Purveyor of Obscurity
#11351: Nov 26th 2010 at 9:08:03 AM

-The rising sun's light blazes across the mountainside, reflecting off the weapons both ceremonial and functional held at ready by the Imperials and Gensokyoans.

The roar of jet engines drowns out the buzz of the assembled crowds before descending in volume to a gentle roar.

Far above, the Spear of Benediction is locked in hovering formation above the white clouds, not unlike a nimbus itself in it's grey and red greatness.

Amongst the assembled soldiers are the seven hundred and fifty one Steel Judicators, in full regalia, badges of repentence centuries old set next to fresh green and gold aquila brooches. Chapter Master Zolomon stands with them, caped and helmed, head bowed, a ceremonial sabre sheathed at his side.-

Regiments of Imperial Guardsmen stand at attention, their ceremonial uniforms creating a great sea of colour. Although some may feel uncomfortable standing still for so long, not a single one shifts a centimetre, looking the spitting image of professionalism. A few medals adorn some of the uniforms, while others lay bare; nonetheless, their solemness despite the occasion is palpable. One or two Commissars are standing nearby, seeming to eye their fellows with a feeling of pride. It is almost as though somebody had taken toy soldiers and put them in place, adjusting them until their positions were just so.

Arcturus was standing by himself near one of the temporarily placed command pavilions, near the elevated makeshift podium where someone was eventually bound to make a speech for the purpose of making the planet's inauguration official. As the Inquisitor wasn't exactly keen on making himself even more of a publicly recognizable figure than he already is, he had politely refused when asked to be the one to make the speech. Some of the regimental officers and other command staff were confused at this decision, as the Inquisitor had already had an extremely hands-on role in this crusade, but his mind was set: he wished to remain out of sight.

He'd picked a nice spot, with a good view of the entire procedure, not easily noticed by the crowd. He never ceased to be impressed by the sheer amount of boots the Guard could get on ground in such short order: five regiments, about three to four thousand troopers each. Nearly twenty thousand men deployed, not counting the masses of tengu and kappa amongst other groups of locals gathered to view the occasion, not to mention over two thirds of the entire Steel Judicators chapter, standing completely still at attention like so many eight feet tall armoured statues. The indigines, Arcturus noticed, were generally speaking not quite as ordered and quiet as the meticulously drilled soldiery, and most of them, IE those with the ability to do so, had taken to flying in order to get a better view.

The mountain itself provided a spectacular backdrop for the occasion. The rugged terrain, lush vegetation and waterfalls was as stunning as the display going on at the mountain's feet. They'd picked a good spot for this ceremony. Elevation for whoever was making the declaration, and a lot of open ground for such a large amount of people to be able to stand in formation.

Heh. Even a blank would be able to sense the general mood here...

The area is teeming with Youkai. Rumours travelled fast in Gensokyo, especially when Tengu were involved in the rumour being spread. Tengu, Kappa, Fairies, Humans and other Youkai float around the general area. Yamame has woven herself a web-platform in the trees, and is laughing together with Kisume at a joke. The Lunarians are sharing a pavilion with Ran and her Shikigami, although Yukari does not seem to be present. Remilia and Sakuya were standing near Arcturus, the young vampire looking as regal as possible in one of her mother's old dresses. Surprisingly, Patchouli has ventured outside her Library to bear witness to the event. Yuyuko is sitting in the air, drinking tea, Youmu floating next to her in the air. Yuugi is having a drink together with the Tengu chieftain in the air, and Ichirin and Iku keep an eye on it all from above.

Byakuren takes a deep breath, bracing herself. She was not used to her new position yet, and this was to be her first time acting as the Governor of Gensokyo. Shou smiles at her, noticing the priestess' nervousness, and Byakuren smiles back.

Here we go, Shou.

Yes, lady Byakuren.

Standing at the tip top of a tree was the tengu most responsible for word spreading fast, Aya. She already had her camera out and was taking pictures of everyone getting ready. She had her notepad in her other hand in preparation for the speech. Chen seemed to have cheered up considerably since the fighting ended. Now she was trying to catch a butterfly that was close to where her mistress was seated. The butterfly landed on her nose, causing the cat girl to go cross-eyed. Flandre was standing with her sister, also wearing one of their mother's old dresses. She was doing her best to behave and act professional, but the temptation to look over the huge crowd was eating at her. Shes never seen so many people in one place before. Koakuma was with her mistress Patchouli as always, holding a selection of books for her mistress just in case. Suika sat high up on the cliff side, drinking for her gourd and chuckling to herself. Kanako and Suwako stood with their shrine maiden, watching over the proceedings silently. The trained eye might be able to catch a purple umbrella moving through the crowd, but upon a second glance it was gone.

