The "talk exposition first, act it out later" style of Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett in Abigail drove me insane. It's a blessing that they don't have to establish their protagonists in this movie. Which might make it the best Mummy in this particular franchise yet; I genuinely feel like an out-of-touch old fart when I talk about the 1999 movie.

Is this separate from the upcoming Lee Cronin film?

Lee Cronin film is Warner. The Fraser movies is one of many by Universal. Maybe I keep my hopes up for this movie, specially with the possibility of ignoring the third one!

It's all very confusing.

So far we've had the original film; a semi-remake of that original film; three sequels to that semi-remake; a Abott and Costello parody of that semi-remake; a Hammer Horror film that combines elements from the original film, the semi-remake and the semi-remake's sequels; three unrelated sequels to that Hammer film; the Stephen Sommers remake of the original film; that film's two sequels; the first sequel's Scorpian King spinoff films; an animated show based on the Sommers films; a 2017 reboot that takes elements from the Sommers movie and was intended to kickstart a cinmatic unvierse but failed (though that cinematic universe did result in multiple Divorced Instalments); a Lee Cronin remake; a fourth film in the Sommers series; and a possible reboot of the Scorpian King franchise; plus countless video games, comic books and rides.

Hmm... I'm not sure of how I feel about a new Brendan Fraser Mummy movie...

On the one hand, I love the original (well, "original", as per [up]) Brendan Fraser Mummy. More like that could be great!

On the other, the sequels to that movie fell of pretty sharply, I feel. On top of which, it's been some time now—the iron isn't just not hot, it'll give you cold-burns!

Well, we'll see: I'm willing to give it a chance, and I'm interested to see a trailer, at least!

If nothing else, surely it has to be better than The Mummy (2017). (Which I enjoy watchthroughs of, to be clear... but more from an angle of... So Bad, It's Good.

I like both the Mummy Returns and Tomb of The Dragon Emperor honestly.

[up] I would say that I like The Mummy Returns—but nowhere near as much as I like The Mummy, which is a genuine favourite of mine. Dragon Emperor I enjoyed watching, I seem to recall—it was okay. But I wouldn't be inclined to return to it.

But, each to their own! These things are subjective, after all!

Mummy Returns is fine. It's not the first but it's watcheable. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is... less interesting. It's by no means unwatcheable but it's a marked decrease in quality. I think a part that holds it back is that besides Evelyn being re-cast, Rick and Evelyn feel like they are sort of just there? Like, it's not their story. It's Alex' story, it's Zi Yuan's story, it's her daughter's story. Rick and Evelyn are there coz like... its their franchise. Evelyn in particular is terribly used.

I am admittedly concerned how Brendan Fraser can handle an action movie. Like he's been very open about the physical toll and injuries doing action movies have exacted on his body. And like, I don't want the guy to wreck himself making a movie, but I'm also not super into a movie where all the acting is CGI coz the actor can't do it.

Of course broader question is what's our mummy? Are we bringing back Arnold Vosloo. He was great as the mummy but it's also been like 20 years and they show alot on a guy who plays and unaging undead.

For Vosloo, they could keep him as, well, a mummy, using CGI or makeup. You could barely tell Michael Keaton was over 3 decades older as Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Still, it would be tricky.

As for Fraser, maybe play up that he's a bit of a Non-Action Guy now? Of course, given his son would probably fill his niche, it might invite comparisons to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

I don't think the "Non action guy let his son do things" aspect works when the entire reason you're making this film is for nostalgia points on the first 2 ones.

It doesn't look like that's a lesson Hollywood is willing to learn since they keep turning out sequels with people who are clearly too old to keep on being action stars.

Please remember that, ultimately, fictional works of entertainment are just that.

While I think it's an oft overused question all I can think is 'Who asked for this?' Have execs been taken in by memes to think there's a big audience for this? Does even the most dedicated Brenaissance fan want another Mummy sequel? I can imagine them wanting another sequel if the cast were 1999 hot but now? Maybe that's shallow.

So yeah, it depends if someone came to them with a great idea for Mummy 4, or execs decided they wanted a 4th to try and revive the franchise for money I guess.

I feel like it's more of a hope at nostalgia profits and an attempt to bring the brand back on track after the Tom Cruise movie.

I will say, I would like a "Mummy" movie. Not necessarily a continuation of any specific franchise—but more "ancient Egyptian undead with vast powers" fun? Yes, please.

I'm just hesitant about an attempt to reanimate the Brendan Fraser series...

Like he's been very open about the physical toll and injuries doing action movies have exacted on his body.

Oof, I don't think that I'd heard about this (or had forgotten). That is, indeed, another reason to be hesitant about this... :/

Of course broader question is what's our mummy?

For myself, I think that I'd probably want a new mummy.

Arnold Vosloo's Imhotep was really really good—but we've seen him, and I'd like to see a new threat, with new motivations.

(Maybe even multiple (non-bit-part) mummies?)

... an attempt to bring the brand back on track after the Tom Cruise movie.

You see, this I'm on board with.

I like Mummy movies. I even liked the actual mummy in the Tom Cruise movie. (It's just a pity about the rest of the movie... ^^; )

So an attempt to bring that back is something that I'd like to see!

Yes, Ahmanet was a cool villain. And even if I didn't hate her movie, The Mummy Demastered turned out to be a better way to experience it.

One thing they could take from the third is the Sequel Hook where a text says just because Jonathan fled to America a mummy was found there. Surely the nostalgia will make the movie Egyptian again, but I'm not against an Incan (or Aztec) mummy!

Apparently this film might apply Canon Discontinuity on the third film, so technically this would be Mummy 3 (2).

[up] You know how after Terminator 2, they made Terminator 3, Salvation, and Genisys, but when they made Dark Fate, they said "hey, those last three movies are non-canon because Dark Fate is the real Terminator 3"?

This is that. They're making a sequel to The Mummy Returns that totally ignores Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

[up][up]Quoting the article you linked:

"It is unclear who else could return. One source describes the project as not a reboot, but rather a sequel that would disregard the events of the third movie. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay."

Isn't there a Robocop revival that apparently follows on the first movie but ignores the reboot and the two sequels in the works? Or did I dream up that one?
