The image of Link praying to Jesus on the cross is...really damn surreal.

Just think how the series would be different if they kept the 'Triforce is computer chips to travel to the future' concept!

Honestly, it's surprising that Link has never turned out to be secretly royal. I'm not complaining, it just seems odd that the series never went in that direction considering the source material.

Actually, one of the earliest Zelda manga (non-canon, obviously, but still) had a reveal that Link was the bastard child of an affair between the Queen of Hyrule and an elf (yes, an elf, not a Hylian) lover, thus making him Zelda's half-brother. Yes, this actually happened in an official adaptation, fully endorsed by Nintendo.

Oh, and did you think this would've prevented Link and Zelda from being Implied Love Interests like usual? Because it didn't.

Regarding the Christian elements, it's also worth noting that Japanese culture tends to treat Christianity and European history in about the same way that Western culture tends to treat East Asian cultures and religion — as something foreign and exotic enough to be cool and interesting but familiar enough that people recognize it by sight, and which is consequently something of a go-to grab-bag of interesting traits, cultural touchstones, words, artifacts and assorted paraphernalia to toss into a story to make things cooler... without always doing a whole lot of research about what any of it actually means in its native context or how it all fits together. Hence a "Bible" being something with magical powers, for instance. Religion Is Magic, foreign is interesting, bada-bing bada-boom.

I'd imagine that the early games used all of the Christian elements they did because the developers probably just thought that European history was cool even if they didn't necessarily know a great deal about it, and then they were scaled back when Nintendo realized the games now had a big international market and it was probably more diplomatic to use a constructed mythology instead of hoping that they didn't misrepresent their new audience's religion enough to cause offense.

To be honest, I find it less likely that they realized it'd help avoid stepping on toes to make up their own mythology than that they just decided they wanted to make up their own mythology.

[up][up] Which is why Castlevania is all about a vampire hunter using Crosses and Holy Water to kill demons and vampires despite the fact it seems to go against what Christianity is (theoretically) supposed to be. I mean the cross is a symbol of Jesus's sacrifice and prayers would keep the demons at bay, but it's only in the movies that you see Van Helsing using a cross to physically kill Dracula with.

Which reminds me of that little qibble about early version of Ocarina of Time featuring Muslim prayer songs as part of the Temple of Fire's soundtrack.[lol]

A Link to the Past also had that whole "Zelda is your..." line in the original SNES release that lended itself really well to making that game's incarnation of the characters siblings if you so wished.

That got changed in the GBA release IIRC. There's actually a lot more little changes beyond that even when you compare the original SFC and JP GBA releases.

Notably, that line in Japanese is "You are the princess's..." The SNES translation mixed it around for some reason. The original is still unclear and open to speculating, though it was probably just supposed to be something like "You are the princess's last hope."

Now I'm thinking about all the different relationships that Link and Zelda have had over the years. Time to categorize them!

Who are you? Whatever, just save me: Zelda 1, Adventure of Link
Yo, rando, here's the plan: ALTTP/Oracle games, OOT, Twilight Princess, ALBW
Known you for as long as I can remember: Minish Cap, Four Swords, FSA, Skyward Sword
Okay, you're actually pretty cool: Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks
Dammit, Link, stop following -- holy shit, you gotta see this frog!: Breath of the Wild

Huh. So I've been thinking about Demise's curse again.

We get how Ganon ties into it, but it's still unclear where some other villains (Vaati, Bellum, Malladus, etc. All those villains who aren't directly related to Ganon on the surface, but still end up antagonizing Link and Zelda.

I still hold to the theory that while Ganon/dorf is the most common incarnation of Demise's curse, in the event he's not available, it will find the next strongest dude and find a way to point them at Link and Zelda in order to carry out his agenda.

But I also took note that villains who often seem unconnected to Ganon often end up having something to do with him.

By the time of Four Swords Adventures, Vaati is used to revive him. Yuga is another version of him, who inverts the usual trope and hijacks Ganon instead, Onox and Veran are being used by Twinrova to revive him, Agahnim is either his disguise or possessed by him, and Zant is acting as his proxy in conquering Hyrule. That being said, Skull Kid / Majora and Lady Maud are just doing their own thing.

My ultimate theory is that, even if a villains is acting on their own and has nothing to do with Ganon, targeting Link and Zelda ultimately pulls them into the cycle to act in his place, with the result being that they will either end up being manipulated by him to continue attacking them, or be forced to help revive him, under the pretext of being able to use his power to better accomplish their goals in some way.

This way Demise gets what he wants one way or another: his hatred still goes after them.

I may be overthinking it though.

[up] Just a small correction but Ganon was alive during Four Swords Adventures, he just used Vaati as a pawn for his schemes. Like the Gerudo talk about how Ganondorf went rogue and stole their trident.

And in Yuga's case, people have stated Anouma saying he isn't Ganondorf's Lorule counterpart

Oh. I didn't know that about Yuga.

Still, even if he's the one in control and doing the hijacking, he's still kinda taking Pig-man's place in the cycle. so in a way, he's being used as well.

[up] Yeah, even Yuga's alternate self trope in his page was removed.

Personally I like to imagine that Yuga was genuinely loyal to Hilda and had no ambitions to destroy the world till he took Ganon's power and went mad. It sort of makes Ganon into his own Demise when it comes to Yuga.

[up] I recall there was some discussion over Yuga not being Ganon's counterpart on this very wiki, and even Yuga's alternate self trope was removed on his page.

Something about Anouma stating it, but honestly, there needs to be a citation.

EDIT: Aaah, so the troper posted this: " Alternate Self hasn't been confirmed, Aonuma said Yuga wasn't a Gerudo, and just took inspiration from Ganon."

I mean by that metric none of the characters are confirmed to be counterparts? Its just something that is visually implied by the character designs, rather then outright stated even for Ravio and Hilda.

I mean, green skin, hawkish nose, red hair, forehead jeweled, long limbed character designs. He is clearly supposed to invoke the idea of Ganondorf without actually being identical.

Vooks: Aussie developer Tantalus returns to Hyrule with Skyward Sword HD.

EDIT: From dataminer Oatmeal Dome:

[Skyward Sword HD]

SSHD has leaked to the Internet.

Game codename is Shoebill.

The game was recompiled to run natively on the Switch. However, like Galaxy in SM 3 DAS, the GPU is at least partially emulated. (Hagi, SM 3 DAS’s emulator, isn’t used. Appears to be something new.)

While I haven’t been able to take a look at Skyward Sword HD’s code in depth, it does appear that at least the TEV (Texture Environment Unit) is emulated via shaders.

Existing file formats like BRRES (Nintendo Ware for Wii model format) are also used.
