This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't spam the thread about your appeal, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

It's been about a year since I was suspended and I would like to come back.

[up] Your previous appeal was replied to, here. What we said then stands.

I also note that you have not made much apparent effort in the Help with English topic, calling into question how serious you are about improving your grammar.

Can I please be allowed to edit again?

I know what I must have done wrong. And I promise I won't try to create any new pages.. I'll just stick to adding stuff onto existing pages.

@Deadbeatloser 22, Probably for adding things that came across more as personal opinion rather than a small general consensus.

I would like to point out that St Fan apparently, from what I've seen, takes the placement of quotation marks far too seriously. When I was editing the pages they brought up on the Ask the Tropers thread, I would like to point out that in all cases, the quotation marks were originally inside the link, and as far as I can tell, St Fan engaged in edit warring by editing the pages for the sole purpose of placing the quotation marks outside the links, without doing anything else. Yes, I did put the quotation marks back inside, but I also made several other, constructive changes — namely adding a few examples, and in the case of the Funny Moments pages, re-sorting examples to put them in the order they happened in the episode. As I pointed out in an older Ask the Tropers thread, the crowning absurdity of this dispute is that there are no actual guidelines for the placement of quotation marks in a link to a TV recap page at all, which I'm sure the mods are aware of. And it's also worth noting that St Fan sent me some somewhat passive-aggressive/hostile-ish messages regarding the placement of quotation marks. I told them they shouldn't worry about it because there are no official guidelines, but I doubt they listened to me. From what I can tell, essentially, they seem to have something against me just because I disagree with them on the placement of quotation marks.

I patiently await a response, and possibly some new guidelines regarding quotation marks to put this frankly ridiculous/annoying dispute at an end.

I was never here, and you never saw me.

~Athena Blue: OK, stop. What St Fan may or may not have done is kind of irrelevant to the fact you are now on your third ban for edit warring in as many months.

And for the record I am not seeing a whole lot of hostile or passive-aggressive tone in the messages that they sent you.

First off, I obviously was not attempting to get suspended again. I don't believe that anyone tries to deliberately get suspended. It's frustrating. I'm frustrated.

Second: The pages that I edited that were cited as reason for this suspension, because I was changing someone's edits regarding the placement of quotation marks of all things:

  • My edits:
    • The Funny Moments pages: Changed quotation marks. Re-sorted examples to place them roughly in the order they appeared in the episodes. The quotation marks, by the way, were placed back in their original placing inside the link to remain consistent with the other Funny Moments pages in that section.
    • The Noodle Incident page: I came there to add an example. Besides doing so, I changed several instances of awkward or unnecessary wording, added a few links and, as a last thing, changed the quotation marks.
  • St Fan's edits: Based on looking at the edit history for those pages, they changed the quotation marks and nothing else.

Ladies and gentlemen of the mod jury, I would like to state as my closing argument of this salvo that, although I (obviously) disagree with St Fan over the position of quotation marks in links to TV recap pages, I generally do not edit pages solely for that reason, as that's rather petty. I also did other, constructive edits — which, if I ever get editing privileges back, I will probably have to do all over again since judging by the Ask the Tropers thread where they asked for my suspension, they were reverted.

I await a response with the most patience I can muster given my obvious frustration.

Athena, you reverted a stylistic change that was made in good faith, under standing permission from the moderation team. You did so apparently out of spite or resentment. I cannot find anything to be proud of in that. That you persist in declaring your actions to be right or justified only digs you in deeper.

I wasn't doing it out of spite. It was just an incidental edit, as addition to other editing I was doing on those pages. I realize that I probably sound like I am attempting to shift all blame onto someone else. However, I found recent edits to the Power Crystal and Failed a Spot Check pages, done by St Fan, which consisted primarily of tweaking the positioning of the quotation marks in an entry I had edited, and pretty much nothing else. If you don't believe me, you are free to check the edit history pages yourself, because it's there, I checked.

I never at any point wanted or intended to get into a dispute regarding quotation marks, alright? I mean, there's not even an official style guideline for how to do them in a link! I'm just saying that, from my perspective, if I'm guilty of switching around quotation marks, so are they, and possibly moreso than me.

I would also like to explain that, frankly, the reason why I think it looks better with the quotation marks inside is because, since links are in blue text as opposed to the regular black, and since titles of TV episodes are traditionally written in quotation marks, it looks better. After all, a properly punctuated title for a TV episode recap page has quotation marks surrounding the episode title proper, so to me it just looks natural. I thought this was a stupid thing to get into an argument about, and I told St Fan this back in our original message exchange.

If I get un-suspended, I intend to go to the Wishlist and ask for official standards to be created about this matter, just to settle it once and for all. Quotation marks are, in my opinion, a ridiculous thing to get suspended over.

You could have easily avoided this if you brought it into discussion and accept whatever consensus is reached. But now, because you edit warred over something petty and refuse to back down, it's time for you to go.

Goodbye.

I'm a little confused as to a suspension. We were having a discussion (on the discussion forum, as appropriate) when there was confusion over articles.

I admit that this was getting overly semantical, but there was consensus discussion regarding the Mass Effect: Andromeda page as both excessively wordy and "blog-like" in it's discussion of issues. Much needed to be cut.

If it's been going on too long, I'd be happy to wrap things up. But I need to be able to post in order to do so. Please advise on this issue. Thanks.

I was asking for an explanation about how adding a few extra facts to avoid confusion for an outside observer wasn't meeting the standard of not justifying fan reactions. I was already trying to compromise by keeping things as concise as I possibly could, but apparently even clarifying a couple of details wasn't acceptable?

~Billowy Talpine: When you last asked about your suspension, you thought it might be about Trope Launch Pad. That's only part of the problem; as we said then, you have significant grammar issues evident across all your edits. You are also misusing Example Indentation and adding Natter as seen on NightmareFuel.Kill Bill.

For some reason, you created Laconic. That Creepy Reading and added a Nightmare Fuel entry reading, "Pretty much the whole series."

Your natter issues continue on TearJerker.Pirates Of The Caribbean The Curse Of The Black Pearl, where you appended a comment to an existing entry, and you confused "there/their".

You added a Tear Jerker entry to WebAnimation. The Backwater Gospel when it belongs on a subpage.

Every single edit I've checked in your history has some sort of problem. You need to improve or we cannot let you edit.

~Thomas Veggie Drama Fan: Let me add a little detail here. As you noted, the issue on YMMV.Steven Universe is that you appear to be on a vendetta against a particular character and are inserting personal opinions rather than general fan opinions into the examples. Further, when these were (correctly) removed, you engaged in an Edit War over them.

We need editors who will work to improve the quality and information content of articles, not ones who will pursue personal agendas. Got it?

~Matt620 and ~Rainbow Phoenix: Both of you were engaged in an Edit War. Taking it to discussion (or PMs) is well and good, but that needs to happen before the dueling edits in the article, not after. Is that understood?

~Higherbrainpattern: As per our earlier discussion, we're prepared to release your suspensions, but I want it made very clear that we will not tolerate further attacks on other users' opinions. If that happens, it'll constitute a third strike for you and we'll be forced to make the ban permanent. Is this understood?

Yes, I agree. It should have been taken there before. We tried that, but clearly failed. We should keep things in Discussion until finished.
