This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

However, do note that this was your third suspension. One more and you're out of here.

~Eternityof Spirits: If someone disputes your edit, you need to take it to discussion. No exceptions. Was that lesson lost along the way?

~prgiordano

You were edit warring over the quote in Avengers: Endgame. If you have page quote issues, take it to our dedicated thread for page quotes and discuss it there.

~futuremoviewriter

Not just complaining threads, but also threads that we feel are completely pointless and the persistent bumping of said pointless threads.

~GrecoRomanGuy

It appears you have natter and indentation issues.

~Rom Watt

You were given notifiers on Zero Context Examples yet you kept adding them.

~Draco Alpha

You were covering trope name with spoiler tags which violates our spoiler policy. In addition, we frown upon speculative troping, especially on unreleased works.

Wretched Dog 2, I will see about your case with the rest of the staff. Please be patient. Thanks!

With the exception of the Cleanup threads, I’m fairly new to the forums. I admit I could have read the rules more carefully to know what was appropriate and what was not. Also, I really wanted responses and got too eager as a result. So yeah, I’ll be more selective about topics in the future from now on and not bump my own threads either (or any one else’s just to be safe). I’m sorry for the trouble.

If you are unable to understand what makes a quality forum topic, or how to post productively in forum topics, then we'll just leave that permission turned off for you.

That was for being off topic though. This was wrong place and not the right tone.

I noticed the Killmonger and Katrina Spellman ones weren't locked it seems because they were fun hypotheticals and not about criticism or disapproval of the work. They were done in fun while I can understand that the others had a harshness in tone that wasn't considered civil. The first topic I'd ever started on here was the Random Thoughts: Complete Monster thread back in late June and before that, I'd only ever posted on the cleanup threads for years.

The threads that were locked came off as: "Let's talk shit about the Monster Cleanup thread" (not what I intended), "Here's a WMG I wrote that I want people to talk to me about" (admittedly self-indulgent), "That couple sucks and this one would be better" (yeah, it's pretty bitter) and "They're stupid not to make that damn sequel" (wasn't the focus or question I posed, but still too critical either way).

I created hostility where it wasn't allowed and I understand that now. I came off as selfish and arrogant and that was not my intention. Also, bumping my topics was a means of trying to force interest when I really should have just left it alone. Bumping was like screaming "Notice me!" to everyone on Yack Fest and it was really inappropriate and unwelcomed. I didn't intend to come off as unreasonable or rude, I just got too over eager and thought that Yack Fest was the right place to try to express it. I'm sorry on both accounts. Please don't ban me.

EDIT: If and when I create threads in the future, I'll be very selective about the topics from now on. I'll ask others advice and try to refer to the rules too.

The more I think about it, this is definitely a fair critique. I’ve messed up on indentations (and then forgotten to fix them), and I have had a few edits removed in the past for being too conversational/natter.

I’ll go brush up on the rules (because I’d like the chance to edit again!), but if my editing privileges are not restored I accept that.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I was suspended for a reason that was not entirely my fault. In a discussion me and another troper did not agree with each other’s arguments. After me and another troper resolved the discussion(on pretty good terms), the previous mentioned troper decided to call a mod anyway.

Keep in mind the discussion was resolved and I even made edits according to the what was agreed. The troper who reported me made the argument I was being obtuse, when I just didn’t agree with his argument. He was just as equally opposed to mine, so I was not the only one.

Is there a way we can resolve this so I can go back to editing, because I feel this is unnecessary or at least I shouldn’t be the the only one.

I posted a request for recommendation on Zero no Tsukaima fanfics in it's thread, it's been thumped as "off topic". Then some guy with a stick up his ass told me not to post my requests so much(I only did about 5 in different threads with different requests) as it's bad etiquete and there are "better ways". I asked what better ways? This is his reply:

It's not good etiquette, and a mod-able offense. The reason I didn't call for the mods was because I suspected you didn't know, so I wanted to tell you straight up.

And another thing? You have to deal with these threads having low traffic. Not every has an interest in fanfiction. I don't care one ass about Familiar of Zero, I"m only here because it's the most recent post you made.

I replied to mind his own business if he has nothing to contribute and that I didn't spam. I got thumped as off topic instead of a guy who said I don't care one ass about Familiar of Zero in it's thread lol, and suspended.

Real nice mods you have there mates.

I think I got suspended for making edits in this barren Character page for Ar Nosurge, although I'm not sure since I can't edit anything even outside that trope page. The only complaint I had was some grammatical errors, which I tried to avoid by using grammar checks to make sure I what I wrote was correct. May I ask for my suspense to be lifted, since I can't even edit other pages, who had not express any warning or concern with my edits before. Also, I wasn't actually warned about being suspended either.

EDIT: It seems that my edits weren't at the quality of the TV trope page. I was made aware a few weeks ago so I tried to use a grammar check website to make sure none of mt edits have grammatical errors, which may not be the most reliable way to handle the edits. I was given a link, but when I clicked on it, I was taken to an error page and I had no idea where it was suppose to take me. I think it was the Get Help With English Here forum because another person informed me of just now. If it may help, I wouldn't mind sending my edits to that forum to see if they were acceptable or not, and if they aren't I'm willing to take advice and improve in my own writing.

The last time I was was here was quickly resolved as a misunderstanding.

The current also seems to be a case of misunderstanding. The discussion in question was over. Though I didn’t agree, I respected the outcome and even made the appropriate edits, as the other main troper involved was unavailable. The mentioned troper and I, resolved things pretty well, we even messaged to resolve the final edits. The discussion in question was was also not particularly hostile, though we clearly didn’t agree.

