This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't spam the thread about your appeal, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

All right I’ve read through the edit war page and according to it if I’m having a disagreement with another troper I should send them a private message in order to discuss the situation with them. I can also go to ask the troper page and bring up situations their as well as pm the troper(s) or leave an edit reason if it’s necessary for their involvement in the discussion with the rest of the venue. I also have the option of going to other places such as forums or wiki talk. If a person is repeatedly vandalizing pages and is not responding to engagement then I should use the “report page” button located on the side bar in order to let the staff know what’s going on or go to ask the tropes page.

All right I think I’ve read and understand everything in regards to an edit war.

Here is a link to my earlier Camel Case response just in case you guys missed it (here).

I think I’ve gotten everything squared away now, unless I’ve missed something.

So I forgot to do this, but here is a description of when a trope can be added to the Launch Pad.

If a trope receives enough green hats, then it is the suggester of said trope’s decision whether to create the page for them. If you are not the person who made the trope you cannot launch it unless you have permission from the trope suggester.

Sorry I didn’t get this in sooner. Was busy with irl stuff.

I was suspended from posting on the forums back in April for spamming and receiving multiple thumps for being off topic.

I have cooled down since then. I am ready to engage in more constructive and reasonable on-topic conversations. I know when to stay on topic. I’m appealing as I know now that I won’t go off on any tangents. If I am suspended until a specific date, I can wait until then.

Hi,

I am politely asking about my continued suspension (which is a few days short of Week 4 now) to ask about an update to when responses would be given out.

This is in no way to antagonize or gripe about the wait, but simply following the rules to request when it seems a reply was missed. We have had several posts saying responses would be coming in a few days but now a whole week has passed.

I've been a long time editor with this being my first time being suspended, I feel I have long learned my lesson for what I was suspended for and just wish to return to editing with new perspective and things to br mindful of.

Please and thank you.

I have not gotten a response yet, so here's another appeal:

I got suspended last month for removing images from Moments subpages because they reached the certain amount of votes and allocated days to be removed when that should be the job of the moderators. I now understand why what I did was wrong, as all that does is cause confusion for the process. I greatly apologize for doing what I did and promise to never make that mistake again.

~Tailikku 33051

On YMMV.The Legend Of Zelda I, you repeatedly added incorrect Example Indentation after it was fixed for you. This means you're also edit warring.

~Brydav 33064

Hello yet again. You were told not to list examples under redirects and given an explanation of why, and you edit warred them back to their redirects. There are reasons using redirects instead of the article titles is discouraged, and you need to heed the rules.

~Beast C 33065

That's better. However, the idea of bullet points is so that examples are standalone. They are not substitutes for paragraphing. You should be able to just read the first or second bullet by itself, and the second alone looks like:

  • Adaptational Dumbass: He is, however, way more careless with maintaining his Secret Identity than his other younger selves: within one month of being Spider-Man he’s caught with his pants down when his daughter walks in on him eating ice cream in full costume. Meanwhile, both 616 and 1610 Peters were able to hide their identities much better and much longer.

However, if you enter the example as:

  • Adaptational Dumbass:
    • Downplayed in that while not exactly a moron, this Peter seems less scientifically inclined than most other Peter Parkers. It’s heavily implied that Peter’s interest in science phased out after not being bitten by the spider, considering how much of his Teen Genius knowledge was applied to his crime fighting, most famously his web-shooters and his spider-tracers.
    • Peter is way more careless with maintaining his Secret Identity than his other younger selves: within one month of being Spider-Man he’s caught with his pants down when his daughter walks in on him eating ice cream in full costume. Meanwhile, both 616 and 1610 Peters were able to hide their identities much better and much longer.

Now both bullet points are independent of each other. Does that make sense?

~Angelus Nox 33066

Okay, we'll hold you to that. 30-some accumulated thumps, so please mind your manners on hot button issues and stay on topic. You may post in OTC again.

~Rya 33067

Close enough, I guess. Still not getting the sense that you've actually read Edit War. Please list some ways you can avoid edit warring in the future, and you have to abide by those rules.

~Cordite 455 33070

Um, yes we do, but you will stay suspended from forum posting for the time being. We warned that you have to show restraint and gave you a chance, and you blew it in less than a week.

