Not Quite Batman
I still remember the first time I saw the logo for Despicable Me.
I'm still disappointed that the silohuette was neither Alfred Hitchcock nor the Penguin.

Darker and Edgier Superman expies are overdone. Metro Man promises to be not D&A. I hope.

This is still a signature.^^^ Woah, woah, woah, Robbie Rotten, slow down. Rotten Tomatoes, harshist reveiw site EVER, gave it a POSITIVE review? That's it. I'm watching Despicable Me. Full stop.
YOU! OBEY THE FIST!Despicable Me, after seeing the more recent trailers for it, looks very promising to me. Come on, it's about an evil genius mastermind, his rivalry, his plans for ludicrous acts of larceny, and... his family life.
How can you not love this?
Meanwhile, what I saw of Mega Mind made me seriously dislike the character from the start, so I'm not really looking forward to it. Maybe future trailers will help.
Sakamoto demands an explanation for this shit.Loove your new avatar Goggle Fox!
Back to the debate... Mega Mind looks awful. It just... Does.
YOU! OBEY THE FIST!Had to look up the trailer for Mega Mind, I had not even heard of it (whereas Despicable Me clearly had a monstrous advertising budget).
I have decently high hopes for Despicable Me just because, well, mediocre comedies tend to cram all of the funny moments into the trailers. Despicable Me has kept on cranking out more and more ads with more and more funny moments. I also like the fact that its evil geniuses are clearly very competent instead of the now-cliche Dr. Evil style of bumbling mad scientist.
Loved it. Over the top Card Carrying Evil meets worldwide Serious Business. The movie lampoons the idea of "bitter guy adopts kids" idea while simultaneously playing it adorably straight. Nice.
I think the perfect sequel to this would be a years later with an aging Gru and his daughters as a hilariously evil villainous family (the anti-Incredibles). I'm still disappointed there weren't more gags about how easily the girls took to being a supervillain's daughters, or a final scene of a cut to them doing some "family activity" that involved stealing the real Eiffel Tower.

Watched Despicable me. I laughed so hard I knocked out a contact. How that works I don't know but its true. It's not the best move evar but it's still more enjoyable then the vast majority of "serious" movies.
I'm a little ambivalent about going to see Mega Mind. On the one hand there promises to be a great story. On the other hand Will Ferrell. Meh, I'll probably squeeze it into my movie schedule anyway.
Despicable Me was FREAKING AWESOME!
I laughed so damned much this morning.
I loved the minions. They remind me of the Tron Bonne's Servbots so very much.
I dunno, I didn't feel like they derailed Gru's character.
With all the flashbacks to his childhood, it felt like a natural progression of character development.
The more time he spent with the girls, the more he thought about his own childhood and how it shaped his life. I think he also bonded with the girls at least partially by seeing how they dealt with their hardships in a very independent way. Similar to how he dealt with his mother never paying attention to him, but he would carry on regardless.
He bonded with them and started to genuinely care about them.
..and they were bloody adorable, to boot.

Finally saw it and I enjoyed it, but I think it needed another round or two with the writing-polish. I didn't mind the mostly-predictable plot, but Gru's ice-thawing towards the girls was a little abrupt and felt almost like an Informed Ability IMO. I also think it'd have been funnier if the girls had adapted to some of Gru's mindset and did some villainy of their own near the end.
Still, pretty good overall. I liked it more than Shrek 4, but that's not saying much...