-Somewhere within the ranks and files of gaurdsmen stands the Imperial Gaurd half of Squad Hakurei accomponied by Reimu who stands somewhat anxiously next to Zentel, his missing arm now replaced with a bionic substitute with an equipped powerfist.-

-Sedna takes her place alongside Yuugi and Suika among the crowd alongside Daiyousi and a few fairy spectators.-

-Alice, her arm still in a sling, stands next to Marisa in the crowd, feeling more at ease.-

-The massive space marine stoops slightly, bowing his helmed head, then puts the ceremonial weapon forward-

This Is The Beginning Of A New Age For The World Of Gensokyo Primaris, And Of The Imperium Of Man. In The Name Of His Divine Majesty The Emperor, We Would Make This World A Part Of His Fold. To Lend Arms And Wealth Through, That We Will Be One In Prosperity And Righteousness.

-The sheath of the sabre slides back an inch with a metallic clack, revealing it to be a powered device; Zolomon lowers the sabre resting atop his hands gently down to Byakuren's level-

This Is The Symbol Of Your Office, Mamzelle Byakuren Hijiri. It Is Yours To Lead With, To Defend And Execute The Laws And Governance Of This World, Unyielding To Those Who Would Subvert His Will And Your Own. Do You Accept It, And The Inclusion Of Your World Into Ours, Guided By Your Hand?

Gensokyo has much to thank the Imperium for, and owes it a great favour. But Gensokyo is not one person.

Byakuren looks past Zolomon to the amassed Youkai that are watching the event from every tree, every spot of grass, every branch and every empty room of sky.

Do you accept Gensokyo joining the Imperium?

There is silence for a while...then there is a cheering, whistling, and distant howling of consent. For a moment, some Oni pick up a "Space Marines, Space Marines, Space Marines"-chant, but they are hushed back down.

Do you accept me as your Governor?

Another roar arises, this one even louder than the previous one.

"BYAKUREN! BYAKUREN! BYAKUREN!"

Byakuren smiles and turns back to Zolomon.

Gensokyo and I accept.

The Priestess takes the sword and scabbard with both hands and holds it up high for all to see, to the applause and cheering of the crowd.

Arcturus watches in silence. It wasn't a long ceremony, but events of this kind didn't need to be. The effect on the crowd was obvious enough, and he was quite sure this display would help strengthen Gensokyo/Imperial relations.

He smiles, showing a little teeth. It was a calculating expression, nothing malignant, but still felt a little at odds with the celebratory mood.

If it was made official earlier, now the deal has been fully sealed, in the minds of both the troops and the populace.

The smile widens by a fraction.

We're all in it together, now. We'll see where this eventually takes us.

Isaiah didn't say anything, but then again he didn't really need to - actions spoke louder than words. It still was rather jarring how they had come to the planet as destroyers, and were now here as saviours.

Fate was rather odd in that respect, if he had to be honest with himself. When he was still a Cadet Commissar, he would never have dreamt that he would fight a Chaos Space Marine and live, nor would he have believed that when he was older he would be commanding a Baneblade, that most awe-inspiring of Imperial armour.

For now, however, he realised that if he were to keep this planet safe, he must become ever more vigilant, and ever more unyielding. If his history were any indication, he felt that he would be up to the job. He involuntarily smiled as he saw the Indigene take the ceremonial sword of office.

"Go get 'em." he whispered quietly. He then turned to face his Imperial Guardsmen, having already given them the order to come to attention.

"REGIMENTS!" he bellowed. "RAISE ARMS!"

The regiments under his command neatly brought their weapons up to their shoulders in a two part movement, the guns clacking quietly as the touched cloth and metal. Each weapon was either equipped with blanks or set to an extremely low power setting as they pointed into the sky.

"ON MY MARK, FIRE!" roared Graille, and an orderly yet cacaphonic noise resounded around the impromptu parade ground as the Imperial Guardsmen fired in unison. The sombre mood of earlier had evaporated, and though they didn't show it, each man was jubilant. After they had finished firing, Graille yelled another order: "REGIMENTS! LOWER ARMS!"

