This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't spam the thread about your appeal, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Please give me my editing privileges back. I promise that the vandalism that came from my account was not my doing and it will not happen again.

How should I respond when I can’t even view my own messages? I’ve got four now.

There are not two messages before I got suspended. I only received one message when I was already suspended. I keep waiting for the troper to reply, but when I received one, I already got suspended.

So, the moderator Fighteer told me four days ago that he accepted my apology and would release my suspension soon. However, that has not happened yet. Is this normal?

Okay, it's been a while since I last said anything about the suspension here. Now that it has been a week, I was wondering what else is needed to lift the ban.

Please rescind my ban. The only thing I did to deserve a suspension was send an angry message to someone; Mad_0Crow (I'm not sure how they spell their name, as I don't know them personally, hadn't spoken to them in months before yesterday, and can't look it up in my messages) told me not to edit The Arkn Mythos YMMV page (which contains a number of errors) without permission. I'm certain I asked for permission back in November; however, they insisted I didn't and needed permission to edit. After posting to the forum asking for permission, I sent Crow a message telling them to "get off my ass" (I think? It was very late at night; I can't remember it clearly, and I can't look at my messages to verify what was said). I was asleep when the ban went into effect, and I didn't have a chance to view (or respond to) the message informing me of my ban. Regardless, I regret my choice of words. I shouldn't have taken out my anger on another user.

I ask again: please rescind my ban and return my editing (and all other) privileges I have been a devoted user of this site since at least 2010, and this is my first offense.

~Nerdarchives: And when at least three days have passed and it has the minimum hats for launch. Also, the launcher should participate in the discussion. Since you appear to understand, I'll remove your suspension.

~voidgod: Same with you. Trope Launch Pad has rules and you need to follow them, not just for the sake of etiquette but because we want quality tropes to come out of there. I'll remove your suspension.

~Emerald141: I want to take a moment to make sure that you (and everyone else reading this) are clear about something. Your statement, "Please do not trivialize my emotions or the emotions of everyone else who was wounded by the epilogues," is hyperbolic and absurd. Obviously, we're all fans of things, and fans tend to feel strongly about the things they like, but that doesn't mean that you can take a dump all over a work because it hurt your feelings, nor that other editors should be required to let that stand.

Please exercise some taste and judgment, and consider that we aren't looking to pick fights. Okay?

~Frag Wall: Your hurt feelings aside, there's never a call for the kind of rudeness and impatience you displayed.

While it would have been courteous to message you before cutting the article(s) you made, it is our explicit policy that all work articles must meet minimum standards of completeness. "Leave it for later" doesn't work on a wiki, where every article is public immediately upon creation. These standards include:

  • The description must have all required elements: title, author, genre, medium, date of publication, brief summary of the work.
  • There must be at least three trope examples with adequate context.
  • The article must be indexed.
  • The article must be crosswicked.

If you want to draft up an article for later publication, you have several choices. You can use the Sandbox namespace, you can use Trope Launch Pad, you can use your personal to-do list, or you can work offline and paste in the finished work.

Before we proceed, I would like you to study Zero-Context Example and explain what it means. I would also like you to acknowledge that if we release your suspension and you engage in that kind of rudeness again, your next suspension will be permanent.

More to come.

~Bixen: It appears that we overlooked your previous reply. I'll release your suspension; please follow TLP Guidelines in the future.

~JadeEyes1: I've just spent a bit of time reviewing your PM history and the other context surrounding your suspension, and I have to say, you don't seem to be very good at following our rules.

The Complete Monster trope has very specific rules for how it is to be used on the wiki. No examples, nor changes to examples, are permitted anywhere without being screened in the forum thread. This includes "rewrites", which get batched and submitted to the Locked Pages topic by ACW.

Threatening to block someone who asks you to stop editing those examples on your own is straight up "being a dick", and can easily escalate to a permanent ban. This isn't a trivial matter. Understood?

So what should I do now? I have studied the Zero Context article earlier today and I understand the rules now. I already learned that I shouldn’t be rude but instead reply solemnly. I learned my lesson.

Fighteer Understood. In my haste to get approval for the initial entries, I must have overlooked the rule about editing examples. It won't happen in the future.

Also, I keep getting messages in my inbox; again, I cannot view or respond to them, so if it's related to my ban, I have no idea what's being said.

Fighteer: Understood. TV Tropes is not a place for Complaining About Shows You Don't Like. If I take such strong issue with a work in the future, I'll vent about it privately or on designated forums, instead of editing a wiki in a manner bound to spark conflict.

It's been two weeks since the decision was reached to suspend me from the Projects forums, which was the timeframe set for re-evaluating my case. I have a few points I would like to bring up. In a previous post, I stated:

What's speculative is assuming that because it applies to the trailer, it must also apply to the work. That is my understanding of the policy as it has been handed down, and it appears to be shared by several other people in that thread, including moderators. If that understanding is incorrect or incomplete, please let me know.

Nombretomado later characterized this as a "hardline stance... that [is] not in keeping with our decision." I would therefore like to repeat my request for clarification. What is it that I'm not understanding about the policy?

Nombretomado also said that,

virtually no unreleased works meet... your individually set standards.

This is demonstrably untrue. I personally cleaned up the Bayonetta 3, Toy Story 4, Captain Marvel (2019), and Avengers: Endgame pages (the latter two before the release of those films), and all had enough valid examples (in my estimation, based on the policies set forth by the mods) to evade the cutlist.

I'm confused. The only thing I can think of is the narm entry, but how is that an edit war? Someone made an entry, someone else removed it for not fitting the trope definition, then I made another entry that did fit the trope definition. How can you be edit warring with only one entry?

Sci Fi Slasher: You need to work on your etiquette in OTC. We've seen complaints about strawmanning, ranting at people and telling them to go away, and generally being confrontational and personal. It is intolerable by the forum standards.
