Yep. People have seen meaning in my works and I'm just like: Wow... That's pretty amazing....yes, of course, I TOTALLY meant that awesome deeper meaning to that character. Planned it all along...yes...

There are varying levels of furry. It is only if you don't hit the level of uwu owo and twt. You're just not that type of furry, but you are still a furry. There are varying investment levels for each person on how deep they want to get into it. You are no less or no more than anyone else just because you choose to go as deep or as shallow as you want within the fandom. Your interest in it is still valid.
I've been into Mature Animal Story works as of late, it seems. I liked Penguin Memories and am currently reading Maus, which is also really good. I plan to watch Fritz the Cat next.
Does anyone have any personal favorites of this genre they would like to recommend?
Reindeer in the direction of reindeerBeastars is a great read if you can get a hold of the manga, and the first season of the anime's available to watch on Netflix, too. It's apparently technically in the shonen demographic, but the tone and themes are plenty mature without ever feeling gratuitous, some of the characters like Louis's melodrama aside.
I haven't personally played it, but the story being told in Tooth and Tail is pretty good. Gameplay's half decent, too from what I've seen.

It's technically aimed at kids, but Watership Down is also really good as far as 'dark and mature' is concerned. It genuinely captures how scary it would be to be a prey animal like a rabbit.
>^owo^<Thanks for the recommendations. Sorry if this is weird but I have another question.
Is there a term/subgenre of furries for people who enjoy military and war themed/set stories with anthropomorphics? The term "military furries" already refers to furries who have served in the military in real life, which isn't what I seek.
Reindeer in the direction of reindeerQuick question: should my characters even have tails?
I mean, I always tend to imagine them being tailless and often forget to draw them. And to be honest, they might seem more like stylized humans without them. My work isn't completely about being furry, and it's really somewhat of a way to get around face blindness and make them more easily recognizable as characters.
she/her/they | wall | sandboxIf you feel like it's obligatory to put the tails on, don't feel like you have to. In Sherlock Hound they all didn't have tails, and still looked very furry.

Does anyone else ever feel "not furry enough"?
I like anthro stuff, and I love fursuits and they're what got me into furry. But I seem to be drawn to human characters just as much if not more so than anthros. Also I think a lot of furry culture is cringe (like the uwu owo smol floof stuff) so I have trouble finding people like me through furry as opposed to other general interests and hobbies.
I enjoy anthro character designs but honestly I think I mostly consider myself a furry because I want to wear a mascot costume. I don't really "feel" like a furry
