Go To

This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't spam the thread about your appeal, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

I got banned again, this time without even a notice or a reason for the suspension. I believe it was related to a user (Julian Lapostat) who I had my previous quarrel with, given the timing. However, I didn't do anything breaking the rules. I didn't start an edit war, I wasn't overtly rude, and I tried to start discussions over major changes I made to pages.

I personally believe that the aforementioned user seems to have it out for me and considers himself/herself more privileged than the rest of the site (he/she demands that any edits I make that he personally dislikes have to first be cleared in a lengthy discussion thread, while not holding him/herself to that same standard). It honestly feels like a witch hunt, with another user trying to abuse the rules to get a troper they don't like (me) banned from editing.

Sorry if this is a bit tense, but I genuinely don't see how I've done anything wrong (besides not kowtowing to another troper who personally didn't like my edits), and it's pretty frustrating to have your editing priveleges suspended without notice or reason under very shifty circumstances.

I would like to talk about lifting my suspension. I have waited patiently for weeks, I agreed to stop spamming the forums, and I have also tried using the "Get Help With English" page. But I would actually like to talk about actually lifting it please! I was told to look here for that. Now I would like to discuss solutions please. I understand it was because of my grammar, but I noticed my grammar would slip up, but I think that trying to beat the edit timer mostly. Besides my edits weren't usually that big anyway, but that's beside the point. If there is anything I can do to finally lift this editorial ban please tell me as soon as you possible.

It appears you learned nothing from your last ban, as you got into another edit war, this time on the Narm page of Game of Thrones.

~Rorosilky5: We agreed on a two month ban. If you can't abide by that agreement, then our only recourse is a permanent one. Up to you.

~Hapless Crocodilian: Your grammar in that post is atrocious, and there's no timer you can conveniently blame. We cannot allow you to edit like that, period.

That's false. I didn't get into an edit war. I made some changes and posted on the discussion board about it, as I am apparently required to do for every change I make now. Someone didn't like my changes and said I was "edit warring", even though I only made one edit and didn't get in a back and forth post-delete-repost with Julian Lapostat (I did go back later and make some edits to the page, but they were separate issues and had naught to do with the my previous edits on the page).

Simply put, there was NO edit war. I've been falsely accused.

Okay, I may be wrong on that, but what about the unilateral deletions? Did you ever discuss the examples that you removed?

I would like to make a second application for the reinstatement of my editing privileges. They were revoked because I thought a YMMV entry on 'Game of Thrones S 7 E 3 "The Queen's Justice"' was inappropriate (the entry was based on, quite frankly, a factual error). I thought I made a solid case for the edit and I have a feeling I was suspended simply for using the phrase 'you're wrong'. I know YMMV is YMMV, but this was not an opposing viewpoint of a fact, this was a viewpoint of a falsehood.

Weren't you paying any attention when we responded to you last time you appealed? One does not simply drop in when it comes to Edit Banned. We need you to engage in conversation with us.

You were suspended because you were edit warring.

So in my last post in the Ask The Tropers page was trying to ask politely, not give orders. And I knew if I failed, then there'd be nothing else I can do. So I've moved forward from that discussion and won't do something like that again. I won't re-add a deleted post even if it's less Natter-y, less Complaining About Complaining, and less angry than the previous version. Please let me edit again.

I also wanted to mention that the difference between that and the Super Mario Galaxy 2 Never Live It Down fiasco is, for Super Mario Galaxy 2 I was more complaining about the plot and had an opinion that nobody shared. With stuff related to the Phantom Menace, I was protesting audiences being judgmental in that way without caring if he hadn't been poorly written nor played by an actor who couldn't act. But since it looks like I can't do that either, nor even ask politely not to allow such posts about the audiences' reactions, I've let it go. And if you un-suspend or un-ban me, I won't re-add deleted posts and attempt to be more acceptable based on the administrator's reasons to delete. I'll just let that go and avoid Edit Wars.

Fast Furious Fan, you exhausted what chances you had here with your rant on Ask The Tropers. Refusing to let it go when asked by a moderator was the last straw.

Your time on TV Tropes is up. Adieu.

