New image?: Batman Gambit

In another conversation pickin' an image for Manipulative Bastard, it was noted that the page image on Batman Gambit would be perfect.

Even better than it is on that page: it is a good picture, and the characters are recognizably superheroes, but nothing says Batman is manipulating people by being able to predict their thought patterns, just that he's being manipulative and controlling the strings. On the other hand, although Batman is an Anti-Hero, Manipulative Bastard is mostly a villain trope and about using your powers for evil.

Perhaps Batman Gambit is easier to convey, if we can find a picture appropriately expressing "I knew you'd do that".

Not trying to rush anything, just asking: any objections to using this image for Manipulative Bastard and leaving Batman Gambit without an image?

This [1] was also shown in the Manipulative Bastard image discussion. It has an element of 'but what if he...?" and also a clear way it could fail.

This could definitely use an image. The current image was great, but since it's being used on Manipulative Bastard, we can probably come up with something else.

It should still be a picture of Batman.

I think it would be way more clear if it's not. The trope is manipulating people by predicting how they will behave and planning accordingly, which is a kind of gambit frequently employed by Batman... not "a gambit employed by Batman"...

Reviving discussion: if there were a better scan of the Superdickery deathtrap page, I'd think the second panel would work quite well.

You mean third? Because second one doesn't convoy this one. But yeah, higher quality scan would be perfect.

From my current understanding the idea of the gambit is that it relies on people reacting to part A such that the real point of the plan, part B, succeeds?

If so, why not use this C&H example?

Hate to break it to you, but it's probably the other way around.

Perhaps the second and fourth frames.

I don't think that would leave enough context, though. Here's the whole story, starting with its first mention of the gambit, in case earlier parts would yield a better image.

In any case, I've replaced the bottom-left panel so as to give more focus on the gambit.

One problem, apart from the question of "How many panels do we need," is copyright. While the "fair use" doctrine isn't as simple as a lot of the "sea lawyers" you see on teh intarwebs would have you think, a panel or two from a four-panel strip are certainly less likely to be problematic than a strip in its entirety.

Of course, it turns out to be the other way around...

Here's a horizontal arrangement, though it's a little misleading in that they're from separate strips... would a vertical arrangement be better?

I like Calvin And Hobbes as much as the next guy, but I'm not sure to what extent that series is an example. A Batman Gambit relies on people doing what they normally do. Is that really going on here?

[up] Calvin trying to trick Susie, and her outsmarting him? Of course that's how they normally are!

^That's not the question. Did Calvin's gambit rely on knowledge of Susie's standard behavior?

Susie's initial response was to ignore the letter. After a while, she picked it up and returned it to him. He has to walk by again and shout, "If I were Susie, and I found the letter, I'd pick it up and decode it so I could ruin all our plans!"

Indeed. I'd say this is an attempt at some sort of trick that isn't a Batman Gambit that doesn't work anyway. In short, not very good for the page image.

Sort of. His plan backfired because he didn't pay attention to Susie's standard pattern of behaviour.
