What stories/series are you currently into?

Personally, I'm taking a break from Scott Pilgrim as I'm going through Essential X-Men Volume One. I'm not that far into it at the moment, but it's pretty fun so far. Interesting to see how these iconic characters were when they first appeared, and watching them develop into the—holy cow, Storm's got Godiva Hair. I'm sorry, where was I?

I'm working my way through Judge Dredd: the Complete Case Files; I'm currently on volume 4, just after the Judge Child Quest, and it looks like the Apocalypse War I've heard so much about is brewing.

These volumes just keep getting better. Vol 1 was, well, crap, due in part to shenanigans going on behind the scenes. Vol 4, however, is shaping up nicely, with great art, halfway decent dialogue, and stronger continuity.

Glad to hear Judge Dredd improves I got half way through volume 1 and left it at home when I moved to Boston due to space and it being meh.

I'm trying to get through several series right now, I collect trade paperbacks so here's what I'm working on:

  • JMS Spider-Man
  • Y the Last Man
  • Sandman
  • Punisher Max
  • Runaways
  • empowered
  • Scott Pilgrim
  • Deadpool Classic (volume 4 just announced, I released a mannish squee)
  • Cable and Deadpool
  • Frank Miller's Daredevil
  • Power Girl

It's gonna be a long time till I clear my list, also fairly expensive.

@Vampire Buddha - I'm on Volume One, and I'm taking a break (stalled in the middle of the Mooney arc). My brother's nagging for me to get another volume of Transmetropolitan, but I'm kinda poor.

I liked it. It was cheesy enough to throw me back to an age I wasn't even born in.

I picked up the Immortal Iron Fist trades in Thing From Another World's recent sale, so I'm rereading that. Once my second order comes in, I'll start Ultimate Spider-Man finally.

Finished up X-Men, so I'm starting on volume two of Essential Spider-Man.

The galaxy-spanning X-Men stories were outstanding, but it feels great to get back down to Spidey on Earth (EDIT: figures that right after I type that, I read the Dr. Strange crossover). I'm only a few issues in, but I've been grinning the whole time. As usual, Stan's lighthearted dialogue and scripts are great at balancing out Steve's moody, film noir-like artwork and plotting. These guys were an amazing team. Kinda sad that Dikto's departure is coming up...

Right now, the only ongoings I'm reading are Green Lantern and Return of Bruce Wayne. Thinking about getting back into Spidey, but I've been burned a few too many times in recent years. I've heard great things about the current Power Girl series, so I might give it a shot. Have they released any trades for it yet?

Judge Dredd Case Files gets better? I got Volume 1 to see what the old-school fuss was all about, and I could barely get through two issues. I guess I'll pick it back up and soldier on so I can read the later volumes. Unless there's no need to read the first volume.

I started Rising Stars but haven't gotten very far. It seems pretty good and I like the idea of a long-running but self-contained narrative superhero story. Not a huge fan of the art though. I haven't flipped through so I don't know if gets better.

I'm reading Kick-Ass, and so far it's not bad. I don't think it's tits on glass like a lot of people in the scene do, but I also don't think it's some sort of gluttonous excess like other people do. I'm pretty sure it won't be as good as Wanted, but that would be hard to do.

I just finished Chew Volume 1. It's pretty good, in part because it's off-beat to the point of being insane. Detectives who eat human flesh to solve crimes? Pretty sure that's never been done before. I'm very interested to see where the story goes. I'm not thrilled with the art, but maybe it will grow on me. I prefer a somewhat more realistic style though.

I was reading Steampunk: Manimatron by Kelly and Bachalo, and as much as I like the aesthetic, setting and Bachalo's art, it somehow feels like a chore to read through. Again, I like Bachalo's art, but does anyone else sometimes feel like he almost clutters the page? I have to stare at some of his scenes to really know exactly what's going on. I felt the same way when I read "Captain Stoneheart and the Truth Fairy," the screeching Mood Shift fairy tale at the end of Elephantmen: Wounded Animals. Humberto Ramos does the same thing, but I digress. I'm almost done with Steampunk, we'll see how I feel at the end.

Usually I chew through trade paperbacks at a rate of one per day or two, but I just changed jobs from infantry company Executive Officer (XO) to an assistant operations officer at the battalion staff, and my schedule is more regimented. Mostly I just read The Witcher on my Sony Reader when I go to the shitter.

Volume 1 sucks. It's really one for existing fans who want to see how it got started. There are a few things that get referenced later, notably Rico, but those later references are written so that a new reader can understand them.