~pittsburghmuggle 33071

Thank you for donating to the Kickstarter. And for being patient in your appeals. The two unindexed subpages appeared to represent a pattern, since it's a common error by tropers. So you do know that even those need to be indexed, yes? If so, then you may go.

~Sergeant Bane 33075

Those are all good. Can we trust you from now on to understand the tropes you're describing and make the effort to provide context for all examples?

~Phyrexian Ajani 95 33083

Great. You may go.

~Phantomskyler 33084

Here's the attempt

I was envisioning the examples to look like:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Almost two years before the teaser trailer was released, Deviant Art member Local Spaghetto drew a picture of Soldier: 76 in a Vault jumpsuit.
    • Due to the many similarities between the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises (aside from them sharing the same developer), many fans have jokingly suggested over the years various ways for dragons and other supernatural elements to show up in the Wasteland. This Prequel game introduces to the franchise the "Scorchbeasts," ferocious mutated bats the size of small business jets that can unleash sonic blasts from their mouths. So apparently, dragons have already existed in the Wasteland this entire time! This one got even more hilarious when a programmer on Twitter dug into the game and discovered that the Scorchbeasts' coding was almost entirely recycled from Skyrim's dragons, with most of the files not even being renamed. Dragons were shoehorned into the Fallout universe with the Serial Numbers Filed Off!
    • Ever since Fallout Online was shut down by Interplay, rumors about a possible MMO game set in the far future of the Fallout universe have circulated. Lo and behold, Bethesda announced at the E3 2018 Fallout 76, which is a multiplayer RPG taking place before the entire main series.

There should be no lone bullet point hanging off a "parent" bullet. If a ** is followed by a single set of ***, it's wrong. If this point is "replying" to the parent point, it's wrong.

Try again with this (again, post it here):

  • One-Hit Kill: It's entirely possible for a high-rolling critical hit to damage a character for multiple times the maximum possible Hit Points allowed in the game engine. Whenever a character dies like this, they explode spectacularly.
    • A critical hit on an aimed shot to the eyes has a very good chance of inflicting damage and then outright killing the target anyway, regardless of how many HP they have remaining, resulting in such hilarity as "[Target] suffered 0 damage from a shot to the eyes and died."

~Nononsensecapeesh

Responding to this post

Please do not leave unfinished examples. If the example is getting published on a wiki page, it should be complete. Otherwise, work on it in a notepad or sandbox until it's ready to go.

"I just don't recognise that the way you guys do" — you have to. This means understanding what a trope is and then explaining how the trope is used, so anyone reading the example understands as well.

~Rm 74 33086

We can't give you more solid answers because our responses to you are contingent on you following the rules. We've set dates before, and tropers often take them as due dates or try to do nothing except wait out the suspension period rather than use that time to learn the wiki rules and learn to work with others. A year to improve isn't really a long time.

Given your record, we're still not really comfortable giving you your wiki editing back. You've been suspended from the Trope Launch Pad for a few years, though, and we'd like to give you access there to see how you do: can you provide examples, point out errors and how to fix them, make suggestions on drafts, and get along with users and follow TLP rules without them needing to be explained to you? There's not a set number of comments you have to make, but it also has to be "portfolio worthy". How does that sound?

~twofacetoo 33088

Okay, there seems to be confusion with the initial reply to you. You've explained your perspective, and we considered it and explained our perspective. We had issued the suspension for rudeness, and since you don't contest the reason, there's no conflict here.

nobody thought to advise me on what I should do if I actually DO feel threatened or hurt by another member's private message

You report it. Ask questions. There are avenues. If you will just say 'Sorry, when others are rude to me or I need help, from now on I will ask how to fix this', we'll let you go. Why do you think no one would believe you if you just said sorry? There wasn't any reason to assume malice.

~surgoshan 33089

All right, then. You may go.

~Spaceman Spoof 33090

Some people do seriously think Covid restrictions caused anarchy or city blocks getting razed or whatever. The tropers who read your entry (including the moderation) did not think you were being humorous. Whether you're serious or not, attaching a real life issue to a trope and then playing up the events in the write-up is usually in bad taste. We're asking that you not do that.

~BarthVader 33091

You're correct that you were suspended for, yes, textbook edit warring. And since you understand that contested edits should be discussed and agreement reached before re-doing your edit, you may go.

