speaking as a minority on the left, while i agree that farmer unions are wrecking the world (hello California corruption and being the primary cause of salt water leaching into freshwater reserves) labelling everyone part of a group as harmful is not always the right answer when there are sustainable farms that dont pretend to be ~organic~
Right. This is the "Good News Thread", so on that note:
Researchers hope that this'll help them understand the impact of deforestation and the importance of the rainforests.

While they pointed out the caveats, I still think that it was devolving a bit of an anti-farmer thread for a few posts even though the purpose of the article was to show the actions of farmers who do adapt.
Sorry, guys, but can we please move on? I think we've made the point that this thread is not for generalizing groups of people and venting how much you dislike them, but for presenting good news even if caveats and corrections are always welcome.
Anyway:
The Pennines hills in England are set to become a new nature reserve.
The reserve, called the Bradford Pennine Gateway, will be protected as one of England's biggest reserves, and it'll serve to protect both the greenery and the rare wildlife that can be encountered there.
My AO3 profile. Let sleeping cats lie and be cute and calming.I found a good article about regenerative agriculture: https://civileats.com/2025/05/12/could-this-arizona-ranch-be-a-model-for-southwest-farmers/
(A pro-farmer article, in my forum thread about farming? The answer may shock you)
A farm in Arizona has spent the last 6 years working in regenerative agriculture (agriculture that improves the soil rather than depletes it) using crops adapted to the local environment, careful use of cover crops, and some traditional Amerindian farming practices, and has managed to improve soil health, tripling the amount of organic matter in the soil and significantly improving its ability to hold nutrients and absorb and retain water, and also bringing many species of native fauna back into the area.
It does mention though that the owner of the farm is a former lawyer who had a fair amount of personal wealth when he bought he land from his aunt and uncle, and had to pour a lot of that wealth into putting those practices in motion, which is really not an option for a lot of farmers, who tend to have razor-thin profit margins, and a lot more outside investments and government subsidies will be needed before more farmers can afford to make these kinds of changes on their own farms, which is why I think its kind of unfair to judge farmers too harshly for resisting change. There is a bit of a silver lining there though, which is that as the farm was doing a lot of experimental stuff, other farms can skip the parts of the experiment that didn't work and just implement the programs that did.
Clown To Clown Handshake Initiating...Fresh hope for patients with breast cancer gene
"In a study run by England’s University of Cambridge, patients with early-stage inherited breast cancer were treated with chemotherapy followed by the targeted drug olaparib before surgery. Of the 39 women who were treated this way, all survived the critical three-year period post-surgery."
So, based on these results, it could be one of the most effective treatments to use on people with breast cancer.
Hopefully, soon enough.

UK project trials carbon capture at sea to help tackle climate change
Amidst the groing studies regarding carbon capture, the UK based Sea CURE it aims to find out if sea carbon capture actually works, and if it can be competitive with its air counterpart. Currently, it's designed to process 3,000 liters of seawater per minute and remove an estimated 100 tons of CO 2 per year.
Hope the results can be promising enough.
"Cynicism is not realistic and tough. It's unrealistic and kind of cowardly because it means you don't have to try."Interesting. It's not just dissolved CO 2, but dissolved carbon in other forms, and decarbonizing the water also makes it absorb more CO 2 when pumped back out. 100 tons is an insanely small amount though for the amount of energy and maintenance it's going to take to move that much salt water. Hopefully they're lowballing the estimates or have some much more efficient designs in the works.

Apparently, B Yamagata has reported zero cases in the latest years, most likely due to measures taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A grassroots initiative named Treecovery Hawai‘i, formed since 2023, with a force of volunteers, local farmers, nurseries and hotels have stepped up to host thousands of young trees growing in pots that will be replanted in Lahaina. They not only focus on reforestation, but also a sense of community to help rebuild the fauna that was devastated from the fires.
Hope can blossom on, no matter what.

Under the new plans, Housebuilders will be legally required to install solar panels on the roofs of new properties by 2027, adding between £3,000 and £4,000 to building a home but homeowners would save more than £1,000 on their annual energy bills.
Sounds like a good economic and ecological approach, the best of both worlds if I may add.

Make Good NOLA, a New Orleans-based adaptive design lab, has made a 3D printed wheelchair for disabled kids, one that's modular and easy to make. Even better is that once the prototype is completely finished, it will be available as a fair-use download that anyone can use for free.
Honestly, I think some services like education and social mobility should have more free options for people with disabilities to ease the burden on them.
"Cynicism is not realistic and tough. It's unrealistic and kind of cowardly because it means you don't have to try."
I happen to agree, the disabled need all the tools and resources available to them at no additional cost. If no additional cost, keep it low enough to be affordable to them. Ask me how I know, I'm among the disabled (Traumatic Brain Injury to be precise.). Pity that some people in office think otherwise and that's all I will say, lest I get thumped.
Trees Can Warn Us When Volcanos Are Ready to Erupt–and NASA Satellites Can Read Their Signals
Trees are now being used to detect when a volcano will erupt, as the carbon dioxide gases released from the magma are absorbed by the trees and the trees will become green and vibrant. These are changes that could be tracked by satellite and they can be used to help warn people when a volcano is about to erupt.
This is really good news because for years, I've been very concerned about how many trees are being cut down each year and the fact that trees can be used to detect volcano eruptions will probably help convince more people to save the trees.
