This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't spam the thread about your appeal, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

I don't know why I was suspended, but I would like to edit again. Namely, I'll stick to Paint The Hero Black for now.

Sci Fi Slasher: You need to work on your etiquette in OTC. We've seen complaints about strawmanning, ranting at people and telling them to go away, and generally being confrontational and personal. It is intolerable by the forum standards.

Pardon me if I sound like an asshole, but nobody is calling out people like Charles (who has engaged in clear gentilesplaining in regards to Jewish people/Judaism) and Kazuya (who seemingly uses every opportunity they have to whine about any vaguely left-wing idea and demands that this site stop being a "left-wing echo-chamber"). Both of these members have also shown atheophobic tendencies.

You might have received complaints saying that I was "stawmanning" and "telling people to go away," but if i'm going to be honest, I will need some actual, concrete evidence that I was engaging in such practices, rather than others getting pissed at my trying to call them out.

Also, along with OTC, I've noticed that I can no longer access my messages. Why is that? I have not said anything inflammatory or hostile in the P Ms.

Hey.

Just found out I'm suspended from editing any page related to Bojack Horseman (actually, any sort of editing in TV Tropes). Having read the article, I admit I have had some issues in the past (grammar errors, occasionally creating new sub-pages and then redirecting them because they were redundant, etc.) Not all of these infractions are recent; some of the most blatant happened a couple of years ago.

From time to time, I check on my edits and correct them (as well as others'), more specific in the Bojack Horseman Character Pages. That's not to say I don't make mistakes at all. Could have avoided paragraphs filled with word cruft if I had kept to the most strictly relevant information for each listed trope. Also, I could have double checked to fix more of my grammar errors. Some of the spelling still eludes me, partly because of my clumsy writing when it comes to finishing it before the lock expires. I haven't been as active here as I used to be, which may have led to negligence regarding a better contribution standard. Also, I've sent a couple of messages twice during situations of stress when one should suffice (never outright insulted anyone, more of a general worrisome tone). Mostly, I keep to myself, since I rarely message anyone and rarely anyone messages me. Vicious cycle (seldomly anyone answers unless it's a moderator, so I just gave up).

Honestly, yesterday I could still edit. This seems kind of surreal. This is not a claim against the suspension. I await the verdict, hoping it's fair and square. What else can I do other than try to better myself and the stuff I do?

Still, if there's still the chance to continue being part of the site and writing about all that media encompasses in a way that respects the guidelines of TV Tropes, I'll be grateful for the second chance.

Thanks, Doug Devils Mutt

~MarvelFan2018, it's a bit curious, because it appears that you responded to a PM in much the same way you've appealed here, stating you concede the example does not fit Moral Event Horizon...but then restored the entry in an Edit War regardless.

I know. That was quite stupid of me. I'll maybe add a highlight by saying Marilyn Batson does not belong in the Moral Event Horizon trope, and why she does not belong there. That way, I will not get tempted into bringing it back up.

Can you clarify why you immediately walked back on what you said over PM? Otherwise, we don't have great cause to believe you at your word here.

It was because since I was reconsidering putting it on there, except the Downplayed Trope part. I tended to over-exaggerate the situation and that's why I added it back after I argued to leave it be. I know that was quite hypocritical of me. I sincerely promise not to re-add it next time.

Hello, I have been suspended from the Launch Pad and I do not know why. Could you please clarify why this has happened? I did not think I was doing anything wrong and whatever it is I will try to fix it as best as I can. I would really like to continue editing if you lift the suspension and I will try to be more careful next time.

Hi, this is Elevator Noise here. I recently got blocked for making one lousy edit on the "sexy secretary" article. Well, technically two, the other being on the "gender-inverted trope" article, but it's basically the same edit. So... where do we go from here?

Also, I keep going to read the message I just received, but it keeps saying I'm forbidden from viewing it. So how do I go about reading it, then?

I notice I got suspend today and I know why because of my grammars. I''m really sorry about my English grammars and I thought I improve with English after I took an English class for the pass two semesters, but I realizes I still need help to improve to make it better. I will like to edit again and I can try to uses the program, Grammarly or the English correction discussion whether other tropes correct people's words before posting them.

