • Chivalrous Pervert: Tucker frequently flirts with women, makes dirty jokes, and such, but he accepts that "no means no" and, if you take out the lewd comments, actually treats women respectfully (especially if he's afraid of them).
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: At the onset, one of Shinji's driving forces is winning his father's approval. However, he ends up dropping this when Gendo's true callous cruelty comes to light.
  • Back from the Dead: Alicia is "resurrected" in Book 14, when her soul (which has been a sleeping passenger in Fate's body for years) awakens and takes possession of an empty Replica body in order to aid Fate in her battle against Ruin.

I may need more guidance with the "sinkholing" thing.

However, regarding spoilering a character's name: What else am I supposed to do when that character's mere presence in the story is supposed to be a surprise (like Alicia!), and having their name sitting there in plain unspoilered view in the Characters page would clue in non-spoiler-peeking people who aren't in-the-know / at that part of the story yet that "Oh, this character is going to show up; the author's attempt to "surprise" me is now futile! Muahaha!"

(NOTE: When I click "add post", it takes me to a separate "Add Post" page, and thus your post I'm replying to is no longer visible, and since your post was pretty long, with my crappy memory I'm pretty certain I've forgotten some of the other points in it while working on this post...)

(Also, currently attending to other tasks, won't be able to see your reply for about 40-50 minutes)

Those write-ups look much better. This is a challenge if you are intimately involved with a work - you find yourself assuming everyone gets what you mean, but they really don't.

As for spoiler-tagging, check out How to Create a Character Page. You may personally disagree with the matter, but our policy is clearly laid out there:

  • What are the spoilers rules for character pages?
Spoilers on character pages are exactly the same as every other page on the wiki, as covered under Handling Spoilers. However, many of the rules are more immediately relevant or problematic on character pages. So remember:
    1. Never spoiler-tag the trope name in the example list. If something is so much of a spoiler it can't be under a character entry, it can go on the main page instead.
    2. Never spoiler-tag anything above the example line. This includes folder titles, descriptions, and quotes.
    3. If a character is a Walking Spoiler, the folder title still must have their name or a description. Concealing their name by calling the folder "Spoiler Character" is not allowed. If there are too many Walking Spoilers on the page, then all spoiler tags should be removed from the page, and a warning about spoilers placed at the top of the page.
    4. For ongoing works, it is not uncommon to remove all spoiler tags before the current book/season/movie, in order to cut down on clutter. A warning that all spoilers up to the current book/season/movie are unmarked should be placed at the top of the page.

"Sinkholing" is basically potholing gone wrong. There are many different flavors of it - in essence it is using a pothole to misrepresent, linking something irrelevant, inappropriate, or broadly inadvisable.

The specific flavor relevant to you is that using potholes to change the trope name in a list of tropes. For example:

[[ParasolOfPrettiness Umbrella of Joy]]

Note how the page itself is Parasol of Prettiness, but for readers, they would see the trope name as Umbrella Of Joy.

For such spoiler characters, I might just put something at the top of the page saying, "the character folders for Book ## and Book ## contain Walking Spoiler characters; merely opening the folders could spoil you in regards to their presence in the story" or something like that.

I can... try to avoid "sinkholing" - try to whittle down trope-page links per string of words, even with how painful it'll be...

Please let me know when I can edit again. If you check my history, then other than trying to blank that one page, you can see I've been trying not to raise any drama in my additions or alterations to other pages on this site...

A warning would be fine, as long as it doesn't violate the other rules regarding spoilers.

One last matter. We've gone over all sorts of technical issues so far, but the largest concern is your temper.

Many, many tropers have come through here, struggling with understanding policy. That is generally a matter of information, and, while it can take some time, it's simple enough to lay out the rules - here is where you messed up, here is how it should be. Even if people don't get it right away, if they demonstrate a willingness to learn and take criticism, it's fine. Personally, as long as they show they're trying, that goes a long way.

What is more problematic is personal behavior, and your blanking of a page with a snide edit reason said a lot about your perspective.

Throwing a hissy fit is not appropriate. Finding personal smears in standard website clean-up is not appropriate. Lashing out at others in edits is not appropriate. I can release your suspension for editing mistakes quick enough, but if you comport yourself with this attitude again, you are coming right back here, and this talk will go very differently.

Understood?

Hello. It appears that I have been banned for asking other troopers to do things for me, requesting that Family Unfriendly remains a YMMV trope, and serial tweaking. The reasons why I have been doing this include the fact that I have been so busy with school that I have been asking other people to do things for me since I am afraid that I might make a mistake. I did not mean to sound commanding. I was just asking a large amount of tropers to complete some favors for me since I would not be available. I am also a huge fan of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, so I have massive OCD and desire to make the pages associated with the series as perfect as possible whenever I can. However, I kind of get carried away and rush through it as a result of wanting to finish it fast. As for my recommendation for the Family Unfriendly trope remaining on YMMV pages, I am just used to seeing that trope on YMMV pages and feel uneasy about the change. I really enjoy editing on TV Tropes and I am just trying my best to have the pages that I usually edit organized however I can since I have become so occupied with things that prevent from editing. Now, it is summer vacation, so I will not ask for anymore favors since I will be available and capable of editing/cleaning up articles without requesting any assistance, deferring from being a serial tweaker, and backing up my claims on forums. Also, I am not Manny 20444. He and I are just friends in real life and he was the one who introduced me to this site, so he does not deserve to suffer for my mistakes. I apologize for my recent behavior and promise not to cause any difficulties in the future.

Hello. I can hazard a guess as to why I was suspended- my posts about Daenerys/Sansa- and would like to discuss this. I understand that I may be coming across as rude in my edit reasons, and am trying to work on this, but do not understand what is wrong with my edits otherwise.

~SwimToTheMoon, simply put - you may put an item up for discussion, but that does very little if you edit-war simultaneously. It implicitly takes the stance that your position is the correct one.

Look, you were doing fine for a few years, so I'm perfectly alright thinking this is just a minor bump in the road, but you can't have it both ways. Unless you are making an edit to ensure compliance with hard wiki policy, you have to talk things out in full before putting your edit back and making an edit war. Are we good?

~Yellow20, I will give you a choice, since I've seen you swing across the grammar spectrum here.

  • You can be sent to the Get Help with English thread to request grammar assistance on your requested edits, and for edits to be made on your behalf by others. If you have little-to-no corrections given, you can come here and request to have your wiki suspension released, or;

  • You can have your wiki suspension released immediately. If you choose this, you are held responsible for all of your grammar, so if we find that you are adding errors across the wiki again, you will likely be re-suspended. Note that you can choose to use the Get Help with English thread voluntarily.

The first choice is a little more security, though you'll have to demonstrate patience; the second choice puts a lot more responsibility on you.

~TeamTony, your edit reasons are undoubtedly rude. It's also become apparent, through multiple, separate tropers' reports, that you have a serious wonk about Game of Thrones. We genuinely, 100% do not care about the fandom discourse. Examples should not be written to argue your personal slant on the work.