The earlier process was now repeated in reverse. "REGIMENTS! STAND AT EASE!" Now there was a slightly less well-timed clatter as the soldiers dropped to their "at ease" stances.

That's a job well fucking done, my boys. he thought.

The assembled Youkai applaud the salute and cheer. But they've come prepared as well, and the Youkai flying above get out of the way as several of them reach for their Spell Cards. The area flashes with the declaration of Spell Cards, and then waves of danmaku fly into the air. Danmaku of all colours and shapes flash across the sky as the natives fire off their own kind of salute.

There is no order or coordination between the separate Youkai. But the various intricate patterns blend in with each other across the sky, making a wonderful improvised fireworks-display. Lasers stab across the sky, and orbs and discs fly up through the clouds of minor danmaku. Remilia turns to Patchouli, and exchanges nods with her. Patchouli takes one of the tomes from Koakuma, and recites a new spell prepared for the occasion.

Light Sign: Gensokyo Flare

As the other Danmaku dies down, a great globe of light flashes into being in the sky. It splits into countless other globes in different colours and they are spread across the area. Finally, they turn into different emblems and sigils in bursts of danmaku. Every tribe-sign and clan-emblem in Gensokyo is represented and the Youkai present cheer. Finally, two larger globes fly up high. One of them turns into a large red-and-gold ball, glowing like a second sun in the sky. And positioned just below it, so that the red light shines through it, the final black globe turns into the sign of the Aquila.

Arcturus gives Remilia and Patchouli a surprised look, but nods at them in approval all the same. Welcome to the Imperium.

-Chapter Master Zolomon turns to his battle brothers-

JUDICATORS! DISPLAY COLOURS!

-There is a colossal, jubilant roar as the statuesque Marines finally move, firing their bolters skyward, silver and red fireworks joining in with the danmaku and lasfire, the sky set afire with the second sun of the combined weaponsfire-

-Saul Locke stood near the front of the assembled Marines. No cheer issued from his lips. He did not fire into the air in jubilation; if this had been any other occasion, he would have been bellowing at them for wasting valuable ammunition. He simply stood there, unmoving. Slowly, and without any ceremony, he moved to make a salute in the direction of the new Governess. Nothing in it betrayed any emotion. The Scout Commander's movements were stoic and formal. His cybernetic eyes could not show any feeling. His face settled in a frozen mask of blankness. A small, almost imperceptible smile appeared on his face-

-Saul was possibly the oldest marine in the Chapter. All the Marines currently in service had been under his supervision at one point or another. He was known to have a well defined, and sometimes vicious, sense of humour. He'd been seen smiling or laughing many times over the past centuries. But anyone who knew him well would be able to tell you that that single moment was different, somehow-

-Saul was, for the first time in a very long time, genuinely happy-

Lord Yuuma Shikyutei looks out the window from the temporary settlement, studying Gensokyo from afar. It looks so small now, he thinks to himself, but if his messengers were to be believed, Gensokyo had not changed much. It had been if not spared, then later cleansed of its Tyranid taint. Whereas the Moon...had been purged. There were few Lunarians that managed to look at the craters where the Lunarian Capital once had been without misting over. Lord Shikyutei shared their sentiments, and their bitter resentment towards the Gensokyoians. The heathen ruffians had allied with the Imperials, and with what he had managed to glean from the Tau, they would enter the Imperium of Man soon. Humans...Lord Shikyutei denies a scowl from racing across his face again. He was glad it was it not the Imperium of Man that had come to the Moon, but the Tau. Not that the Tau seemed any less the invaders considering the terms they were proposing...

Amami visited me yesterday.

Lord Shikyutei's thoughts snap back to the present, and he turns to the other Lunarian in the room, Lord Shichirou Dorakukei. The young High Noble is in his second-best kimono, but it looks like he has been sleeping in it again. He probably had too, if Lord Shikyutei's contacts were to be trusted. Between the two of them it's Lord Shikyutei, with his once-beautiful black coat and hat with a raven's feather, that looks like the highest ranked between them. But no one could blame Lord Dorakukei in his grief. Had it been Lord Shikyutei in the young noble's position, he would have been grieving the loss of position Shichirou had lost over the course of the war. The loss of the most powerful family-name in hundreds of years, the loss of the position as Lunarian Prince. Watatsuki no Shichirou-miya was a thing of the past...but the poor fool still cried himself to sleep over the loss of his wife, Watatsuki no Toyohime.

