I saw one girl who looked like the Diva from Fifth Element, but surprisingly my campus has surprisingly few character look alikes.

Halloween should be fun around here.

Oh, and I started a scavenger hunt for some Discordian group, but the second clue isn't up yet. I think. Maybe there is no second clue? That would be their style...

Question: Is anyone here a Communications and Media major?

Sorry, not one.

In other news, I hate college. Turns out I was on a waitlist for beginning art, and it's now full up so I'll have to hope that someone drops it by the end of next week. Argharghargh.

Hey, I'm in the same boat. Except for me the boat is actually three. I also have two classes in the same slot at the moment, but which one I take depends on me getting off a particular waitlist.

Ah. All right.

I love college. Everyone is nice to me here, I don't feel like a freak, and while class is a bit overwhelming, nothing a bit of desensitization can't handle.

Rising junior here.

Is there any point in taking the ACT along with the SAT, or is that just plain stupid?

Yes, because different colleges have a preference for one or the other. Generally, schools in the midwest and south want the ACT, and those on the East and West Coast want the SAT. Elite Colleges often want both, along with SAT Subject Tests.

The ACT isn't as skewed toward the verbal side as the SAT, so it's the easier test for some people, particularly those with a stronger science/math background.

Clarification: Elite colleges don't want you to take both tests, just one or the other. All colleges accept the ACT, in fact most of them are starting to favor it since the SAT is ridiculous. I'd say go ahead and take both.

A'right, thanks. I'm aiming for places like Duke, Oberlin, Wesleyan, Amherst, and Johns Hopkins. Hopefully an ACT score will help somewhat.

There is another advantage to taking the ACT over the SAT. When you take the ACT, you get to cherry-pick which scores you send to different colleges and universities (if you've taken it 4 times and got a 31, 32, 26, and 31, you can choose to not let colleges see the 26, for example). The SAT requires that if you send any scores to a college, the college gets to see all the scores.

Also, the SAT is supposedly a measure of 'general aptitude', while the ACT is designed to measure what you learned (or should have learned) in high school. And the ACT is 50% English based, not 66%, which is nice for the rare math person who wanders onto this site.

Finished my last few classes of my second undergraduate a few weeks ago. No more uni for me until I go for my masters, which will be at least two years, maybe more.

Awww yeah. cool

^^No, the SAT does super scoring. While you can send any scores to colleges, they're only going to consider the highest individual score for each category, and use those yo calculate your total.

ALSO:

HOLY FUCK CLASSES.

My schedule situation has also gotten interesting. Not as interesting as goddamned Doeherty Hall, but the math kids are nodding about it none the less.

Well, a lot of colleges will base the scores they use on the highest scores from each section. However, it would be invalid to assume that they all do.

And my point still stands (or at least, it did 3 years ago). I don't know if they've changed it since then.

Should take more loans to pay off the state for the class I dropped? I already have a job but I don't wanna wait too long.

So, my university just added a Sexuality and Queer Studies minor. There was already a Women's and Gender Studies...um...maybe major and minor, I'm not sure which. I am mentioning this...just because. I am not planning to minor in it. But I could certainly think of people I know who might, both at school and on this site.

In other news, this is my last day at home. I go back tomorrow.

^I would DEMAND a Straight White Man Studies class.

Speaking of classes, my situation seems mostly resolved. Still a little finageling, but only a little. I also don't have to go into a building eerily reminescent of my Highschool, although I still have a class in the freaking Hall on Ash Tree Lane.

ANYWAY. I'm off to work class in an hour. Hoping I can submit my six page story. I don't know if I have to double-space it or what.

[up] I was in the last year but after a lot of moaning and self-hatred I'm commited to saving and investing very carefully this year on, hopefully things won't go belly up....

....I've started talking about saving with my Dad, and he seems to be getting irritated. Dad doesn't have much sense about saving. He spoils my little brother, I mean really spoils him, and a little of it rubbed off on me at home this summer......I have to move on and not think about regretted spending. Dad thinks I'm foolish for becoming so worried about saving. I'm telling him not to let my brother keep getting every expensive little thing he wants and to cut down on the weekly shopping budget. The child support money and such we got when I was young is all gone.....I was allowed to be spoiled with it but mostly it went as €120 a week for Mom's cigarettes. Thousands a year completely gone. My parents, due to mental/physical disabilty and age, have always been unemployed and depended on supports. I'm coming to the realization I was bad last year....If I can't get Dad to be more pennywise, I hope to be okay at College.....although now I will have a couple of extra expenses. I should really push Dad more to give me money for College, it will be better in my hands then his, really. (Ugh, and my aunt too doesn't have much restrain, although her husband runs a little business at least.)

So I am now officially double majoring. Sociology and Psychology. Believe it or not, I'm not doing this out of self loathing but it will actually be relatively simple for me. Simple in the sense that it barely requires any more extra years out of me. The classes are not guaranteed to be simple.

Through the eyes I have known you.

I double majored too. As long as you have a plan (which means planning your courses sometimes a year in advance - you can generally ask the chair of the department or your department/major advisor about the schedule a year in advance) and you stick to it, it's not too bad. It's when you don't have a plan that you have to worry even to get a single major.

Political science. Western history.

Good point, although my International Relations textbook devotes a third of a chapter to Gender Theories (including two whole paragraphs about phallic symbolism in military technology), 5 times the space devoted to Marxist theories and more than any of the other non-Realist schools of thought.

My current college related complaint is about electronically scored "fill-in-the-blank" quiz questions which do not accept anything except one specific word, even when there are several correct ways to answer the question.

^Ugh, those are the worst. Sometimes you need to use the right capitalization too and it's just impossible.

Also:Ballroom dancing is a thing I am begging to think may be worth $25. The fact it's a thing to ask girls to is an advantage as well.

So my late financial-aid check has fucked up my plans to order my English books and get them on time to start doing homework.

Now I'll have to use the fucking SCHOOL library until I finally get my check and I can order them.