Hey there. I know I’ve said this a bunch of times, but I am so sorry for adding a bunch of unnecessary edits to the SHAZAM! (2019) page. I was over-exaggerating and was contradictory in my editing process. I know I brought back Marilyn Batson's Moral Event Horizon bullet after I agreed why she does not belong on that slide. I just took the reason for the deletion literally and I wasn’t thinking. I swear that I will not put her back on that trope again. I understand that what she did was certainly a thoughtless choice regardless of her background, but she’s clearly not beyond redemption. Do you think I helped contribute to her main page on the character sheet? If not, I completely understand. I know I have been terminated twice before — and I completely understand why — but this time, I promise not to make any more mistakes like that. If I do this again, you will have every right to terminate me for my unnecessary edits and I won’t bother this site anymore. Can you please rid me of my suspension soon?

~Azura Blu 22: You stopped using the Help with English topic about a year ago, despite being released on your own recognizance. Since you have continued to demonstrate bad grammar, including in that appeal post just now, I see no value in letting you edit again. Your suspension is permanent.

~Elevator Noise 19: We take a very dim view of people editing the wiki to erase examples of things they don't like. If you're one of those special snowflakes who hates Ghostbusters (2016) for starring women, then we aren't going to get along and you might as well leave now. You are allowed to post here (and here only) so you can have one chance to explain yourself. Make it good.

~ykSora55: If you are going to participate in Trope Launch Pad, you need to follow all the rules. That means that if you launch a trope, you must crosswick it, index it, and do all the other things to make it complete. You have been notified about this and still haven't done it properly.

Most of our problems with TLP can be linked directly to the people participating. We'll ban as many as we need to fix the culture. So, are you going to do things correctly or not?

~Doug Devils Mutt: It seems like you do understand the issues that led you here, specifically Word Cruft and grammar. This then raises the question: what are you going to do about it? Will you make use of resources, including our Help with English topic, to improve your writing? Will you avoid unnecessary verbal tics?

If we release your suspension, you get exactly one chance to show us you can do better.

~Sci Fi Slasher: We talked over your suspension a little while ago, and it seems like some things need clarifying.

  1. We aren't seeking to be a left-wing echo chamber. We permit different points of view as long as the discussions are kept civil.
  2. Merely expressing a political opinion that you find offensive or upsetting does not justify going off on people. If you can't maintain a polite argument, then you shouldn't participate in the conversation.
  3. We are not going to thump or ban people for having opinions unless they express them in the form of trolling or hate speech, if they advocate illegal acts, or if they become so disruptive that we can't maintain civility.

You and you alone are responsible for your own conduct, no matter what provocations you perceive.

I'm checking to see if the other moderators have a collective opinion about whether you need to stay banned or if you can possibly be trusted to resume posting. The PM ban is a precaution against further bad behavior.

Okay, I will read the rules more carefully next time. I'm still kinda new at this so I have not figured out completely everything yet. Fighteer

I’ve pondered options and this is a possible solution:

Before adding any contribution to the site, all of my write-ups will be drafted in my computer’s Pages. I am aware there are places in TV Tropes where you can write drafts of your edits; the Sandbox exists for that reason, last I heard. However, I’m not really familiar with that area and until I become more aware of the rules, I’d rather not test my luck.

Now, once the drafts are finished, I’ll read them as many times as necessary. Does this paragraph work? Should this part remain or be erased? How many times do I repeat the same words and which are those? Could the same point be made with shorter sentences?

Once polished, the tentative edits will be posted first in Help with English to get a second opinion. See if anyone has something to add, if I missed something. After all, everyone has their own bias. Once the second revision is done, it’ll be added to the respective page/sub-page.

It’s not infallible but it will keep any major errors in grammar, syntax and relevance out of the way. Plus, it will help me reinforce my grasp of English and ensure that when (and if) I get the chance to do edits without any mistakes of notice, you won’t have to worry about me continuing to tread the same path over and over again.

Said in a less pompous way: I write any kind of trope examples I see missing first as a draft to later check if there are any errors. Once it's done, I’ll check with the guys at Help with English to see if it’s correct and ready to be added. This so I don’t end up here again and you won’t have to deal with me again other than sending you a PM for any doubts.

Does this sound like a reasonable course of action?