Captain Amami? Did she not call upon you three days ago as well?

Lord Dorakukei smiles, and sips the strange drink the Tau supplied them with from a bland cup.

Not Captain any more, Yuuma. She is a Colonel now, by Tau suggestion. She no longer requires my position to enter my quarters.

Lord Shikyutei furrows his brow. A Colonel?! There hadn't been a Rabbit Colonel in the entire history of the Moon! Of course, the young captain deserved a reward for her job well done, but a Colonel?! Surely, a Major should have been enough...

Does she like her new position?

Oh yes, very well. She's looking forward to when the reconstruction effort really begins, she says. All the Lunar Rabbits are.

Lord Shikyutei nods. At least the Rabbits still knew their positions in these troubled times. Pets should stay pets, in his eyes.

I see...did she have any news to share?

Apparently, the Tau have suggested her to govern the Lunarians under Tau supervision.

Lord Shikyutei can not help but scowl this time. He had heard already, he did not bury his head in the dust like Shichirou did, but the idea still galled. A Lunar Rabbit over all of the other nobles! It was madness! But there was one stroke of luck.

But she refused, oddly enough. She said to me that she did not like the idea of all the power.

More like she feared poison in her feed, Lord Shikyutei thinks to himself. Even though her old master was the other former Watatsuki prince, the other High Nobles would not support her.

But then again, I refused as well. I...well, with...I just couldn't...

Lord Shikyutei pats his friend's arm kindly.

You do not have to push yourself, dear friend. People understand.

Shichirou smiles openly through misty eyes, too openly to suit a High Noble in truth.

I will support you, you know.

Lord Shikyutei smiles. The Tau did not discriminate between High or lesser nobles, and for the moment, Lord Shikyutei was the noble with the most support. Once, he had just been the single heir to the Master of the Noble Shikyutei Archery Grounds, but now...he could go far. He would go far. The Tyranid invasion and Tau restoration would bring one good thing with it; him reaching the position of Governor of the Moon. And then...his goals would be within reach.

Thank you, old friend.

-Later that night, in the outskirts of the forest, Squad Hakurei has thrown themselves a party celebrating Gensokyo finally returning to peace. All around their campsite, Tyranid trophy heads are impaled upon spears and spikes that are used as fenceposts, tent pegs and even a flag pole. Outside of the tents, there is the corpse of a Genestealer broodlord being used as tinder for a bonfire. A lone gaurdsman keeps watch over the camp at the gate to the makeshift spear-fence. Inside the CO's where Reimu stays while her shrine is repaired, the others are drinking, laughing, and generally enjoying each other's company.-

Zentel: ...and then the Commissar says "That's no Genestealer, that's my wife!"

-The air is filled with the jovial laughter from the various warriors.-

Gal'zin: Oh that was wonderful Zentel. Tell us again about the man from Valhalla.

Zentel: In a minute, Reimu says she has a message for us.

Reimu: Thank you Zentel. If I could have everyone’s attention, I’d like to say a few words.

-The chatter amongst the others slowly dies down.-

Reimu: Thank you. As I've been told, for untold centuries the Imperium of Man and the Tau Empire haven't been on the friendliest of terms. Countless times the two have fought each other over petty territorial issues, Ideological disagreements, and even simply because the other exists. Throughout all of your lives, you've been told and taught to hate and kill each other, that the other side was filled with ruthless barbarians incapable of coexisting with you...

But then the Tyranids came, along with the other forces who invaded Gensokyo. On that day when I found you in the valley, you were surrounded on all sides by an enemy set on consuming not just you, but this whole world. And you all put aside your differences and fought bravely against the ever increasing odds. And for that, I thank you.

Over the past few weeks I've come to know all of you, and from the time since that day when this special squad was formed I've learned that deep down, you are all a decent upstanding fellows just doing their part to help your kind to survive in a universe with no sense of mercy or rules. Part of me wishes that Gensokyo was still sealed off so that we wouldn't have had to deal with the byproducts of that uncaring Universe, but then I remember that otherwise I would never have met Arcturus, Zolomon, and all of you fine people who seem to embody the more... desirable parts of your respective factions.

Thanks in no small part to you all, Gensokyo is safe once again and peace has been restored. You all were a great help in the cleanup effort.

