This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't spam the thread about your appeal, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Regal Ruff is a poor trope because it's literally nothing more than "this person is either upper class or aspires to be and therefore wears a ruff". It is ZCE-bait incarnate and the examples prove it.

Requisite Royal Regalia is all the trope we need for the idea of nobility wearing fancy clothes. Anything else is The Same But More Specific. There should also be a trope for common folks wearing upper-class finery to imitate nobility.

[up]"regalia" isn't quite the same thing as just fancy clothes. I admit there could be a trope covering that, but Requisite Royal Regalia is more meant to be the ceremonial gear for royalty and nobility. We need another trope to cover the clothing that signifies high class (which could still allow for sub tropes).

But regardless I'm still trying to figure out how a few badly done, but not outright rulebreaking, ykttw's are a reason to suspend privileges for that section.

Because access to that section is a privilege and single-handedly being behind more poor quality proposals than anyone else is a good reason to lose that privilege, especially when you have a history of it and should know better.

[up]But that wasn't the reason given* (and wasn't the point of ykttw to get quality as an end result, even if the initial proposal might look bad?). It was simply that I was posting proposals in a certain category.

* I won't deny that I've posted lots of bad proposals, but that's because I've posted lots of ykttw posts in total, given all the years I've been here. And I would honestly like to know if I've truly made more bad ykttw's than any other (and by what measure are they bad).

I'd nuked eight YKTT Ws in the past week when I banned you and five of them were yours. That means you have a pretty high quality control problem.

[up]1. Which ones?

2. What are there dates? As in how spread out are they? Do they average one bad ykttw a week or a year?

2. I admit a large ratio of the ykttw's I make aren't that good (again, I've been here for years so I've made a lot of them, but have discarded many I found don't work, and will see if I can discard even more this weekend), but the hope is that ykttw will make them good, or discard them, which I thought was the main purpose of ykttw.

3. Even then how is that a bannable offense (assuming those five posts are the reason that happened)?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

3: Because we are getting sick of bad YKTTW entries, even if those come out of a cleanup thread, and we have to send a message to that community to start discarding obviously flawed ideas so they don't pop right over to the cleanup threads. That is, after all, one of the purposes of YKTTW — to kill bad ideas. People who keep making them are being anti-helpful and need to shape up or get out.

[up]Okay, what to you mean by "bad"? I'm honestly not sure what criteria is being used here. I don't post stubs. I make sure to use three examples if I can think of that many (if any have less I'll see about discarding them). If it's the concept, isn't that what ykttw discussion is for? To try to find one, fix it if there is one, or discard if there isn't any (because again I've nuked plenty of my ykttw's)?

And if you have a problem with a thread agreeing to a bad ykttw, why not post on those threads and letting most of the users there whether the mods think a certain idea is good or not? I've learned over the years that admin and mod fiat trumps even crowners, so I would have gone along with whatever was decreed.

Why was I banned? All of my edits are good intentioned. I mean well when I edit and when I do make errors I try to fix them and I also try not to make ones as well. Also let me ask you this why should you ban people just for simple grammar mistakes? Some of those people might had otherwise good grammar and made a simple mistake. I only want to help and I mean well every I edit I'm sorry for whatever I did. Can I please be unblocked?

~Mario876: Good intentions are wonderful, but if you leave barely readable messes on the wiki, they do nobody any good. Our writing standards are not subject to negotiation, nor are our rules on Natter.

If you think you can improve, we can offer you the chance to demonstrate it. But whining at us isn't going to help your case.

Are you insulting me? I am not whining. If it came off that way I'm sorry I was only saying things and asking things like how it seems harsh to ban someone over grammar. Also I just want to know this since it's seems I won't be unblocked anytime soon. Why was I blocked? I just want to know why.

Grammar and natter. Suspensions are used to stop problematic behavior. How you correct the issue is up to you, but we won't release it until we have a sense that you know what was done wrong and will correct it.

I would like to be un-banned so I can clear out my older posts (most of which were made before the new restrictions on what is and isn't a trope), and be told what criteria I should meet before I make another proposal. Or better yet have that posted somewhere so every user can see.

Hello. I would like for you to remove the suspension on my account. I will try to use better grammar. I need to understand how TV Tropes works better and try to make fewer typos. I just recently became a trope editor as of late 2015.(It was between September or November I believe. Please return my account. Thank you.

We're going to have to ask that you run potential edits past the "Get help with English" thread before we consider releasing your suspension.

As an example, your most recent edit, to YMMV.RWBY, demonstrates a pretty flagrant disregard for the rules of written English.

I seemed to have been suspended a second time, but I don't get what it is I did wrong. If it's the indexing thing, I really don't get how it works... I'm honestly sorry.

@Pikatwig: If you know how to add an example, you know how to index. It's just a matter of adding the trope on the appropriate index just like you would any other example.

If you don't know what index a page goes on, use the What index(es) should this go on? thread in Trope Talk.

It's not that hard.