~Golfy Ball 123 33092

Hello. Last time you were told to run your proposed edits through Get Help with English. Did the assistants on the thread respond to you several times saying your posts have no grammatical issues?

~Wilben

The issue is that you made those image changes on the wiki pages before the crowner was even called - meaning a moderator had not yet announced that voting is closed and what the results are. Once the mod post is made, then it's okay to act on the crowner, if no one has done so yet. Does that make sense?

~Tropers/Coock-atoo 33099

If you're thumped and a red post is directed at you, maybe take some more time to consider your actions. We certainly thought you were thumbing your nose at the mod post. Also, please don't post Zalgo on TV Tropes.

~smogmonster 33100

Yes, right. You can show the helpers at Get Help with English some new edits you want to make, and if you can do that 3-4 times without being given any corrections or commentary, then we can be more certain you won't have any grammatical oddities in your writing.

~Euro Burro 33107

Yes, that is better. Make sure to watch your formatting so Not-So-Cheap Imitation is linked. If the block of text looks too big, you can consider rephrasing to shorten it. Do you have any other questions about Example Indentation?

~Tropers/heathen1738 33109

See this post. You need to run some potential edits through that thread and improve enough that the helpers are telling you several times in a row that your posts need no corrections.

~Axe 23 33111

You do not wait it out. We resolve issues that got you suspended. You were responded to here.

~Tropers/Luigitehplumber 33113

That is much better, and it follows the example-writing rules. Please make sure you keep those rules in mind at all times when editing. Your suspension is released.

~Natitoonfan 33116

Unfortunately, based on the grammar errors in your post (not capitalizing...), we can't remove your suspension. You have yet to follow the instructions you were given here, which was to post entries in Get Help with English that don't require any corrections. You have to do that before you can re-appeal here.

~Okie 33117

Last time, you were asked to post in GHWE and have the helpers tell you multiple times in a row that there are no corrections needed.

Note correction posts such as this one — this points out other wiki issues in your proposed edits, such as Zero-Context Example and Example Indentation. You have to follow those rules as well.

~Blue Sparkles 33118

You've posted a great deal in the thread, but you still are making a lot of errors, and those are not acceptable on the wiki. If your suspension is removed, you must run all proposed edits through the Get Help with English thread, get a response from the assistant, and follow those corrections, before adding anything to wiki pages. Will you do that?

~DR 34 DN 0 UGHT 33120

You are correct that you shouldn't have violated the Rule of Cautious Editing Judgement. Your edit was also Edit Warring by putting the same or very similar content back without discussion. Let's say you're editing elsewhere on the wiki, and you see an edit of yours was undone — if you disagree and want to put it back, what are some ways to avoid an edit war?

~Toot 33135

I see you've posted a great deal on GHWE and indeed have several that don't require corrections. Your suspension is released. Since your entries are relatively simple, I suggest running any complicated additions through the thread before adding them to the wiki so you don't get dinged for grammar issues again.

~R Alexa21th 33138

Right. Then please limit the hyperbole, and aim for constructive posts. You may go.

~Konacha 33139

That is correct. Your suspension is released. Happy troping!

~Will 426 [1], [2]

Yep, you got them. You've shown you know how to make links and how to resolve editing disputes and where those rules are found, so that's great. Please use the Preview button to check formatting before submitting edits. There's some iffy grammar in places, so be vigilant there, too. Your suspension is released.

~Babishka 33145

You understand the mechanisms of an edit war. Can you list some venues of discussion so you can avoid any more edit wars?

~Kingslayer 38 33147

Please read Edit War and tell us (in your own words) the options you can take if you disagree with an edit and want to reinstate yours. We also have a policy on complaining edits.

~Comrade Tom 33148

If you suspect that doing something will get you in trouble, you probably shouldn't do it. Thank you for being self aware, but we'd really like for this funny business to not recur. Mind our Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment policy, and stay firmly on Caution's side. Is that clear?

~Salixshiraii 33149

Welcome. Your suspension was for problems with Example Indentation, not just any format issue. You were repeatedly putting lone lower-level bullet points in AwesomeMusic.Stardew Valley, and that's not allowed.

Can you read up on Edit War and list some routes you can take to avoid committing one in the future?

