It actually makes a certain amount of sense why Ishtar would be able to calm Humbaba down so I like this development more than it being Edison, which was a bizarre idea. The only issue I suppose I have is this means Humbaba will be written by Narita from here on out. There's a certain baseline amount of personality that she already has but I don't really trust Narita's character writing. Much like how I think Apo's take on Karna was not nearly as good as he was in CCC.

“Grail Tournament? What a load of crap. It’s just a game, right? It’s all just make-believe. I’ll never understand what enjoyment people get out of turning Servants into an exhibition. Don’t the fighters know they’re just being turned into commodities to bring more spectators to the show? We twist the ideas they held dear and lay them out for everyone to see, and we trivialise the skills they spent their entire lifetimes perfecting – how can that be ok? Servants aren’t meant to be our slaves!

Maybe the people in the stands feel like they’re fighting alongside the competitors, but that only lasts until they get bored and find something else. How are they supposed to understand how the Servants in the arena feel from behind a safety barrier?”

“How dare you make fun of something people are serious about.

You can call it an exhibition or a farce all you want, but the people who’re in the arena, the people who’re actually there – they’re putting everything they’ve got into making it entertaining for us. Even the Servants – you think they get through to the final rounds just by doing what they’re told? Of course not. What are you trying to say, that nothing’s important unless people are dying? That without the impact of kingdoms falling or ages ending, it’s all just some kind of childish joke? That the kinds of jobs people wrote about in that human history you love so much are the only ones worth doing?”

The only way this can get more meta is if the tournament battles were directly set up to look like FGO's

“Otaku” was a term for a group of people from the pre-war world, most notable for their unique brand of thinking, creativity and consumerist culture. The influence this exerted over their daily activities and lifestyles was far too great to dismiss as a simple hobby. Their culture had spread far and wide, and for a time they could be found all across the world world in various guises, but as a faction they had held next to no political power. Eventually they had fallen into decline, almost taking pleasure in their irrelevance – my master’s words, mind you, not mine.
ok meteo this is too much

[up]Well, he's not exactly wrong.

I'd question the creativity part: Otaku are one of the most stale-minded folks on planet Earth.

If there's thing otaku are good at, it's taking pleasure in self-deprecation.

I appreciate military otaku like Mizushima and vn otaku like Nasu because they made the shows that I like, made their universes really large, and characters really entertaining.

Now that I think about it, should spoilers for the Fate and Unlimited Blade Works routes, along with the servant identifies remain unmarked? Because I expect most of them to know about those things already.

It depends on the Servant. Lancer's identity is revealed pretty early on, and Gil doesn't even bother to hide who he is, but Archer's is a major reveal and a pretty big spoiler.

Has Fate reached the point where it can go all meta on itself like an X-Men story can dumbly say “All X-Men stories are the same”?

How old is this franchise?

I wonder what being a Fate fan was like before the Zero anime came out and the series exploded in popularity.

Speaking of Case Files, the volume 2 translation's been resumed at a regular pace yay, Waver's finally made his appearance to investigate all the crime

For example, as a certain emperor attempted in his quest for immortality, the imbibing of mercury isn't actually wrong per se, but if it isn't done with a body built the same way as the stars, then it will just become poison.
I wonder if this bit of LORE was conceptualized before or after they decided to tackle the lostbelts and mothman

also lmao at Uro's last bit for this interview section

Q: Going back to Case Files, Sanda, what are Fate Stay Night and Fate Zero to Case Files?

Sanda: Zero showed for the first time "People other than Nasu Kinoko can write the Type-Moon world" in other words, "you can write it too." To compare it to the Bible, Fate Stay Night is the old Testament and Fate Zero is the New Testament. Case Files is written to be read independently. Knowing the main outline for stay night and Zero will give you 90% of the in-jokes is how I wrote it. They're foundational.

Q: So there are a lot of people who are reading Case Files after completing Fate/Stay Night.

Sanda: No, now, there are probably a many people who know El-Melloi II from FGO rather than Fate/Stay Night. Also, I believe because of the anime there is a not an insignificant amount of people who know the outline of stay night.

Urobuchi: I thought that Fate/Zero was a story you couldn't understand without playing Fate/Stay Night. Surprisingly there are people coming to Fate through Fate/Zero. However, because it's a story that plays with the spoilers of Fate/Stay Night, unless you read stay night first there is a lot presented you won't understand or identify. That's why for a while I declined allowing anyone but Type-moon books to publish it.

Zero showed for the first time "People other than Nasu Kinoko can write the Type-Moon world" in other words, "you can write so where's it too."

So where's Arha to say "No, you fucking can't" and shit on anything not Nasu-written?

He’s not wrong

It’s funny they say that, because realtalk, Zero was the closest to staying thematically to Nasu’s vision at the time and most non Nasu competent spinoff

And still it’s a source of original sin, the Marvelization of Type Moon. Which tbf, was there from the beginning, but it’s a legitimate complaint about neo Type Moon.

Oh of course, I’m not shitting on you, it’s okay to enjoy what you want, and I know you’re don’t intend in bad will

I’m just thinking about my observations about Type Moon’s and Nasu’s direction creativity. The cosmology was always there and Nasu is infamous for tying things back to stuff from the beginning.

I believe Zero is the most accessible of the Fate works to a general audience.

I'm pretty sure I sold my 40-50 year old Cuban uncle who does not have any interest in anime on it by virtue of "good special effects, good characters, & good stories."

I mean I already sold him on Death Note & Baki, I'm sure I can do it for the show where a black knight hijacks a fighter jet mid-air.

See that image is now so ubiquitous that nobody actually wants to do anything else with Lancelot's abilities because f a n s e r v i c e

which is 45% of my problems with Zero and its interactions with the greater franchise

I feel like that’s something you should blame everyone else for instead of Zero.

Alright I’ll mention a less cliche cool thing........ uhhhhhhh Alexander the Great getting into a jousting match with a motorcycle riding King Arthur.

It was the show that truly cemented the Fate franchise into the Weeb scene, after all.

Not that Fate wasn't already popular before, but the DEEN anime is shit and had it been the only animated adaptation the franchise would fall into relative obscurity by now.

I mean, how many people even know what Tsukihime is even about, really?

Edit: I still think Lancelot's greatest moment was his first fight with Gil.

The jet thing was cool, but that first moment caught me with my pants down.
