Potential ambiguity of CuteKitten?

The trope Cute Kitten seems to mean a "cute kitten" literally, but the trope can be YMMV adjacent bc the trope don't judge whether examples are audience reactions or in-universe ones.

Since the trope is being an umbrella term, I think it should be a YMMV trope, or the scope of the trope has to limited to in-universe examples.

Think some tropes both related to finding an awkward character's awkwardness cute:

  • Endearingly Dorky: In-universe trope. A character belongs to the work likes a nerdy character cuz they find the nerd's awkwardness cute.
  • Adorkable: YMMV trope. The audience likes a nerdy character cuz they find the nerd's awkwardness cute. Although he tends to be unloved in his universe.

In the body of the page, the trope does not provide its scope. So, we can't know whether it's for in-universe examples or audience reactions. Perhaps lack of it's Playingwith subpage makes the trope confusing.

Some examples of the page exist just because "a cat appears in random works." Maybe the page needs to be fixed with some valid scopes for the trope to avoid ZCEs and YMMV-fying.

Also, is there the YMMV version of the trope? Like Adorkable being a YMMV trope.

Potential problems of the trope:

  • Too vague: As aforementioned, the trope has an Expo Label because the trope is for "cute cats in works." However, lack of scope makes it YMMV-like though it is a main trope.
  • The page's definition does not have clear scope beyond cute kittens or cats in media. I think it's examples have to be limited to in-universe's to be a main trope
  • The page has some potential ZCE contents. It's not enough for a cat to appear in works, and how a character in a work's universe treat the cat may be important for the trope.
    • Cat Nine and "Random kitties" example in the trope page are ZCEs. The examples seem to be not linked to the trope's possible examples in the description. The TAWOG example and Battle Kitty example in the trope page also do. The examples are vaguely written bc they're unknown whether audience reactions or in-universe reactions.

Note that this used to be called Everything's Cuter with Kittens. I think the discussion that got it changed started here.

[up] thx. I think we also have to make a scope for the trope.

As written, this is one of those tropes that are basically "thing exists". ("Kittens are cute" is hardly a trope, because how many non-cute kittens can you think of in media?) At least the old "everything is better with X" format implied that it was a gratuitous thing: add a kitten for instant cuteness, no matter what the context.

[up] Perhaps we should rule out simple "animal beings exist in a work." I think the key is to be associated with animals and cuteness in the works.

[up][up] Thank you for letting me know, but the trope page is read confusing to me, if I just read the description of the page, especially the laconic.
