I hope they make the four day work week a permanent thing in the future. It would help reduce the stress that comes from work.

Is that 4 days while keeping the work hours at 8 hours per day? A BPO company here tried that but made the work hours 11 and only 2 of those rest days are connected, the 3rd was split from the other 2.

I recall some old news about India also thinking of bringing a 4 days work week but with 12 hour shifts instead to maintain the 48 hours per week timing. I would honestly prefer 8-10 hour shifts for 5-6 days than that possibility.

[up][up] Yeah, I'm not sure if I want to have a work week like that. If someone prefers a 4 days work week, then good. But not everyone moves to the same pace.

Portugal Announces New 38,000 Sq. Mile Protected Area Around 'Stunning' Underwater Mountains

Established around the Gorringe seamount, technically Portugal’s tallest mountain, the decision will take the nation’s total protected territorial waters to 27%, making the small Iberian country the continent's leader in protected ocean waters.

In their words: "It will provide a fertile nursery and feeding ground for turtles, sharks, marine mammals, sea birds and tunas, expand or restore kelp and coral forests and create a sanctuary for the unique breeding aggregation of torpedo rays."

Great to see more protected areas coming into fruition.

The world’s first malaria treatment for babies has now been approved for use

That's right, the company in question just developed this treatment made for newborns, and will be rolled out to regions with the highest rates of malaria within weeks.

Gotta bring more medicines being produced that work on certain age ranges.

‘Agents of green transition’: Gujarat’s salt farmers signal a cleaner, fairer future for informal workers

"In the salt flats of Gujarat, India, an unlikely green revolution is underway. With support from trade union SEWA, thousands of informal salt farmers are swapping diesel pumps for solar power – cutting emissions, raising incomes and proving that the path to net zero can bring both environmental and economic transformation."

Basically, the group in question were steadily replacing their diesel-powered pumps with solar-powered equivalents.

Good to see more farmers who adapt.

Vietnam has made great strides in providing immunization for children.

In 2024, Việt Nam achieved 99 per cent coverage for the first dose of the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine, up from 80 per cent in 2023. Immunisation coverage in Việt Nam has not only rebounded to the high levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic but has now surpassed the rates recorded in 2019.

This improvement led to a reduction in the number of zero-dose children – that is, children who had not been protected by any vaccine – from 274,000 in 2023 to just 13,000 in 2024, a decline of over 95 per cent. Compared to the previous year, many more young Vietnamese children are protected against common vaccine preventable diseases.

In 2024, Việt Nam had well above global averages for immunisation coverage, thanks to strong Government leadership, great efforts by health-care workers and support from parents and the community.

Twelve of England’s regional mayors back plan to create ‘national active travel network’

Basically, the first batch will be on trips to and from school, with a pledge to create a combined 3,500 miles of routes safely linking schools to homes, town and city centres, and transport hubs.

Whitty said: “Increasing physical activity has health benefits across the life course. As part of this, we need to make walking and cycling more accessible, and safer, as well as access to green space easier and more equitable."

So both healthy for the people and the environment, which is a good call.

Joy at the Ethiopia-Eritrea frontier as the Zalambessa crossing is reopened for the first time in five years

After the 2020 Tigray war sealed the border, even without the official backing of authorities, the families and local activists got the blessing of both the Tigray and Eritrea to make this happen, as temporary as it may be.

Don't underestimate how powerful a community can be, with or without a government.

Greening the Great South of Madagascar: How Communities are Fighting Drought and Restoring Hope

"In Madagascar’s Great South, communities are fighting drought and restoring degraded lands through the World Bank-supported MIONJO project. Over 1,500 hectares of dunes have been stabilized, 330 hectares reforested, and 24 nurseries created. Local leaders like Ralahy Fidèle and Nasta are driving this transformation - restoring hope, protecting livelihoods, and building long-term climate resilience for over 1.4 million people."

Good to see the people of that island working things out quite well.

People diagnosed with dementia are living longer than ever

"A new study analyzed data on more than 1.2 million people living with dementia globally. It found that in five of the eight regions studied, representing 84% of test subjects, people diagnosed with dementia have a lower risk of premature death."

All of this thanks to advancements in early detection and improvements in treatment and customized care.

Man, medicine is really a miracle worker these days.