I did make a post in the discussion thread when I made major deletions on the Narm page. I saw that the page had apparently had a the same issue (that being, devolving into Complaining About Shows You Don't Like) over two years ago and that people had pretty much universally agreed it was a bad thing. I still felt like I should make a post for such a big edit, though. I started a new thread on the discussion page so that people could see it and it wouldn't get buried in a years-old thread. So as you can see, I was trying really hard to make sure people could discuss the issue.

Another user responded to the thread and outright REFUSED to discuss the actual issues with the page or what should be done. Instead, the told me to bury my post in a two-year old thread and then demanded that I revert my edits "in the interest of fairness". Personally, I found this very unreasonable and a clear attempt at evading the issue. This person wanted to protect their edits but didn't seem interested in arguing about their merits.

I was trying really hard to be reasonable and to play by all the rules, and then I got stonewalled and reported by a user who thought the. It's pretty infuriating, honestly. I was really trying to do things differently after my last suspension and I feel like I got screwed over.

BTW, do you have to make a discussion post for every deletion? I get it for major edits and clean-ups, but I hardly ever see anyone do it for smaller things. Thanks in advance.

I would like to make an appeal to come back to TV Tropes. I have read the rules and understand the mistakes I have made. I apologize for those mistakes as I had no understanding of the confusion or waste of time I was causing when doing these. I am hoping for a chance to do things right! Thank you.

jogarz: If it's YMMV (as is the case here, since it's a Narm subpage) or if there's a dispute, there needs to be a discussion. Entries with similar issues can be consolidated to one query.

There are times when removing YMMV entries without a discussion are valid, but they're restricted to the following:

  • Factually incorrect entries
  • Misplaced objective tropes or Trivia tropes
  • Entry is misuse or is overly complaining or gushy
  • Cleanup efforts (as discussion is already covered in the appropriate threads) or trope cuts
  • Speculation

Not liking the entries is never a valid reason to delete a YMMV. They are subjective by nature. And let's not get started on editing with an agenda...

I wasn't editing with an agenda or deleting things because I didn't like them. I was doing cleanup because most of the page was incredibly whiny and filled with complaining, which is generally not okay in addition to not really describing Narm.

In an old discussion thread people had already decided that there were many entries that were just complaining, not really describing Narm, so I would have had a justified reason for cleaning up the page already. Nonetheless, I still made a new post for the sake of being fair and inclusive.

So I genuinely don't understand what I did wrong, If anything I went out of my way to make sure I was following the rules.

I was told that one of the reasons my editing was suspended was due to an "editing war", i.e. some liberal didn't like me telling the truth and deleted my contribution, I put it back in, because uh...it was the truth? They deleted it because uh...it was the truth? Then I found my editing suspended. Oh my goodness, dare I ask if what is good for the goose is good for the gander and the other person was suspended as well? I mean, it takes TWO sides to have an "edit war" and then there's usually more than enough blame to go around.

Hi. I've been edit-suspended and I'm not sure why.

The last thing I remember doing here is having a debate in Ask The Tropers regarding the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 4 back in May. I haven't made any edits since then, and haven't engaged in an Edit War to my knowledge.

I've been banned from editing. I believe it possibly has to do with me deleting a trope example on the Thomas Sanders page. The trope was 'Ambiguously Bi' which I didn't feel was appropriate considering that Sanders, especially lately, has been especially clear that he is gay. On reflection however I should have cited my reasoning and even then I understand that some people wondering why he was 'Ambiguously Bi' in past works may have come to his trope page for an answer; meaning my removal of the trope was impulsive and ill thought out. I would like to request that my suspension be lifted. Thank you.

@noo_ah: Indeed, if you remove stuff you ought to explain why you did remove it. And when people readd stuff you had removed, start a discussion on the discussion tab instead of repeatedly re-deleting the item.

@Taskmaster123: This topic isn't for you to ask us to take action on someone else. I did so in form of a PM, but this is the second time you have been banned for political soapboxing in places where we don't want it. Banned twice for the same issue and didn't get our concerns as they were expressed in our past conversations at all, so you are done here.

I am now incredibly confused. In this forum you have told me that I was in error for complaining in it (presumably that is what 'dropping in' referred to), but that I am also in error for replying to you by DM? This is all starting to seem very elaborate. All I have been trying to say is that I was attempting to correct a factual error and assumed edit warring policy did not apply to fact correction.
