This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

[up]Your edits on Film.Kingdom Of Heaven are problematic, as you uncommented a Zero Context Example without adding any context and seem to misunderstand two tropes: Cruel Mercy and Fate Worse than Death.

Your notification history indicates you've had particular issues with ZCEs before. So, moving forward - what gives an example sufficient context?

ZC Es? What does it stand for? And I am not trying to argue with you, but I understood that Fate Worse than Death is something that is worse from death. How is Guy's fate not worse than death or Cruel Mercy?

Edit: Oh wait! ZC Es means Zero Context Example. Sufficient context is when you actually explain how the trope relates and applies to a character. I understand that.

Fate Worse than Death / Cruel Mercy requires more than just having their request to die denied, which is all that is provided in your edits. If there were more to it in the work, then it should have been included in the example write-up.

As for Zero Context Examples, you're explaining it correctly, but this is the example you uncommented:

This is the paragon of zero context. Please re-write it in this thread so we know that you both understand sufficient context and include it in your edits.

[up] There is actually more work that shows that Guy got CM/FWTD.

Evil Redhead: Raynald de Chatillon has long red hair and beard and he is a religious fanatic who hates all Muslims. His actor is also a father on General Hux.

[up]That second sentence has nothing to do with providing context, but that's better. I'll release your suspension but review this page and keep this in mind: any reader with no familiarity with the work should be able to understand how the trope applies without clicking to other pages.

I just saw that I was temporarily banned from editing. Thank you for the respectful tone in which you let me know, and I want to return that in kind. Please let me know what I've done wrong and behave better in the future. I will be heading out of town on Sun, July 9, and I'll probably have minimal access to internet for the two weeks following. So hopefully we can settle this beforehand, but if not, please know that I am not ignoring messages or angry about the response given; I am simply unable to respond. Thanks.

~Wyldchyld: You were edit-warring an example in Seasonal Rot. While you did post in the discussion page, it was done simultaneously with re-deleting the contented example. The correct action would have been to start the discussion page without continuing the edit war.

~ShaiPa: Joint editing by this account and a second, mkmckoy, participated in an edit war on Degraded Boss.

Ah, thanks for that, I know what you're referring to.

Your post makes me think I may have been misunderstanding an Administrivia rule without realising it. So, just to clarify:

When I take an example to the Discussion Page, I always cut/paste it to the Discussion Page. What you're saying is that, when an example is taken to the Discussion Page, it should be copy/pasted, not cut/pasted. Is that correct?

If so, I have absolutely no problem copy/pasting in future instead of cut/pasting. That's a misunderstanding of the rule on my part and one I'm happy to immediately correct.

As to the example itself, I do know the troper readded the example after I'd moved to the Discussion Page but I had absolutely no intention of removing the entry again; I was going to ask ATT for third-party advice on handling the situation, which I think needs an Examples Are Not General rewrite, not a permanent removal. I don't know the specifics of this fandom complaint or I would have reworded the example myself; the other troper does seem to know the specifics, so I have no problem with him rewording it into a specific example.

[up]Doing a null edit with a reason pointing towards the discussion page + copy/pasting would be appropriate. It seems like you understand the thinking and - for the record - the other troper has been called in. Feel free to start an ATT thread about it and/or discuss it over PM. Releasing your suspension.

I would like to know exactly why I have been suspended from editing. I would like to edit again, but I want to know what the problem is. Once I know what I did wrong, I will try my hardest to not repeat my mistakes. Even if you give me an entire list of things that I did wrong, I will heed your advice and listen to what you say. I will work with you guys, because I vow to not make these mistakes again.

~Mouschilight:OK, let's take this from the top.

  • You've been taking entries that were previously worded neutrally and rewriting them to gush over your preferred ships (most notably the Birds of a Feather entry on Characters.Naruto Naruto Uzumaki).
  • You have issues with inserting Sink Holes into articles.
  • You've been linking to fan scanlations in violation of our rules regarding pirated material.

