This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

~pingastroper: There Is No Such Thing as Notability. Any work by any creator can get a wiki article, as long as it contains enough narrative to write trope examples for, and as long as it doesn't run afoul of our content policy. However, we do not permit articles to be made for the primary purpose of advertising a work. We aren't here to help anyone get views or sell copies. Also, you have to be willing to put in the effort. Don't ask other people to make articles for you.

Acknowledge and I'll release your suspension.

~avada: It can take a few days to resolve cases, as noted in the pinned post, since we aren't always online nor have the time to adjudicate fairly. For myself, I like to be able to spend the time and attention that each troper deserves, and I can't always do that. The resolution, however, depends more on you than on us: primarily, whether we feel that you understand the issue and are willing to correct it.

In your case, what I've seen is a lot of excuses but not really any admission of your own fault. Please review the Conversation in the Main Page and Edit War policies and explain how your conduct violated both.

I'd like to think that I didn't do anything wrong in regards to The Sopranos, all I did was say that the show didn't involve anything supernatural.

What I wrote in regards to my edits for Harry Potter, I sincerely regret and apologize for, it was rather irresponsible of me and it sounded like I was lashing out rather that discussing things rationally.

In regards to both instances, I ask for forgiveness. I was just following my gut on what I thought should be altered.

Hi All,

I was suspended on aggressive behavior towards another user that I didn't get along with. This is the first time I've been suspended, and really, I acknowledge it was my fault for letting my anger get the better of me. I blocked the other user so as I'm not provoked again. Thanks.

Very well. I know exactly why I'm here.

So I got into an argument with Fighteer in the World of Warcraft forum because I happen to dare feel a Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy and calling him out when he engaged in what others said to be 'e-jerking'. I understand that it might have been rude and I could have worded it better... but somewhere along the way, I just feel that I had to stop that, I just feel that such thing is not exactly how a mod should behave. And... well, here I am.

If that is truly uncalled for, I apologize and... should I be given another chance (though maybe I doubt it), I will avoid the hell out of the WoW topic or any Blizzard games topics in that matter. I did ask about making a topic in Yack Fest as a compensation but that seemed to fall into deaf ears.

I await your judgment. I take any decisions with grace.

Thank you for your response. Is there somewhere I can read up on what is appropriate for YMMV? Is it more the alternative opinions of a community that is appropriate for YMMV pages?

Also, is it best to ask on Discussion before adding or removing from YMMV pages?

I'm not sure if there is a specific entry that caused me to be banned or general behaviour, so if there is any further advice for avoiding this in the future I would appreciate any help.

Also, is the way to get un-banned through discussion or a time limit penalty?

Thanks again for the response and apologies for the slow reply.

I've read the editing warring admin article and it says adding or removing something that was previously added or removed counts as edit warring, which I didn't know (I'd assumed it was a continuous thing). So in future I should check the history of the article before making edits?

Okay, I am requesting my right to edit again after what was an unfortunate disagreement had earlier.

I butted heads with someone earlier over them editing something I wrote that they felt was not an appropriate example of the trope in question. I was not happy about it, I admit I had a poor attitude about it even though I said I would not repeat said edit any further during our convo. I apologize for my poor conduct and would like to return to business as usual while also trying not to use illegitimate examples of tropes I add to these pages, which I normally try not to do.

I am on TV Tropes every day and I love to write and to edit. I spend countless hours on here and want to continue helping the place grow. I understand that my earlier attitude was poor, and will take responsibility for it. I should've been more civil in expressing my disagreement and in dropping the issue. I will take greater pains to avoid any repeats of this from now on. And if I should ever make the mistake of misapplying tropes on any page, I will not become belligerent again if confronted. I have no desire to argue with anyone, and will refrain from doing so from now on. My apologies to those I offended.

I just found out I got suspended from editing. I am sorry for whatever mistakes I have made that may have caused other tropers work or problems. I don't know what the reason is why I got suspended. Could it be because I am unable to understand how "*" works and when to add two or three of those. If so can you explain it to me clearly, because I'm unable to understand the current explanation of how it works.

I really want to edit again, because I want to correct some mistakes on some pages, make them more orderly or add new content to them. I really want to know what I did wrong so that I can edit again. I also really love Tv Tropes and visit this site every day.

Hello, I had my editing privileges suspended and I don’t understand why. I know you have you reasons for suspending me and I apologize for whatever I did wrong, but I was not given a reason as to my suspension. I would appreciate having those privileges back and if I’m told why I was suspended in the first place I promise I will change my behavior to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

Thank you.

A few moments after I posted here, Septimus Heap contacted me via PM, I told him my problems without any hostile and he said somewhere along the line, "OK, then post your appeal here." Well, in that case, I present my case thoroughly after having almost 24 hours to self-reflect.

