This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't spam the thread about your appeal, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

An Edit War is when you repeatedly make the same edits when someone's changed or reverted them. If that happens, discuss it with the other troper(s) first. The article history can show you who changed it and why, if they left a reason. Also, pay attention when sent notifications via PM.

~Chris Valentine: When tropers are involved in an Edit War, they are suspended so we can explain how we resolve disputes. This isn't about whether your edits to YMMV.Beauty And The Beast 2017 are factually correct, but how you approach situations when you have disagreements with other people.

YMMV doesn't mean, "It's, like, my opinion, man." Tropes on that subpage have concrete definitions that must be observed. A Designated Villain is a character who is supposed to be the bad guy in a narrative, but who never does anything to justify it, or even does things that might be considered good depending one's point of view. Thus, the audience (since this is a YMMV trope), may argue about whether they are actually a bad guy. Generally this requires a significant weight of opinion in the community. If the community cannot decide, with two (or more) factions holding irreconcilable points of view, then it's a Base-Breaking Character instead.

Most importantly, it's on you to participate in the discussion. We work by consensus, not by ramming our points into each other like bulls in a pasture.

~Jaredwarrensince1991: Your plagiarism was on musician pages, and consisted of directly copying from Wikipedia. The discussion occurred here. You can participate if you want; I'm not sure how much of your work has already been fixed.

I want to be clear here: do it again, ever, and you'll be permanently banned. Is that understood?

Thanks for getting back to me. If you would be able to provide me some specific further advice, I would appreciate it. Were both I and the other troper with whom I had this particular dispute abiding by the rules when we were simply going back and forth in the discussion page? If so, was it the point when we went back to editing the tropes themselves the point where suspensions were deemed appropriate? Or were we debating the topic too stridently?

If it was the editing the warranted the suspensions, what is the proper course of action in that scenario (where one party is continuing to edit while the other party is trying to restrict the dispute to the discussion page)?

I hope its okay to ask all these questions in a bunch like this.

~Chris Valentine: Yes, the problem was that you stopped discussing and went back to warring. (Or continued warring while discussing, I admit to not comparing timestamps in detail) If discussion over an disputed example on the discussion page can't resolve the issue, it's generally worth bringing it to the "Is This An Example" thread in the Forums, to get more and different eyes on it.

If one party refuses to discuss it at all, or insists that the page be their way while the discussion is going on, or ignores a decision reached either in Discussion or in "Is This An Example", let it be and report it in Ask The Tropers. It takes two to keep an edit war going.

~Madrugada,

Thanks for that input. I had a gut feeling that I shouldn't take the bait and revert that most recent edit, but, quite simply, the way it was written irked me, and I gave into my annoyance at that. Should a similar situation occur again, I will be sure to restrict my contributions to the topic to the appropriate channels.

What is the proper course of action now that we have discussed the issue?

Chris: Now we'll release your suspension. The other troper has not appealed, so they'll be unable to participate in the discussion. If you can't move things forward constructively via the article's Discussion page, then this topic can help resolve the issue.

~@Kaput Exaltation: You changed the image for Boxing Lessons for Superman despite an image already being present and having been selected by our Image Pickin' forum. In doing so, you ignored comments entered in the article source and someone reverting your change. This is not very polite, to say the least.

I'll gladly change the image back then: I didn't know about the Image Pickin' forum. I had changed to to reflect the new information presented, no harm intended.

What do you mean by "new information presented"?

Also, it's hard to see how you could have missed the large commented block at the top of the page while editing it.

I had added information regarding Superman's training under Larry Trent in Superman Volume 2, 1939, including a link to the issue in question.

And that justified replacing the page image, despite yours being of poorer quality and there already being an image present. Not really polite, as I said. Make sure you use Image Pickin' if you have any such inspirations in the future, okay?

~Kizuna Tallis

You were rogue launching articles for fanfics in an invalid namespace. Instead of The Other Side Of The Spectrum/, these fics need to be under Fanfic/. If "The Other Side of the Spectrum" is a series, note it in the description.

Also, on the side, we are not certain as to whether or not you acknowledged notifiers sent to you, as you never responded to them.

Oh okay then.

Since Spectrum is a series, I will make sure to note that.

I'm not sure about indexing. I've tried, but the instructions often felt vague to me. If anyone is willing to help on that, it would be very greatly appreciated.

~Kizuna Tallis: Indexing is simple. Find an index (Index Index may help), add your article in the proper place, save. The article must exist for the indexing to occur. This topic may help you find indexes, or answer questions.

Also, notifiers aren't there for giggles. Please pay attention or you may get suspended again. I'll release you now.

~Mdjj1996: Not so fast. Your editing history, with things like changing occurrences of "jerk" to "bitch" and that custom title shenanigan, looks like you're just here to troll the site. Vandalism of that sort is grounds for a summary, permanent ban. The mitigating factor here is that you have also made constructive edits (although with some problems, like excessive spoiler tagging and adequate context). So what's the deal?
