Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Satan sure likes causing shenanigans in Final Fantasy.

Terra should have green hair when she's got her Esper blood and blonde hair when magic disappears and she becomes a normal human.

Also, Zenos in Dissidia tomorrow. Looking forward to his crazy cutscenes.

[up][up]I also headcanon it like this! I still prefer green though.

I like how her NT model has greenish blonde hair and how different it looks in different lighting.

About the Espers, six of them are based on past final bosses, six are mythological figures who, apart from Shemhazai, share names with the Lucavi from FFT (and may in fact be the same individuals), and then there's Zodiark, a completely original character.

The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."

FFXIV kinda confused the whole "Lucavi=Esper" thing because Argath doesn't turn into Chaos, but Duma, the original name for the Taurus lucavi in FFT's code. Also, there's a raid where instead of using Shemhazai, they go for the original name of the Saggitarius Lucavi, Rofocale.

I do think they ARE supposed to be the same beings however.

I was worried for a bit that English Zenos would be subdued like his JPN actor but he hit it out of the park again!grin

Zodiark was in FFT as the one empowering Elidibus. It's why he's his Emissary in XIV.

Why did FFVII go with the cheesy blocky style anyway?

Because it was one of the first 3D JRPG's and Square was still figuring things out. Obviously by the time of VIII they had a lot more experience.

Considering they're less detailed than the previous sprite characters, it's really kind of a shame they didn't go for more of a 2d look, despite how occasional FMV sequences aside, most of the game would've worked fine as a 2d game.

Games like Ocarina of Time were also cartoony and blocky. It was just how it was with the earliest 3D games; it was a new way of doing the art that took some time to practice before they could get to smoother, more real feeling looks.

[up][up] Sony execs came close to disallowing 2D games on their system in the west. 3D was all the rage, and those little clunky blocks of polygons you see in games of that era where jaw-dropping at the time.

Even if a game was objectively beautiful, a lot of games mags wouldn't give 2D games the time of day and a lot of publishers wouldn't give them proper support.

That's the way things are with the videogame industry, particularly the AAA publishers. You always gotta showcase the latest tech in your game, otherwise it's garbage.

That's one of the major reasons Daikatana's development was so delayed. Every time something new came along, John Romero wanted it in the game. Which meant tossing out previous work and starting over again. Rinse and repeat. As for the result...well, it wasn't a good game to put it lightly.

We gamers are somewhat responsible for this too, given how much we love good looking graphics in our games. Be honest...how many of us would actually be willing to pay the full $60 plus DLC for a AAA game that doesn't have absolutely stunning graphics?

Not me. I thought Mario 64 looked awful when it came out. I never had a lot of that 'it looked great for its time' nostalgia past a certain point. If characters didn't have much expression or detail, it looks bad to me regardless of the tech. Wasn't really until the Dreamcast that 3d could start getting uniquely detailed graphics.

The real problem with Mario 64 was the camera.

The first ever Final Fantasy VII concert is going to be in Los Angeles at the Dolby Theater on June 6th.

Speculation abounds as to whether VIIR is closer than we think.

Oh definitely, but 7 was came out before before it so there's was more time for Metal Gear's developers to work on things like graphics, plus different teams have different levels of experience, different budgets, also funnily enough I noticed how 7 and Metal both have you spy on someone in the airvents something I thought was a shoutout though its far more likely to be a common trope so its a coincidence