Gal'zin: Are you kidding? We barely did anything!

Zentel: Yeah, The best we managed to kill were a few Gaunt broods and a single Dactylus, and just barely at that. You took down the Frakkin' SWARMLORD.

Reimu: ...With some help from some friends in high places. And don't be modest, that Dactylus is still a friggin' huge beast if I remember right. Be proud of yourselves for that.

-Reimu stands up from her seat.-

Reimu: I must say that its been an honor and a privilige to fight alongside all of you. I wish you luck in your future endeavors. As of now Anti-Tyranid squadron Hakurei has been officially disbanded.

-Groans and confused whispers eminate from the troops.-

Reimu: I know, I know. But I've managed to convince your superiors to let the Gaurdsman stay on Gensokyo while the Tau stay on the moon if you all so desire. I'm proud to say that I was your leader against the Bugs. As my final command, I want you to remember this:

No matter where you go, no matter who you fight, no matter what anyone tells you, always remember that Humans and Tau CAN work together. Always remember your teammates and how you all faced down the Tyranids standing as one.

-Reimu motions to Gal'zin-

Reimu: Whether you face down the more zealous members of the Imperium…

-Motions to Zentel-

Reimu: …Or the Tau empire, remember these past weeks. Remember that you can get along with each other. And remember your teammates that you served with on this planet and that if nothing else, you both have a common enemy.

Zentel: Uhhhh… yeah. But We’d also like ‘’you’’ to remember that if any Commissar hears about this (especially Fuklaw, -Shudder-), we’ll get executed on the spot.

Reimu: I remember, and I’m not asking you to get yourselves over what I say, I just want you to keep your memories of Gensokyo in mind when they badmouth the Tau you might fight against. You don’t have to speak of this to anyone tonight, (in fact I encourage you ‘’not’’ to), just remember. Now then...

-Reimu walks to the exit of the tent and stops.-

Reimu: I’ll probably see you all tomorrow before you start to ship out. But until then, may the Emperor and the Greater Good be with you all.

All: And also with you.

Reimu: I’m gonna go out for a little walk to think about a few things. You all keep partying without me. See ya.

-And with that, the shrine maiden walks out of the tent, leaving an odd silence behind.-

Gal’zin: Soooooooooooo…. Who wants to play “Pin the tail on the Krootox?

-Before heading out the gate, Reimu sees the lone young Gaurdsman standing watch.-

Reimu: Joe? What are you doing out here all alone?

-The young guardsman known as Joseph Abell turned towards Reimu. He was the youngest of the Imperial Guard recruits sent to aid in the Gensokyo crusade, his age approximately between eighteen and his mid twenties.-

Joseph: Commander Hakurei, Ma’am! I was just keeping watch for enemy troops.

-Reimu sighed and shook her head.-

Reimu: Joe, the war’s over. The Tyranids have ran off, The Necrons are gone, and the Chaos guys have been crushed. There’s no danger out here.

Joseph: B-but…

Reimu: No buts! I know you Joe, I know how loyal you are to the Imperium and how eager you are to defend it. But there's nothing left to fight. Gensokyo's at peace now and we've already cleaned up the rest of the Tyranids. Now get in that tent, have yourself a drink, and party till the dawn with the others. That’s an order!

-Joseph looked down at his lasrifle for a moment, then looks back up at his Commanding Officer.-

Joseph: Y-yes Ma’am!

-Joseph quickly walks back to the tent.-

Reimu: Good lad.

-The shrine maiden leaves the campsite gate, and entered the forest.-

It goes well. The forest is regrowing at a steady pace, and Byakuren is already well under way with talking to the Kodama about what trees are to be used for rebuilding the villages, and of course your shrine. The Imperials will be shipping in the first engineers to assist pretty soon, though they'll just be rebuilding the Human Village to start with, seeing as it's...well, a crater. The Kappa will be helping out as well, they tell me.

She smiles again.

Soon I can go back to sleep. And what will you do, Reimu?

Reimu: I dunno really. The squaddies are shipping out tomorrow and soon and I'll move my tent closer to my shrine.

After my shrine's done I geuss I'll just stay here on Gensokyo.

I mean the opportunity to explore new worlds is very tempting, but I probably need to stay and help keep this place safe. After all, who knows what kind of horrors and unfriendly aliens could come visit us next?