The issue came in form of the the third troper who reported me after the discussion was resolved and edits were made. I actually have no idea what I did to make them angry except I didn’t agree with them, which I let them know. I didn’t really get mad until they posted on the Discussion (again after it was over), that they notified a Mod I was not agreeing to the discussion(which was untrue). However even then I didn’t get hostile I simply asked why they brought a mod to a situation that was resolved.

So with all that layed out I’m not sure what I did. I had a discussion. Resolved the discussion. Made the proper edits according to said discussion. So I’m not sure this was a “spat” at all. Like I said this seems like a misunderstanding.

I suppose I could try to go at discussions softer (admittedly my text sometimes seems more sarcastic than I mean it to), but like I noted the troper who reported me is just as guilty there.

All that said i understand your position and I’m always trying to improve.

In addition to the other thoughts I had a few days ago on here, when I rejoined the Monsters Cleanup thread after my last suspension, I only got one complaint and it didn’t get me thumped again. I have not been thumped on there since before my suspension.

I have done a lot better with being more frugal about what I post there. As I was new to creating my own topics, I didn’t completely understand what was appropriate and what wasn’t given how things here’s are done very differently than the IMDb message boards (which have been gone for over two years now because the criteria wasn’t like it is here).

I should have known better, but I didn’t and I’m sorry about that. It’s on me to make sure that topics that suggest ideas, but don’t criticize or have negative tones to them, are what I stick to in the future.

OK, doing a bit of catch-up.

~EternityofSpirits, I'd like this to be very clearly understood. Your two suspensions have been for the same thing, edit-warring, which we have well-established rules for. We also discussed these rules with you on your first suspension, but you relapsed and edit-warred again. If we are releasing you, and you edit war a third time, you will not have any opportunity to have editing privileges restored. The suspension will be permanent.

Are we clear?

~GrecoRomanGuy, before we release your suspension (and we do appreciate you reading the rules), I want to make sure you've ingested the indentation guidelines. Please re-format these examples to be correctly indented:

  • Catchphrase: "Angel's friends! Together forever!"
    • During transformation sequences the angels say: "To guard and protect!"
    • And the devils: "To curse and confuse!"

~RomWatt, you need to describe how an example fits the trope. If you cannot provide enough information for a non-reader/watcher to understand how it fits the trope, it needs more context. Let's look at one of your examples:

  • Large Ham: Several of the characters played by Links' brothers, David and Jeremy, during the comedy skits.

What about those characters makes them a ham? What do they do? How do they act? What do they say?

~futuremoviewriter, let me put it this way. Say we are in a kitchen, with lots of rules posted about how to work in the kitchen safely, and you keep ignoring the huge one that says "wash your hands!"

We finally get you to wash your hands, except now you're doing things like washing your hands, and then picking your nose. Or washing your hands, and then touching your hair. You are technically following the poster, but you are subverting the whole point of it.

This is the impression we get when watching how you operate in the forums. It took a long time to get you to understand what off-topic constitutes in the Complete Monster clean-up thread. Then, you start a forum thread that is about that forum thread, ostensibly to host said off-topic posts you could no longer make there. We lock that one. Now, you make forum threads that are both complaining and pointless, and then bump them. All of those things you would know not to do, if you familiarized yourself with the rules.

I'll ask others advice and try to refer to the rules too.

You should have already been referring to the rules, especially considering the forum suspension we just lifted off of you.

Do you understand now why we are inclined to just leave your forum privileges permanently suspended? It doesn't seem like you are capable of following either the letter or spirit of our rules, regardless of intention.

I was ignorant and arrogant to think that I knew the rules without reading them (that they went without saying). Things here are different and while they are in a way that require due diligence in understanding what is acceptable and what isn't, they're for the better. That is something I should have been more thoughtful about. The rules help make this one of the most welcoming places to have online discussions because there is never any harsh judgment. I don't know many other sites like this if at all.

I'm at your mercy. I feel like I have a lot to contribute and would like to continue to do so. I'd be grateful to have those privileges reinstated. I'm not just trying to tell you guys what you want to hear and I'm so afraid of getting another chance and screwing up again because that means you'll have no more faith in me that I can learn and adjust. I don't want to let you guys down again. I let myself down again if I do. I get permanently banned from the forums, it means that there are people I let down forever. There are people who had no choice but to write me off because I would have proved I could do nothing but let them down. I don't want to let you guys or anyone else down. This is something I want to be depended on for. This is important to me because it's part of my passion. It's part of what I love. This is something I want to be able to come back from. I don't want to lose this.

Okay I get it. The problem with the example you cited is that these characters in question either only appeared once or twice in the entire series, or appear at somewhat irregular intervals through several different episodes, both in the Non Mais T'as Vu Ce Que T'écoutes and the 50/50 series, that I can't necessarily keep track of, or at least can't remember precisely which episode they appeared in, and there's quite enough of them to make a list.

For instance, there's David who played a Drill Sergeant Nasty in one episode, a harsh judge in another episode where he tries to maintain order in his court, and a parody of a refined chef with a French southern accent who appeared in another, all of them were speaking loudly at some point.

Jeremy regularly plays as the Professor Van Glückenspiel (though I think he appears more often in the 50/50 series), whose role is to explain tropes like Recursive Canon, Deus ex Machina or dichotomy, and who speaks with a nasal voice and pretty much acts like an eccentric professor, and he plays another character who tries to sculpt a stone with ink (that's in relation to the lyrics of a song LinksTheSun was reviewing), and Jeremy's character nearly becomes mad and yells that it doesn't work.

David and Jeremy also played together as quite psychopathic, stereotypical Germans with an exaggerated accent and who look like Nazis (they're actually Jewish). These are the only examples I can think of right now.

I also got this non-context problem with Kevin from Hobo Bros adoring Isabelle from Animal Crossing, because I didn't know what trope could appropriately describe it.