Really really long, so I will use folders.

    The cause of suspension
I have a really big distaste on the current direction of World of Warcraft, thinking that they have strayed away from their original groundbreaking concepts of making Orcs/Horde look more cultured and honorable, by giving them a lot of Villain Ball treatment and the Alliance being the goody two shoes that will always be excused or justified whenever they do something bad. I saw this as an extreme favoritism and it drilled me to no end.

However, I still occasionally lurk within the WoW topic because maybe somewhere down the line, I want to see them redeem themselves and live up to the legacy of 'honorable Orcs' Blizzard made themselves famous for, instead of running it to ground. Fighteer seems to take it as a Complaining About A Show You Dont Like... in a way, he might have a point. Even if I still liked WOW, I simply do not have time for MMO anymore. So anyway, he gave me a warning to stop being a negative nanny, and for a moment I seemed to be able to comply and commented on some things that were on topic within the events (just not the gaming content).

Until yesterday.

Yesterday, while lurking at the World of Warcraft forum topics... I saw some guys expressing that they had similar problems with me: They do not like the direction of characterization the Warcraft characters have taken these days. Fighteer suddenly proceeded to 'mock' these guys by playing what I saw to be a strawman action of portraying 'mindless' WOW fandom... by acting like the Alliance fanboy and treating it like a totally Black-and-White Morality conflict with no respect of what they were in the past. Other people called him out for being off topic and 'e-jerking', and I thought that was an unbefitting, rather childish and immature action that a mod shows. Not to mention, I believed that being disillusioned with a certain direction (eg: Being afflicted with Darkness Induced Audience) and expressing it are actually normal for people and does not deserve mocking.

So... well I ended up attempting to reprimand him, but that was deciphered as being off topic and ignoring the past warning about complaining, so he gave me a ban.

What I think caused the suspension
So I had a thought that perhaps I was being really depressed or just angry. However, Septimus Heap contactd me and I was able to at least present myself without going off the handle. This made me realize that there is another reason for my actions and suspension and it all came not from the mod acting out of place, but from myself. Something that even to this day, I still wrestle against:

Single-Issue Wonk.

It changes topic every time, but it all came down to one thing: "Legacy". The 'Legacy' I was talking about right now is the 'cultured Orc' thing Blizzard invented, and still put there in the page Our Orcs Are Different. So it pissed me off that Blizzard dared to stray very far from that, and that some people even liked it that way... it made me feel like that these people are pointing fingers at me and saying "You don't like faction war or worshipping the Alliance? You are no true Warcraft fan or not a good person!" Maybe it's just in my head, but I am not sure, the actions I've seen so far and how Blizzard continued to drive Warcraft their way seemed to like ensure that all those views were justified.

And thus, when Fighteer began his 'e-jerking', I ended up getting instinctively riled up because of that Single-Issue Wonk, he included that thing about mocking the Horde status (which was great during the WC3 era) and that hit the Single-Issue Wonk with me, blinding me from all warnings in the past and mouth him off. Now I'm not saying 'Fighteer shouldn't have used that for mocking', but more or less, I really should have built better fortitude to not be affected on that (but even so, due to Warcraft's massive popularity, I am usually bound to see other 'Alliance glorifying, Horde mocking' somewhere else outside and my sore spot being hit again).

Oh and there's one more thing that I think is worth noting and could contribute on why I ended up getting a suspension.

I think I may be Sarcasm-Blind.

Fighteer might have stated that he was just being sarcastic, but I should have noticed it without him putting on Sarcasm Mode on. I noticed that throughout my life, I tend to be really hard to notice sarcasm and take things on face value a lot. So it is a combination of being unable to identify sarcasm quickly and my Single-Issue Wonk being hit that caused my suspension.

Regardless, I agree that the faults lie within me.

Proposal to reclaim my forum-editing rights again
To be honest, though, I noticed that my time in TV Tropes has been less and less (even in Trope Pantheons, an area I was most active with in the past), since I have a job that I want to keep for a very long time. So... it would be easy to just accept the ban and then never return.

Still, there are some unfinished business I had in Trope Pantheons before retiring from there (some users have followed suit), and... well, unless it's about Warcraft or ANY Blizzard franchises, I tend to swim along nicely with others (even the notorious Fire Emblem one). I have had my cases of other Single-Issue Wonk and for the most part I was able to hold them off before it broke like this. Therefore, I wish to be granted my forum-posting rights again.