If you don't hate starting partway through, I'd recommend starting at volume 5. Among other things, this includes:

  • "The Mega-Rackets:" A group of 1-3 issue stories examining the various crimes that happen in Mega-City One. No major plots here, but characters from the early parts of the arc do turn up later.
  • "Judge Death Lives!:" The Dark Judges wreak havoc on Mega-City One. Includes the iconic "GAZE INTO THE FIST OF DREDD!" panel.
  • "Block Mania:" The Sovs poison the water supply, making everybody in Mega-City One fight each other. Ties in to a story from volume 4, but that one isn't necessary to follow this one. That said, volume 4 is also a decent starting point.
  • "Apocalypse War:" With Mega-City One in chaos due to te events of "Block Mania," the Sovs launch a massive assault. We see things like Dredd personally euthanising a band of survivors infected by radiation because the Judges can't spare medicine or rations, executing a few hundred collaborators and leaving them in a mass grave maked Traitors, and an absolutely astonishing number of nukes thrown around. This story left me exhausted and shaking when I finished; Garth Ennis cited this as one of the defining moments of his life.

Finished Kick-Ass. I didn't like it. At all. It's too much, and I love over-the-top violence. There's a distinct difference between the way Kick-Ass treats it and say, Bodycount by Eastman and Bisley, or Punisher MAX by Ennis. I just don't like the whole attitude and message of the book I guess. I wish I didn't waste the money on the hardcover, but I had to see what the fuss was about.

Read Savage Dragon Volume 1: Baptism by Fire. Pretty damn good, for a '90's Image comic. I like that Larsen affectionately mocks Liefeld's terrible Youngblood. Yes, the random one-night-stand dies in the end for no apparent reason (Women In Refrigerators, got it), but otherwise I loved it. I'm going to buy the rest of them.

I'm reading Mark Schultz' Xenozoic Tales, which is fantastic. Art and story both.

Read Rex Mundi: Guardian of the Temple. Also great. I'll have to start buying the rest of the series.

Okko Volume 1 Cycle of Water is fantastic and beautiful, which is to be expected from Archaia.

i'm reading brightest day (although just the generation Lost tie-in because...well it's got my favorite league of all time, now if giffen and De Matteis could come back...) and re-re-reading transmetropolitan (I can't get tired of it, it's weird that i always with it's jokes and quote it from time to time)

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

I just finished the Trinity trade paperbacks. You know, I kind of liked the JSI timeline. I really like Lois Lane being the host of an abrasive news commentary entitled "Fastlane".

I just got Walking Dead Compendium One and Deadpool and Cable Ultimate Collection Volume 3.

I just finished Empowered.

I'm working my way through Ennis' Max series.

I've read 2 volumes of Runaways and will read more.

I'm halfway through Sandman but I intentionally take my time with that series.

Same with Y the Last man.

I've been meaning to get the last JMS Spider-Man (I'm something of a completionist)

I read volume 1 of Queen and Country but think I'll take my time on that it was okay but not great.

Begun Spider-Man 2099. Really good so far, I like how different Miguel O'Hara is from Peter Parker. It shows that Marvel was trying to create a unique character, not just another version of Parker (well, aside from the fact that they're both scientists and DeadpanSnarkers).

I just hope that they dial back the Darker and Edgier a bit.

Best line so far: "Mike, do you know what my father would say if he were still alive?" "Help, help, get me out of this coffin?" Although Spider-Man trying to come up with a Pre-Asskicking One-Liner and coming up with "Hi." was pretty funny, too.

Just finished reading [[Magazine/Mad MAD About the Sixties]]. A bunch of the jokes went over my head due to not having experienced the decade myself, and a few suffered from being repeatedly copied over the years, but overall, it was pretty funny.

The best spoofs were probably the ones for Batman and the Mod Squad. And you can't go wrong with Spy Vs Spy, Don Martin, Mort Drucker, and Sergio Aragones.

Trying to find anything and everything I can for The Darkness and Tank Girl.

Read the first volume of Sandman and thought it was 'meh', contemplating over whether I should continue collecting.

Collected the first 3 volumes of Alan Moore's Saga of Swamp Thing.

And began reading Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, which is currently my favorite comic.

I just finished the third volume of Locke and Key after finding out that it was written by Stephen King's son. It's really good, he's got the same imagination as King and a really good grasp on how teenagers function.

Working on Steve Ditko's Doctor Strange run. It's good, but the short length of the stories hurts it a bit. Makes me wish they'd been able to develop things out more.

Also reading Howard The Duck. A little preachy at times, but very good overall.

And on the DC side of things, I'm rereading The Dark Knight Returns. Still my favorite Batman story.

I decided to do a Vertigo binge: Preacher, Transmetropolitan, Y: the Last Man and the Sandman (although he wasn't always there) so far preacher is as Badass and funny as I remember it