Ohhh! I think I know what happened. I recentlyadded a comment under Degraded Boss about Scarecrow's role in the Dark Knight movies. I thought I was adding this for the first time, but I must have added this previously, and then when it was taken down, I forgot I had added it before. I was not trying to engage in any type of Edit War. I will do my best to be mindful of what I have posted.

And to be on the safe side, is there any other wrong behavior I have engaged in that I should be on the lookout for?

It appears that you may have a plugin that adds "cinematic" before "universe", as evident in your edits to UsefulNotes.Albert Einstein. Can you shut it off or set it so it won't run on this site?

Not a preferred ship, I accept canon ships but I don't actually ship. Mainly because shipping can get ugly and I try to stay away from it and just stick with what was given in canon. Not just in anime, but in all media. What I was trying to do was add information based on the tropes that were already present. However, I do realize that maybe I went overboard in trying to put *as much information* as possible, when I should have kept it as simple and straight to the point. Sometimes "less is more", and in real life I tend to forget that.

And I didn't realize that "saiyanisland.com" was a fan translation, because all of the interviews I've tried to put on TV Tropes were official translations, but on fan-translated websites I suppose? Maybe that was it? If I can find official websites (i.e., Viz.com or crunchyroll.com) that have those officially translated interviews, I can replace the saiyanisland.com ones, but if not, I can remove the interview(s) entirely if need be and reference it *without* the actual link (i.e., "Jump Festa 2017 interview" but not actually include the link to that interview). But what about You Tube links? Are those still okay? For any media?

And pot holes... ah... inserting too many trope links? I was trying to redirect to other pages, but if it's not necessary and the trope was fine as it was, then I'll make sure not to Pot Hole / Sink Hole anymore. But what about Creator/Actor pages? Like on The Graham Norton Show? I know I fixed the names there (from Eddie Redmayne —> Eddie Redmayne).

Again, most of my problems stem from trying to add too much information, when I should have kept it as simple and to the point.

What should I look at to make sure I follow the rules? I've been looking all over TV Tropes to find some kind of rule page, but I can't find anything. I really want to make sure I don't make these mistakes again. I want to be more careful. I want to work with you guys.

Is there anything else? I'm all ears.

Thank you,

mouschilight

@Amour Mitts: Bingo. You can bump an old TLP if and only if you are willing to do the work to get it to launch-worthy condition.

Ok. Do you realize why it's a bad idea to necrobump old TLPs the way you did? It's frowned on because of two things: First, you're not adding anything of substance to it; you're asking for someone else to do the wotrk you think should be done. Second, all you're doing is pushing newer, active TLPs down the list. You aren't clearing out the backlog, you're just changing what's in it.

Shai Pa, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here, mostly because you don't have any other troubling overlaps between your edits under this account, and your edits under mkmckoy. However, it would be better all around if you kept your editing to one account. This will help avoid situations like this in the future.

As for other issues, you've got notifiers under mkmckoy for indexing, indentation, misplacing YMMV items, and not linking wicks correctly. You can find advice on these issues at the following: How Indexing Works, Example Indentation in Trope Lists, YMMV.Home Page, and Wiki Word. If you have any additional questions, look to Ask The Tropers.

Your suspension is released.

Regarding what Madrugada said to me, I had started a Short Term Projects thread regarding the huge number of old drafts in the Trope Launch Pad. I tried to ask nicely in that thread how we should do to them—like discarding them if they were a duplicate of an existing trope, or putting them Up For Grabs if they were tropeworthy enough.

Yes, I did realize what I have done to the newer TLPs by just pushing them down the list by bumping the oldest ones. We should keep the aforementioned thread going by discarding older drafts (if no one else wants to take over them) in order to free up server space. I think there should also be a rule in the TLP saying to not bump too many drafts.

So once again, if you lift my editing ban, I WILL promise not to repeat the same mistakes I did in the TLP ever again.

Okey doke, @Amour Mitts. You're good to go. We're going to be working on clearing out some of the backlog, (and possibly writing some sort of auto-deleter for TL Ps that are too old and not salvageable), but for that we need data. So the mods are doing it so we can compare notes.