If you are worried that I will fly off the handle again, I do have a 'prevention' proposal—Scratch that. Make it two. One 'seemingly normal' solution and one 'rather extreme' solution that will always end with 'permanent ban from forum posting AND wiki-editing' (you can also add 'preventing me from making any other account at all' too):

  • Solution 1: If any mods see me committing the same mistake again, just swing the ban hammer without any warning (or two mistakes, tops. But I prefer just one mistake.)
  • Solution 2: If any mods see me posting any of the forums about Blizzard games (that is: Warcraft (WOW and WC3 Reforged), Diablo, Starcraft, Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm)... swing the banhammer. No need to see if my post is on-topic or for some reason I regain my faith on Blizzard or I just happen to post accidentally. See me post there again, ban me and I will take the ban gracefully.

Those are my proposals to make sure that I will be wary on visiting those topics again. And IF my ban is lifted, I will first go to the Insecurity topic in Yack Fest and post to see if anyone can help give advice about my Single-Issue Wonk or how to read sarcasm and not getting riled up over it. (But that solution and 'ban-hammer' threat still takes place if you decide to take up to that offer)

I DID think about making a topic for people to channel the dissatisfaction of Warcraft's direction in the Yack Fest, but after that self-reflection, I just felt that to be unnecessary (unless you think it's actually a good idea and making sure that the actual topic will never derail again. The bigger a fanbase got, the more likely negativity will pour.)

That's all for the proposal. I've thought that to ensure this won't happen again, and if it happens again, that'll be the real end between me and TV Tropes. Is that acceptable?

~The_Taming_Interpreter, take note that your gut misled you deeply in those edits. Your suspension has been released. Further wonking on religious elements will take you right back here, with much less leniency.

~bunny001, there is such a thing as editing problematically without engaging in an edit war. Deleting other people's fanfic recs because you don't like it ("bias" isn't something we care about in why a fic is recced) is a problem. If - if - your suspension is released, you're going to get the boot rather swiftly for any future offenses. Are we clear?

~Gene0129, well, it's good that you recognize that you were rude. However, ascribing your outburst to a single troper is troubling, given that the initial report was willfully going against the definition of a trope. A single troper isn't responsible for a trope definition. Frankly, any troper could have brought up the page in question (SNKBoss.Dark Souls), and it still wouldn't have been correct of you to go ahead with creating that page. The rude defiance is just part of that. So - what gives? You've been here for a while.

OK. I apologize for replying to a suspended user, although this somewhat confirms what I was saying. One more rule that I didn't know and that can get you in trouble. I also apologize for being too demanding about my editing suspension.

I can however not apologize for the content of this post. I am also aware that you as moderators have a difficult task and that you are walking a thin line between being too lenient and being too strict. See, I have been a mod at a different site myself, so I can relate to you, but I have also seen how overly strict mods can absolutely wreck a good forum. This has become a problem at TV Tropes and it needs to be addressed.

Enforcing quality standards on a wiki via bans instead of warning the offender first is already a controversial move. Sure, it will save you time that would otherwise be spent on re-editing, but it also takes you a huge step closer to shutting the wiki off to outsiders. If you feel that it is absolutely necessary to go this way, at the very least you must make sure that there is an efficient appeal process.

As far as I can tell, this is not the case on TV Tropes. Most bans take weeks, if not several months to get lifted and the second ban, even if it's just due to a technicality like example indentation, is typically permanent. When you're, like myself, mostly reading the wiki and casually making edits, your chance of getting a ban lifted is even smaller and the probability that you incur another suspension is higher, since you are not familiar with all the rules.

At this point, I am asking myself why I would even bother to get my privileges back. After all, I could still enjoy a high quality wiki carefully written and curated by a small centralized group of elite editors. But then again, I distrust the mainstream media for exactly the same reason and I don't know if TV Tropes will still be worthwhile if the same happened here. Please don't ruin this wiki!

~generalerror, I have to ask why, then, as someone experienced with the responsibilities of moderating, you apparently, over a 5-year plus account, have not familiarized yourself with some of more prevalent rules. ROCEJ and rules against agenda-based editing is hardly something we shy away from. However, other mods have addressed the original reason for your suspension. I'm reiterating.

Notifiers (private messages) are also in use to help along new/fumbling tropers, instead of an outright ban as soon as a toe is put out of line. Repeated instances of troublesome editing, which indicate there is little to no effort in familiarizing with the rules, or ignoring notifiers, are more often the result of suspensions.

For the record, you were initially responded to one day after your first post. Same timeframe on the second response from the mod team. On your third and fourth, yes, you were accidentally overlooked. It happens. It's hardly targeted at you. As you may have noticed, there were several back-and-forths that made for some background noise.

Also, the warning about not responding to other users is literally at the top of the thread.

If you had asked without demanding, your suspension would have been released, with our apologies for the oversight. But if you would like to take your toys and leave, then that's no skin off our nose.
