I saw a couple of arguments in favor of Varis after 4.5. there are legit people who thought he owned the Alliance leaders with facts and logic(TM) and even his trope page was filled with positive arguments for him, ignoring his very first scene in HW was him trying to genocide innocent bird people.
So even though Varis is a bastard, he did have a fanbase that was pretty loud when Zenos killed him
Solus isn't really a likeable sympathetic(Both terms I use lightly) imperialist villain like Gaius and Varis because that requires him to actually believe in Garlemald. Ha.

I'll give Varis this, he did agree to the meeting with the Eorzean Alliance leaders and didn't try anything dirty.
Granted unleashing chemical weapons outweighs that move. Regulus is the only Garlemald villain who genuinely comes off as an Anti-villain. It helps he wasn't trying to conquer anything, just secure anti-primal equipment.

We also killed lots of Garlean troops that were his comrades too, as he points out yet he was the bigger man and went to us for help.
Sure we could claim self defense for all those dead imperials but so could he when shooting Shiva. Credit to him, he did go down protecting a child.

A Famitsu interview with Yoshi P, and it does clarify some details. Thancred DID have romantic feelings for Minfilia but would have been okay albeit heartbroken a bit if Minfilia saw him as a brother among other details.

Other sources indicate, to the contrary, that that translation is inaccurate and Yoshida was very clear about Thancred's feelings not being romantic at all, and their relationship being a familial one.

Maybe it's been a while, but did Thancred view Ryne as a replacement goldfish at all? He gave her the name Ryne so she would be her own person, and he's clearly aware that Minfilia is a separate person from Ryne since he talked to the original one in the desert area.
His dynamic with Ryne wasn't a replacement goldfish, rather him being aware she isn't Minfilia despite the name and being conflicted over how either Minfilia has to go away forever or the child does. That's why he has a hard time connecting with Ryne initially and was cold.
Like whether or not Thancred viewed Minfilia as a sister or a love interest, it doesn't change that Ryne is the daughter Thancred never had.

Less seeing her as the same person and more, like... projecting his desire to protect the original Minfilia, which he ultimately felt he failed at, onto the child. While struggling with everything you said.

Okay, so for the sake of argument, let's say Thancred did have romantic feelings towards Minfilia. I don't think he'd project any romantic feelings towards Ryne and it would still come off as an adopted father daughter thing, even more so IMO in this case since again, he's aware Minfilia and Ryne are separate people.

I don't see what that problem is with Garlemald taking territory. The city-states of Eorzea and other nations all took land from others so taking land from other nations isn't really a bad thing. The main problem with Garlemald is their actions towards non-"pureblood" Garleans and outward faith yet there are plenty of leaders in Garlemald like Gaius and Regula who actually want to bring non-Garleans into the empire, make them equals and make sure all will prosper.
As for Varis he is a well-intentioned extremist as he views what he is doing is for the sake of the planet. Remember what he told Alphinaud "The fate of Eorzea pales in comparison to that of the world". He feels that what he is doing is the best course for humanity even though his goal is flawed. Also to say he is like the no.1 most hated human on Earth is rather wrong. Varis said that no race on Hydaelyn except their original unsundered bodies were ever perfect. The Garleans aren't perfect same with the Hyur, Au Ra, Miqote, etc. He felt the only way to defeat the Ascians is by regaining what they all lost. The only problem is that to do so will usher in great tragedies across the land and kill several amounts of people. Not mention that the people of the shards would be gone. But as shown by our fights with the Unsundered that Varis was right. We're rather lucky to have fought only 3 at separate times. One of whom lost his strength and mind due to constant body hopping, one was unsure of his path( kinda hoped he would fail) and the other one was only beat because we had help from another Ascian.
When was he likable? At most he might be KINDA a Well-Intentioned Extremist and even that is a serious stretch.
