Man withstands 800+ snake bites — on purpose — to find a universal anti-venom

Tim Friede, a Youtuber from Wisconsin, spent 20 years to find an universal anti-venom serum, using his own antibodies in his blood as a testing ground from 200 bites of the most venemous snakes. The result? A mix of toxins present in his blood and the venoms would lead to a single pan anti-venom cocktail.

Gotta love the existence of rare superhumans among our species, especially when they do good.

That's impressive that the Youtuber is able to hold in so much venom in his body. But, glad he found a cure for venom!

Electricity Captured from Falling Rain Conjures the Ultimate Picture of Tropical Sustainability

"Scientists in Singapore have broken a long-standing limitation on the ability to generate electricity from flowing water, suggesting that another elemental force of nature could be leveraged for renewable electricity: rain."

"Because the droplet speeds tested were much slower than rain, the researchers suggest that the real thing would provide even more than their tests, which were of course on a microscale."

Sounds like a brilliant idea, especially if it correlates with the idea of using the humidity of clouds to create artificial rain on desert cities.

Turkish garbage collectors built a public library out of discarded books

A bunch of Turkish garbage collectors rescued pairs of books and now built a public library in Çankaya to store them.

Talk about finding diamonds in a rough.

As you can see from this graph, beach littering from the Baltics to the Aegean Sea is dropping by 30%, and if the trend continues, litter may be reduced to a 50% by 2030.

These are the programmes we need in our lifetimes.

Women's hockey league shatter records, growing the game for young girls

In the Professional Women's Hockey League's second season in Minnesota, the league is shattering records for women's sports and recently held its first-ever "Breakthrough Cup" tournament with more than 600 girls competing, increasing attendance up to a 35%.

It's good to see women's sport getting attention like this despite everything.

Okra and Fenugreek Extracts Safely Remove Microplastics From Water in New Texas Research

Basically, researchers found out that okra and/or fenugreek extracts attracted and removed up to 90% of microplastics from ocean water, freshwater, and groundwater. Basically ensuring the removal of microplastics without adding unnecessary toxic substances.

Sounds like a fascinating method, actually.

New literary venture to platform working-class writers

The Bee, a twice-yearly magazine, podcast and online writing community, aims to help people in the working class in the UK and aim to improve those figures by giving those members courses in literature.

Time to send if we can see hidden gems coming from those writers.

Elk could return to Britain after 3,000 years

"Ecologists have hatched a plan to reintroduce the semiaquatic deer to sites in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The proposed sites are already home to reintroduced beavers, another “keystone” species that is making a comeback in Britain after a long absence."

First beavers now elks, sounds like many animals are making comebacks this year.

Astronomers have found signs of biological activity on a planet 124 light years from Earth

"in what they call the strongest evidence yet of extraterrestrial life. Scientists detected specific organic molecules in the atmosphere of K2-18b, a distant water-covered planet that is 8.6 times bigger than Earth and orbits a red dwarf star. On Earth such molecules are only produced by living organisms."

More lifeforms found!

Maybe. The presence of molecules that on Earth only life produces does not necessarily mean life is on this planet, since we haven't yet ruled out non-life reasons for its presence. Still, an intriguing find that merits further investigation.

It is too bad that it's basically impossible to confirm unless the life discovered has had at least a human-level impact on their planet, due to limits in telescope power.

Farmers are making bank harvesting a new crop: Solar energy

This brand new practice used by farmers in California’s Central Valley for the last 25 years, also using those panels to grow herbs like leafy greens and berries, under the panels.

Gotta love the farmers who do adapt.

Not to be a party spoiler, but despite the practice having found approval in academic environments and some farmers, most are hostile to it and several countries have pushed legislation to ban it by excluding renewable energy sources from fields dedicated to agriculture: this includes Italy, in which the leading farmers' unions have railed agaings the practice... for some reason...

[up] I've honestly grown to dislike farmers for these kinds of reasons. They're one of the most environmentally destructive and entitled groups of people out there. Many are also deeply conservative and are the kind to reject stuff like this for purely ideological reasons.

[up] Farmers are a diverse bunch. There are those who do not care about the environment and only think of their own monetary gains, those who care about the environment and try to strike a balance between their activities and their land, those who are forced to do it to carve out a bare minimum form of survival... there are several factors, so making the entire socio-economical class to be one carbon copy is not quite right. After all, it was farmers themselves who came up with the solar farming we are talking about.

[up] I'm of the mindset that even if some members of a group do good, if the group as a whole is doing more harm, then it should be condemned. That's what's going on with the farmers.