~F Gonzalez 33150

You have not been posting in Get Help With English as was asked. You can also practice writing examples with context by posting there. Please post some entries on Get Help With English and listen to the helpers' responses to you.

~Tropers/MM_Crusader 33153

Indeed. Your longer entries still required corrections in places, so I recommend continuing to use GHWE for more complex write-ups, to ensure your examples are good before adding them to the wiki. Your suspension is released.

~Rhino Beloved 2 33154

Correct, but can you tell us, based on what you learn from TLP Guidelines, what the requirements for trope launch are? It's a bit of a read, so take your time if you need.

~Tropers/rwinger24 33155

That's a lot of thumps for dwelling on the same off-topic topic. There is no timer — you get your posting privileges back when we're convinced that you understand the rules and state you will follow them. Since you have said you will, you are unsuspended.

~Freecom 33156

Hi, nothing to do with your recent edits. You were suspended for edits to your contributer page back in October (which should've gotten you in some trouble months ago, but the page didn't come to our attention until recently). Tropers/ is a page under your name, but it's still readable by anyone, so it's not a free-for-all. Moreover, the commentary indicated you were aware that the addition was inappropriate and submitted it anyway. You should not do that, and continue to not do that in the future.

Adding an edit reason when creating a new edit would be a way to justify my changes (which I had actually done in the past, back when doing edits on the Paripi Koumei pages), and if that's not enough, I can use the discussion threads to talk about why it's necessary, which I haven't actually used as of yet.

Okay, it seems I misunderstood what the issue was to begin with. In my mind, there was some simple formatting problem going on. Actually, I was not properly aware of, and violating, the Example Indentation rules, and this was specified in one of the messages, which I should have read more carefully.

Regarding Example Indentation, I understand since then that single bullet points are not allowed. For example:

  • This is a top level bullet with an example in it.
    • This is a second level bullet with another example, which is wrong.

  • Instead this is a top level bullet with the theme of the examples.
    • This is the first example.
    • This is the second example.

In order to avoid an Edit War, I could/should have read each message to me carefully and responded to the people sending them. At least one of these spelled out the problem in detail. It would have cleared up the misunderstanding. It would also have been more polite and collaborative. Instead, I perceived them as standard "fix this" notices and frantically kept editing back to what I intended to output. And this behaviour constitutes an Edit War, even if I didn't think that was what I was doing.

So, going forward:

  • Read messages from other editors carefully.
  • Respond to the messages, even just to acknowledge what they've said.
  • If I'm having an issue, talk to other editors to clear it up, either in messages or in the discussion page.

As said, I was under the impression I was supposed to defend myself and give my side of the story. As said at the time, I genuinely believed the notifiers I had been sent were personally written messages that users had sent to me, having chosen the specific wording by themselves, meaning the simple, statement-like tone of the messages came off as blunt and rude. Again, I am now aware this is not the case, but at the time I genuinely believed I was being sent rude, dismissive, hostile messages by other users, but nobody felt the need to do anything about them. As said, before anything else, I wanted to be clear on if the way I was treated was actually allowed, since I was being pulled up for rudeness yet I felt that I wasn't the only one who had been rude here (but again, I am now aware that was NOT the case).

And it wasn't that I didn't think an apology would be accepted, it was the belief that only saying the words 'I'm sorry' and nothing more would've seemed disingenuous. It's not a case of 'you guys wouldn't believe me', it's a case of 'I wouldn't believe that either', hence my apology in my previous message being as clear as possible on the matter and my clarified understanding of it. If a person has their permissions removed and comes here and ONLY says 'I'm sorry', it's not something that'd be accepted since they haven't proven they understand their error. Thus I originally tried to give my side of the story but, as said, I wasn't exactly aware of what was actually happening.

Honestly I think there's just been a LOT of confusion and miscommunication here on what was supposed to be done and what was actually said.

Wait, redircets aren't allowed anymore? If that is the case then why do so many pages have them? I'll tell you why! To fit the context of the situation. Does it really matter what it says as long as it takes you to the same destination? I told Twiddler about this as well, by the way. And while I do want to appeal, I also find it unfair to know that was the reason my editing privileges were suspended. Besides, if you don't want people to use the redirects then you shouldn't have put them there in the first place! It is a bit contradicting if you ask me.
